I live in Singapore and reaction has been varied. All hand sanitzers are sold out and masks are hard to get. The Government has been very open and things are getting more normal here. My husbands company are still taking temperatures as they arrive at the front gate and several places I go for my hobby are taking temps. I went to a shopping centre today, had to get to the hairdresser, and it was quieter than usual but less people were wearing masks compared to 3/4 weeks ago.

We have actually been told (by the Government, so take that as you will) that wearing surgical masks when you are well is not advised as they become damp and a breeding ground for stuff. N95 masks are better but are hard to wear.

Singapore has dealt quickly and openly with this but it is much easier when you are a tiny, densely populated island.

My hand washing has always been regular and thorough but lately I have been not touching things directly, use an elbow for the lift etc. I am a bit worried, I have mild asthma but chesty things really knock me for six.

As of now there have been 96 cases, 66 have fully recovered and 30 are in hospital.

I'm not sure if this helps but there have been no deaths so far in Singapore. I hope this nasty virus just peters out and there are no more deaths.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/02/2020 08:54

We only have one bathroom too, and we've just accepted that if one of us gets it we'll all be getting it - there just isn't a practical way to fully isolate a member of the family in our living set-up

That's how we are looking at it, I was curious about what other people were doing.

RedToothBrush · 28/02/2020 08:56

It's nearly spring. I think it'll die off through the summer months

I'm interested in this. The spread hasn't stopped in the sun of Tenerife and surely warm, muggy environments are a breeding ground for germs?

It's in very hot countries.
Spanish flu didn't stop during the summer.
MERS another coronavirus emerged in the Middle East hence its name.
The swine flu epidemic in the UK PEAKED in July.

There is plenty of evidence that novel viruses do not act seasonally because of the lack of immunity in the population.

Frankly I'd be more surprised if the weather made any difference at all for Covid-19.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 08:58

It depends on my house. If my ill son gets it then I'm not isolating him from the family as he will probably get quite ill. If the rest of us get it, we do have a spare bedroom and a downstairs extra toilet so in that case I will attempt to keep him away somehow. Nightmare scenario really.

Foreign diplomats to be evacuated from North Korea as country steps up efforts to prevent virus outbreak

The German Embassy, French Cooperation Office, and Swiss Development Cooperation will close operations in the capital Pyongyang completely, said the source, who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity, given the extreme sensitivity of the current situation.

And

CNN previously reported foreign diplomats have been kept in complete isolation since early February, as the outbreak extended beyond mainland China. Diplomatic staff are not allowed to leave their compounds. All flights in and out of the country have also been suspended.

@RedToothBrush discussed recently with expert on R4 re: ‘temperature’ making a difference. Conclusion was it might but impossible to predict as yet.

Air con facilitates spread I believe re: Diamond Princess Etc.

EasyJet to cancel flights and impose pay freeze amid coronavirus fears
Decision will primarily involve routes to Italy, where there has been a spike in Covid-19 cases

EasyJet is cancelling flights and imposing a pay freeze as part of a number of emergency cost-cutting measures in an attempt to offset the impact of the escalating coronavirus crisis.

The company said the cancellation of flights would primarily affect routes to Italy, where a spike in coronavirus cases has sparked a drop in customer demand.

It is also responding to the virus with various cost-cutting measures, including a hiring, promotion and pay freeze, a delay to non-critical spending and cuts to its administrative budget. EasyJet will offer unpaid leave and will stop non-mandatory training to staff.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 09:01

I have a feeling it's going to be a busy day for cases. I'll be surprised if we don't get more here today.

Newtonpass · 28/02/2020 09:01

Yes BrieAndChilli that sounds like the same one! No runny noses to be seen but one hell of a sore throat.

Obviously, I hope it wasn't that as we sat in a busy a&e twice. But it highlights how impossible this may be to stop spreading. Thinking of all the places dc and I had been two weeks before we got ill...

