New case of #coronavirus in #Austria. Total at 6

jimmychooing · 28/02/2020 21:53

I mean no symptoms in nearly half that were tested positive

SansaSnark · 28/02/2020 21:53

It means that the virus doesn't have a 100% infection rate, or that they have managed to isolate themselves well enough to avoid exposure.

jimmychooing · 28/02/2020 21:55

Sorry I meant nearly 50% of positives on the cruise ship are asymptomatic

SansaSnark · 28/02/2020 21:55

Oh, sorry- missed the update. The lack of symptoms could mean they haven't started showing symptoms yet- I think it's been suggested that some people may go longer than 14 days without showing symptoms- or that it's possible to be infected and be a carrier and not show symptoms.

It's also possible the test could be throwing up some false positives.

Apologies these are both very scientific papers..

The news of the Iranian women is awful Sad

SansaSnark · 28/02/2020 21:58

The first cruise-ship cases only tested positive 15 days ago. I'd guess a lot of the positive tests on the ship will show some symptoms at some stage, but they probably caught the virus more recently.

It's also possible that some people can fight the virus off without ever showing symptoms.

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 22:00

I dont think how the Iranians are handling it is necessarily going to be even remotely how it plays out here. I dont think they are treating in the same way and being an Iranian women was never easy.

I also think the numbers are really low on both fronts.

I think Japan/Italy are really the ones to look at how it goes

SansaSnark · 28/02/2020 22:01

WHO says that some people who test positive don't show symptoms. However, the incubation period is up to 14 days, so some of the people testing positive without showing symptoms might show symptoms later.

jimmychooing · 28/02/2020 22:02

Worldometers are also reporting of the 821 active Italian cases that 412 are asymptomatic/mild. Obviously, there are too many in intensive care but this does give some hope I think?

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 22:04

Odd question, but if it's not affecting young/women, does that include trans women that are women?

ginandnappies · 28/02/2020 22:04

Terrifying. Family members came back from northern Italy before it all kicked off there (a day). Spent time with them and now one has came down with a fever etc. He's been swabbed, but now I'm sitting here panicking like mad. We've not seen him but seen 2 family members that were with him and they are fine so keeping fingers crossed. I wouldn't be too fussed about me but it's my toddler I'm worried about. So annoying because I've just got my anxiety finally under control with medication and therapy and this has flared it all up again :(

Ontopofthesunset · 28/02/2020 22:05

That's not true. The first cruise ship cases had tested positive by 5th February which is 24 days ago. The quarantine was originally scheduled to end on February 19th. The virus can take some time to become symptomatic and in some cases seems very mild or virtually asymptomatic, apparently. How else could it have spread so far in Italy without health officials noticing? It's because lots of people are not very unwell.

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 22:06

Nazanin has symptoms akin to a cold, her husband has said.

NaturalBornWoman · 28/02/2020 22:06

I did think about the cytokine storm thing and wonder, but I don't think that taking medication which actually works by significantly suppressing the immune system is ideal in these circumstances. I'm very aware of how many more colds and viruses I'm picking up since star the drugs and how much longer it's taking to shake them off. I've had one since just before Christmas that's still hanging about and at one point I had a cold sore which took 6 weeks to heal despite slathering on Zovirax from the first tingle. Also this disease is killing older people with other conditions and lowered immunity, not young healthy people with the strongest immune systems, so I'm not sure that cytokine storms are a major cause of death.

SansaSnark · 28/02/2020 22:08

Most cases of Coronavirus are mild and get better without medical attention. About 15-20% of people become more seriously ill, and the death rate is about 2.5%. If you are young and healthy, your risk of getting seriously ill seems to be lower.

The fatality rate of Corvid-19 is much lower than SARS or MERS- which is obviously good news. However, it's still quite a bit higher than the flu, and it's also possible the death rate could go up in countries with more elderly people, and also in countries where people don't have access to medical care.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/02/2020 22:12

I have an auto immune disease, like four of my closest friends, so my immune system over-reacts. Now I am terrified that it might kill me. I don’t know how to calm my system down.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:14

@NaturalBornWoman if you are on immunosuppressive drugs you should be taking aciclovir tablets when you have a cold sore. They clear it up in days.
My son has it for the same reason.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:16

Me too SirVix I've hashimotos disease. Son is liver transplant, mum diabetes, dad old and high blood pressure, husband smoker...
I'm really scared of what could happen

Wehttam · 28/02/2020 22:18

It’s interesting reading this, how the sheep really do follow the herd.

I urge you to ignore the narrative coming from BoJo and start readying yourselves for a change of direction in your daily lives.

Life pre 2020 will be the stuff of dreams.

Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/02/2020 22:19

ofwarren Hashimoto’s here too, and a lot of close friends. So I am very worried and on top I am worrying about the stress making my immune system more reactive.

Emlou07 · 28/02/2020 22:20

@Wehttam How very end is nigh of you...

Dusty01 · 28/02/2020 22:21

How would you suggest we prepare?

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 28/02/2020 22:21

I think worldometers is actually putting the death rate at 7%. The 2.5% is of all cases, the majority of which are still active and being treated. Of closed cases, 93% have fully recovered, 7% have died. This puts it closer in line with SARS and is actually very concerning.
