@BlackeyedSusan
If our church closed, our homeless and people in need in the community wouldn't be able to access our cafe and food bank.
The trouble is, society is so closely inter-threaded, that if one part breaks down or closes, it has a knock on affect on other's.
It's very hard to know what to do.

PotholeParadise · 28/02/2020 20:28

Does everyone really believe it came from an infected bat at a wet market! I think the other theory is more credible.

Yes. Because I did biology, in which we covered zoonotic diseases and the importance of hygiene and good animal husbandry around other species of animals to prevent this kind of thing happening.

The people who believe that it is more credible that it is a lab disease are generally the people who have never even heard the word "zoonose", and never understood they were ever present threats.

PotholeParadise · 28/02/2020 20:30

*Zoonosis, rather.

DressingGownofDoom · 28/02/2020 20:31

Why has this long running thread that has up until now been factual and informative with sensible discussion suddenly turned into conspiracy theory central Confused

keepmoving · 28/02/2020 20:33

@felicityfebruary I work in a very touchy feely industry but have told people I don't feel comfortable with all the hugging and air kissing that goes on knowing what's going on in the world. It has caused some raised eyebrows and I wondered if I was over-reacting but I now feel vindicated!

I wouldn't say I'm super concerned, but I do worry a little bit about getting supplies if we do end up ill, with corona or something else. I have just looked around four different shops and they're all almost out of paracetamol, ibuprofen, hand soap and bleach. Confused I really wanted some hand sanitiser too but apparently you now have to pay a million pounds for a small bottle...

Flaxmeadow · 28/02/2020 20:43

It was confirmed by the Hong Kong government that a dog belonging to a coronavirus patient had returned a "weak positive" for the virus. They report it's possible this was from environmental contamination of the dog's mouth and nose, so the dog has been taken into quarantine to be tested again.

Or vice versa. That dogs can pass it on to humans. We know that dogs are kept in live markets in China for consumption, as well as many other live animals.

I know its not the same as SARS/Corona but rabies is also a virus and it's transmitted to humans by both dogs and bats

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 20:45

keep moving My friend's French office have asked then to stop handshakes and kissing as greetings! If even the French are thinking twice..

Andromeida59 · 28/02/2020 20:46

If you're using hand sanitizer then make sure that it is not alcohol free as it won't remove the virus.

In regard to it escaping from a lab, it sounds absolutely ridiculous. My partner works in the medical faculty at UOM and has heard no such thing. However, what is being talked about is the likelihood that this may have been around for longer. My DP, our friend, DP's boss, my sister, all came down with a chest infection and fever over Christmas. It took ages to shift and the symptoms are similar.

IceWings · 28/02/2020 20:48

Fox News has just said that the first case in a dog has been confirmed
The owner had coronavirus. Considering the amount my dog licks me, I’d be very surprised if he didn’t have my germs in his mouth.

Slazengerbag · 28/02/2020 20:49

I haven’t read all of the thread lately so I apologise if this has been asked before.

What will happen to those who are already in poverty if they are in isolation for 2 weeks. At work we provide breakfast, lunch and snacks for quite a few students. I’m also really concerned that if schools close the children that are already neglected are going to be worse off. Has anything been said about this? This is really concerning me.

I feel very privileged that I have full freezer and larder. If we are isolated and not actually poorly I have enough to keep me occupied and will still have a roof over my head and the bills will still be paid. What will happen to those who are on gas and electric meters who can’t get out to top them up? What about those who rely on food banks to eat every week? I worry about what this will do to society.

toysoldier · 28/02/2020 20:49

That was me that said about the case being detected at West Berkshire Hospital. There's nothing definite, but the local area are all talking about it. Apparently it's the one yesterday that we have no other information about. But you know how it works, it's probably just a chain of gossip...

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 28/02/2020 20:51

Fox News has just said that the first case in a dog has been confirmed

Fox News, that bastion of exemplary reporting.

Trump's favourite news outlet.

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 20:53

really wanted some hand sanitiser too but apparently you now have to pay a million pounds for a small bottle...

Buy a large bottle of the highest proof vodka, etc, you can find and decant it into handy-size bottles, add tea tree?

Eat loads of garlic as its a strong anti viral, pref raw, and slice and leave for a few mins to develop nicely.

Also get as fit as you can, and eat plenty of organic raw veg and fruits to arm your system fully.

Its the best way to help you deal with anything in the absence of any medical options.

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 20:56

Dont eat extra garlic if taking blood thinners = dangerous!

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 21:00

Does everyone really believe it came from an infected bat at a wet market! I think the other theory is more credible.

Yes i 110% think this came from the wild.

As a biology graduate I have bern waiting for this scenario. As it's not the first and wont be the last. The truth is that nature can do this. Mankind thinks is able to control everything are we the ultimate intelligence. We simply are not. We can not control nature. We cant beat nature and there is tonnes more things like this waiting to happen. So it ever was and ever will be.

I think humans can't comprehend the consequences that we atent calling the shots here so a conspiracy is more palatable.

I seriously doubt this came from a lab.

But science and evolution let's us fight back. So it goes on. I think its like 9/11. People cant palate the fact the terrorist are highly intelligent people. Thinking it came from USA somehow gives them comfort they have control.

I could be wrong, just my opinion

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 21:02

On the subject of hand gel - I think have seen 70% vodka. Could be helpful for hands, cleaning and stress!

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 28/02/2020 21:02

Eat loads of garlic as its a strong anti viral, pref raw, and slice and leave for a few mins to develop nicely.

And it keeps everybody well away from you.

Problem is most garlic comes from China, so we might have some shortages.

PonderTweek · 28/02/2020 21:04

@usernameishistory, the vodka is a good idea! I could swig it when out and about as well. Grin Thanks!

MissPoldark · 28/02/2020 21:05

Are you sure? All the garlic I’ve ever bought comes from Spain.

OhMargo · 28/02/2020 21:05

For the worried well, just buy a cheap bottle of vodka and add a little liquid soap and shake well. Decant into the tiny hand dispensers or the big ones by your kitchen sink and however many bathrooms you have.

Don't drink it now!

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 21:05

@toysoldier I saw this about west Berkshire hospital www.newburytoday.co.uk/news/news/29497/coronavirus-testing-taking-place-at-west-berkshire-community-hospital.html
Is it not just been chosen as one of the 8 hospitals that are testing everyone who has cold or flu symptoms?
My hospital is one. They test everyone who comes to the host who has even mild symptoms.

DonkeyKong2019 · 28/02/2020 21:05

twitter.com/atrupar/status/1233423437286211585?s=19 this is what makes me nervous.

Dusty01 · 28/02/2020 21:06

The other theory is far more credible Mammon. I have a video explaining the credibility of the other theory but cannot link at the moment. Will try later.