All it will take is a few people who have may have it who have recently been to Italy etc. shrugging it off as a cold and not self isolating.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 09:02

easyJet will offer unpaid leave..they are such a shit company

Frazzled2207 · 28/02/2020 09:02

@Hyrana
That does sound that Singapore have dealt very well. Hopefully other countries can learn. Zero deaths is very reassuring.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 09:03

upper respiratory symptoms like a runny nose and sneezing are apparently not typical early Coronavirus symptoms. If memory serves only something like 4% of those affected report a runny nose. Fever and a dry cough are the things to watch out for.

I was in the doctors surgery yesterday and the new PHE coronavirus video was playing on a loop. It specifically mentioned a runny nose and a sore throat as things to watch out for and so people shouldn't think that they couldn't be infected just because they have a runny nose and sore throat. Aching muscles and tiredness are also common symptoms.

Having said that I have a close friend who is a senior A&E consultant in a very large A&E department who said "snot is generally a good sign" (i.e hopefully means its more likely to be something else and not Covid).

Someone was asking about the pods. The pods are to stop people from entering the hospitals - they get directed to the pods instead.

www.lemonde.fr/planete/article/2020/02/28/coronavirus-les-cas-se-multiplient-en-france-et-sur-la-base-aerienne-de-creil-dans-l-oise_6031109_3244.html
Coronavirus: the number of cases is increasing in France, and the "orbit" of Roissy airport is suspected
Twenty new cases were diagnosed in 24 hours, including twelve in the Oise. The Creil air base is particularly affected, with eight potential cases.

The latter now concerns several regions: two elderly people who participated in an organized trip to Egypt are undergoing intensive care in Brest and Dijon; the family and a relative of an already identified case (a 64-year-old man returning from Lombardy) are hospitalized in Annecy, and two other isolated cases of people who have also stayed in Italy are treated in Montpellier and at Bichat hospital in Paris for the most serious case.

And

But with now fourteen cases, the most important focus is in Creil and particularly concerns the air base. Thursday, we learned that a 55-year-old civilian working there had been placed in intensive care at the University Hospital Center (CHU) of Amiens after having stayed at Compiègne hospital without being initially diagnosed as carrying the SARS-CoV- virus. 2. Employed as a driver, he is the father of two children and a young grandfather.

The Ministry of Health had also announced that the first French coronavirus death was a 60-year-old teacher working in a college near Creil.

Airports.

Let's hope that areas enduring unseasonably wet conditions and mild weather don't get an explosion of biting insects.

easyJet will offer unpaid leave..they are such a shit company

To be fair I have sympathy. My phone has been ringing non stop with clients with coronavirus problems. Employees not coming in but not signed off, employees coming in when sick, what to do about employees who have to visit people's homes, what about additional PPE measures, what about pay, what about having to do deep clean if someone is off and self isolating, what about having to lay people off because disruption to components etc means work cannot continue etc etc (I'm an employment solicitor). For many smaller companies or low profit margin companies if they pay people in full who are not working then they won't be able to operate and they go bust and then those people don't have a job any more.

RedToothBrush · 28/02/2020 09:09

easyJet will offer unpaid leave..they are such a shit company

In fairness to easyjet the crisis potentially threatens the entire business as they will be taking heavy losses. The focus will be on merely saving the company so that people have a job in the long run. It's not enforced unpaid leave at this stage.

It's no consolation if you work for the company but I suspect we are going to see a lot more like this as companies just try to pay the bill and survive especially if the crisis is prolonged.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 09:11

Hasa do we know what happened in China when people couldn't work? Did they get money or food parcels? It's a logistical nightmare.

Hi been lurking and thought I’d jump on. A girl at my sons school is currently waiting on a result to see if she has the virus. She came back from Italy at the weekend but the school were told to only self isolate if they had symptoms

Germany Steps Up Quarantines to Contain Coronavirus Spread
About 1,000 people asked to stay home in town of Heinsberg
Europe is struggling to project an image of business as usual

A married couple with the disease attended a Carnival event in mid-February, where they had potential contact with about 400 people, according to Bild newspaper. Authorities in the German municipality of Heinsberg, near the Dutch border, quarantined family and friends of the people at the gathering, spokesman Ulrich Hollwitz said by phone.

And

Germany is monitoring transport links by air, sea and land and will ask international travelers to fill in landing cards stating where else they’ve traveled, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said on Thursday in Berlin.
