I really doubt that the consensus at a university is that this is a man-made virus from a lab.

I think someone’s been stringing you along there.

UnitDare · 28/02/2020 19:53

Does anyone know where in Surrey the GP surgery is?

georgedawes · 28/02/2020 19:53

Which VC mammon? I would be gobsmacked if one of the VCs in the city said that. Needs to be attributed to them really, rather than just a rumour.

Slazengerbag · 28/02/2020 19:54

I don’t know if this is true but Fox News has just said that the first case in a dog has been confirmed.

dollface19 · 28/02/2020 19:54

Your only meant to call @Whereisthechicken when you develop symptoms aren't you ? If you have travelled in the last 14 days to any of the other countries AND developed symptoms then you HAVE to call don't you ?
I was under the impression of this as my friends work colleague flew back from Australia stopping at Singapore and hasn't developed symptoms and has gone straight back to work etc ?

user127819 · 28/02/2020 19:58

@slazengerbag It was confirmed by the Hong Kong government that a dog belonging to a coronavirus patient had returned a "weak positive" for the virus. They report it's possible this was from environmental contamination of the dog's mouth and nose, so the dog has been taken into quarantine to be tested again.

nibdedibble · 28/02/2020 19:59

There was work done on the lab escape theory. It is not a lab escape.

WaterSheep · 28/02/2020 19:59

How many people here have rang 111 to say they have symptoms and has travelled/has not travelled/been in contact with a traveller yet has still been told they won't be tested?

No idea, and it's to early for any reliable figures. However, if I called now and said I had been to Italy, but not one of the specified areas, and had a sore throat / fever. I doubt they would be interested in testing me.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 19:59

I don’t know if this is true but Fox News has just said that the first case in a dog has been confirmed

So they did a test on someone's dog and found a 'weak positive' whatever that means however most scientists believe that it was most likely a contaminated test because it is highly unlikely that it's now started leaping across to dogs.

TBH I really think this shouldn't have been put in the public domain until they were 100% because no doubt some people will now think they need to dump (or worse, euthanise) their pets which they don't.

mammon · 28/02/2020 20:00

Well I can't put their name on here as it would open a can of worms so we shall have to leave it as a supposed rumour but these are all leading members of Manchester's business community so I highly doubt the person in question from the university would be stringing my husband's colleague along. Does everyone really believe it came from an infected bat at a wet market! I think the other theory is more credible.

DonkeyKong2019 · 28/02/2020 20:00

So in April I bought a big 300ml bottle of purrel for £3.49 it's currently available for £45. I also bought 2 x 6 packs of 60ml bottles for £6 each. Now available for £40 each!

That's horrendous

UserMcUserface · 28/02/2020 20:01

To the PP who said possible case detected at the pod in Newbury/Thatcham, are you able to say any more?

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 20:02

@mammon

Yes. Because that's how zoonotic viruses work.

Ebola came from people eating Chimps.

SARS came (most likely) from snakes.

Hendra virus comes from flying foxes via horses.

AIDS came from eating chimps.

There are lots and lots of zoonotic viruses and SARS started in the exact same way.

BunsyGirl · 28/02/2020 20:04

DonkeyKong2019 I have tried to buy some hand sanitiser in Aldi today as I am down to my last one. None in the two stores I went to. Just checked eBay and they are going at a ridiculous price. £4.50/5.00 for one tiny travel size.

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 20:04

Keepmoving I had thought about this in relation to the case of the man from Brighton. It was some of his friends in the chalet who picked up the virus but nothing seemed to happen from the flight or pub visit. In the German business transmission in Bavaria I imagined the visitor from China shaking hands and interacting quite closely during the working day.

I'm going to be so hands off in the future!

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 20:05

It's looking like the GP surgery is in Hazlemere in Surrey

mammon · 28/02/2020 20:05

Thank you for explaining. Maybe it's just my conspiracy theory head wanting to believe. I just thought it was interesting as the conversation certainly wasn't made up.

DonkeyKong2019 · 28/02/2020 20:05

@BunsyGirl if I wasn't worried about needing it I would be selling it too 😂

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 20:06

Sky News understands the British man who died in Japan after being infected with coronavirus while in quarantine on the Diamond Princess cruise ship was in his 70s and did not live in the UK

tangledyarn · 28/02/2020 20:09

If the GP has developed pneumonia they will have been tested then I'm guessing.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 20:09

Haslemere is like 15 miles from me....and Buxton is 15 miles from my DM!

woodencoffeetable · 28/02/2020 20:10

the dutch family returned from holiday in italy. if I read correctly the mother tested positive and the toddler has symptoms.
the mother is a parent helper to check for lice at older child's primary school.

Poppytime · 28/02/2020 20:12

@ those asking about testing - we have been to northern Italy in the last week and 3 out of 4 of the family have listed symptoms but they weren't interested in testing us.

I agree with those thinking it's all around already, we are just dismissing mild symptoms as usual winters colds

copperstrike76 · 28/02/2020 20:12

Bloody hell, Haslemere is just down the road Sad.

BunsyGirl · 28/02/2020 20:12

DonkeyKong2019 I think that profiteering is disgraceful. Several weeks ago a client of my husband’s sent a whole container of face masks back to his supplier in China because he though it was the decent thing to do. If only there were more people like that in the world.
