do we know what happened in China when people couldn't work? Did they get money or food parcels? It's a logistical nightmare.

There was an effort to ship in and distribute food but there have also been rumours of food shortages. It was something foreign students were complaining about in particular. But China has managed to silence almost everything coming out of Wuhan so its impossible to know.

There was also a lot of talk of labour shortages in rural Hubei province in agriculture which was affecting harvesting. I did see talk of urghurs being moved as forced labour to fill thus gap.

We DO know that huge amounts of imported food has not been shipped to China though because all the cold shortage at docks was full as no one was offloading it and distributing it.

So from that alone you have to assume that there is food shortages going on.

That's likely to start trickling through to the rest of the world as China exports fail to arrive in the next couple of weeks too.

In all seriousness, how would school closures practically work in the UK?

There are many single parents, very often little to no practical family support re:childcare. They would lose their income and possibly also have no job to return to when it's all over.

Rent, mortgage, food, utilities? How would this be paid? Universal credit universal cope with any influx of applications and the delay in payment would cripple many.

I think it would quite literally tip a very significant number of women and children into poverty and potentially also homelessness.

@FourTeaFallOut. I’m working on the basis that if alcohol works on the outside of your hands it MUST also work from the inside out!! 🥂🍸🍹🍻🍺🥃. I’m COVERING all bases in case one is better than the others 😊

PLEASE NOTE Absolutely light hearted JOKE. I don’t actually believe it will help & it might even make it more difficult for your body to fight any virus off, but I’m not abstaining either.

Just had some Hypa Clean Hand Gel arrive. I swear you could get drunk in that, it made me catch my breath just squirting it onto my hands!

Example. China is one of the biggest exporters of sugar substitutes.

And look at this

<a class="break-all" href="https://thehill.com/homenews/news/485035-coca-cola-says-coronavirus-could-affect-diet-coke-supply?amp#click=t.co/hqI9Hrrnys" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">thehill.com/homenews/news/485035-coca-cola-says-coronavirus-could-affect-diet-coke-supply?amp#click=t.co/hqI9Hrrnys
Coca-Cola says coronavirus could affect Diet Coke supply

Coca-Cola reported that the outbreak of coronavirus in China could affect its supply chain demands, leading to a shorter supply of goods that go into making the company's diet beverages.

Exports of goods from China, such as artificial sweeteners used in the company's zero-sugar drinks, have been delayed as a result of industrial stalls related to the spread of the virus, according to CNN on Tuesday.

"We have initiated contingency supply plans and do not foresee a short-term impact due to these delays," Coca-Cola wrote in an annual report. "However, we may see tighter supplies of some of these ingredients in the longer term should production or export operations in China deteriorate."

In its report, the company listed sweeteners used in its beverages, including aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, saccharin, cyclamate, and steviol glycosides. Coca-Cola indicated that it considered sucralose, commonly known as Splenda, a "critical raw material" obtained from suppliers in China and the U.S., the report said.

Artificial sweeteners are in all sort of processed foods so we might see production problems if companies are unable to source alternatives like Coca cola seems to have managed.

This morning DH’s employer has banned all international travel and trips to large public events. International visitors are only permitted on site with the permission of the vice-president and after risk analysis. Anyone who has already booked holidays to a high-risk area is required to inform their manager, those who haven’t booked holidays are requested to avoid high-risk areas. It’s an ultra conservative old fashioned British company which would usually take a stiff upper lip attitude, so the fact they’re taking this seriously suggests it’s a big problem.

RedToothBrush · 28/02/2020 09:30

In all seriousness, how would school closures practically work in the UK?

Absolutely.

Women are much more likely to be affected. And I think that's why they are trying to keep schools open tbh because the side effects of closing a school are so significant.

It's more likely to be individual schools closed in badly affected areas for the least amount of time possible (possibly simply because there may be no staff available)

It's why there are people saying we are simply going to have to live with it.

It depends on how badly swamped hospitals are.

Food banks are likely to be in higher demand at a time when donations are likely to be particularly low.

Ironically if you are already on benefits, it might be the case that you are more secure financially than people with jobs who suddenly get laid off or have to take unpaid leave. That's going to lead to some pretty nasty resentment...

@IceWings
I wouldn't necessarily assume that that business thinks it's a big problem.
I would say that they are taking a responsible attitude to something that could become a big problem.
Large employers with staff travelling all over the world will be under the spotlight as places where the virus could spread rapidly.

FelicityMarbles · 28/02/2020 09:32

Does anyone have tickets for Crufts next week?
I’m supposed to be going on Thursday but am becoming concerned.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s cancelled.

Number12 · 28/02/2020 09:33

@Whatsmyname2019 can you tell me roughly what area you are please?

The two new uk cases have flown in via an airport via public transport and been around hundreds of people even if they went straight home after landing. This REALLY worries me and yet in RL no one cares!! Our schools have only upon some pressure sent a text saying they are following government protocol, that's it. Nothing about anyone having traveled back for affected countries. Nothing proactive just feels very head in the sand to me.

AmelieTaylor · 28/02/2020 09:34

@icewings.

If only more companies (and the bloody GOVT) were taking this approach we’d ALL be far better off. Good on them.

I think it’s probably because of the type of company they are that they’re taking this action - far less worried about offending anyone and just doing what needs to be done!

DoubleTweenQueen · 28/02/2020 09:35

IceWings - I would say the company are being pragmatic, as a highly contagious illness within the company would have significant operational and financial impact. They are also showing leadership and duty of care in what is an acute and, while in the midst of the first six months of this virus being in humans, unpredictable situation.

Whereisthechicken · 28/02/2020 09:37

I have a lung disease and I've woken up with aching ribs and lungs with I know is the start of a chest infection. The thought of waiting in the doctors waiting room to get medication fills me with dread and I'm not sure I can face it to be honest. I live in a small town with thousands of military personnel flying in from all over the world every day after doing adventure training, courses, coming to new units etc. I have no doubt in my mind that some will bring the virus back with them (probably those on sports as they tend to visit clubs and pubs in the evenings and do lots of socialising) and go on to spread it around the barracks like wildfire. I'm ex military and fully aware how quickly colds and coughs spread (especially after catching pneumonia from a particularly bad cough that went around). They live and work on top of each other and don't have the best hygiene and rarely see a doctor when ill* so it would affect a lot of them while spreading to wives and children. I'm surprised there isn't a case here yet actually or maybe there is..

*there is a stigma about seeing a doctor when you're ill or injured so many just avoid it at all costs. Those who do see a doctor to get bedded down or put on light duties get ripped, get called lazy, Jack, biff, get told they're faking it etc you get bullied basically unless you're really quite popular. When I had pneumonia and a plural effusion in the army I was on 18 tablets a day, in hospital for two weeks, my BMI dropped to 14, had xrays several times a week, one elderly doctor said I had the worst case of crackles he had ever heard but still the first day out of hospital I relentlessly bullied for months for faking or being a sickie etc even by seniors. They all have the same attitude to illness and injuries. One time a plt sgt asked me where one of his lcpls was and I gave him the message that the lcpl had been diagnosed with meningitis over the weekend (which actually turned out to be leukaemia) and the sgt went off on one effing and blinding "no he fucking wasn't! He's fucking lying, he's a fucking melt, he's lazy! Ring him and tell him to get back to fucking work now, no I'll fucking ring him" while stomping away. It's crazy and I have no doubt that if someone gets ill, they'll downplay it themselves and stay at work infecting tons of people.

Canceled Olympics Would Jolt Japan’s Financial System: BNP Paribas

If the coronavirus forces the scrapping of the Tokyo Olympics it would jolt Japan’s financial system and the shock could be reminiscent of the European debt crisis, according to BNP Paribas SA economist Ryutaro Kono.

In addition to the loss of inbound tourism spending, a canceled Olympics would trigger a jump in non-performing loans in the tourism and real estate sectors, Kono said in a report Friday. The government would likely have to respond with spending support for the economy and with bailouts for struggling regional banks, he said.

Been lurking from the start, thank you for all the updates.

I am a single parent with zero help and work for a company that don't pay sick pay at all.
I asked about the situation if this gets bigger and self isolation etc is needed or schools close, and my boss said absolutely no pay if off, so that's nice.

Compounded by the fact that he is meeting someone from an affected area later this who has only been in the country a few days. Total eyes rolls if I suggest that might not be a good idea.

I don't know, I truly hope this levels out but if not it's going to be a very bumpy ride.

Doodledoom · 28/02/2020 09:39

Newtonpass

I haven't been really ill, but my 2 and 3 year old were very poorly back in February, doctor was baffled as to what was wrong with them and just said it looks viral.

They had hugh fevers that we could barely get down and a nasty cough, they spent two weeks sleeping and barely eating and drinking.

I've never seen a viral infection so nasty before.

We're also in the Midlands. Does make you wonder though as doctors at the surgery couldn't tell me what was wrong with them
