At what point will they decide they have a responsibility to say where the cases are? I can understand not saying if the person has recently come from abroad and has been self isolating etc.
But they've just announced a new case that was passed on in the UK. They don't know where it came from so at the moment it's in the community. I get not wanting to cause panic and a rush of people calling 111 for testing etc but people who are more at risk could reasonably argue that they need that info to protect themselves.

We appreciate and benefit from other countries saying where their cases are (I mean, it's helpful to the public and presumably health officials to know the areas in France, Italy, Spain etc where there are clusters) but refuse to give that information ourselves?

Hopefully this case without travel history they've just announced won't turn into a cluster of cases but if it does, surely they'll have to say where it is??

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 19:29

Oh yes GP touch screens. What's that all about.

georgedawes · 28/02/2020 19:29

Wow. Do they know how the GP caught it?

Going by Italy, it looks like it is about to explode here.

dollface19 · 28/02/2020 19:29

Hi all can I join. I have anxiety especially over any illness even a bug I can't stand! But this is very worrisome!
Somebody in my friends workplace flew back from Australia recently and had to stop in Singapore for a few hours and then flew back to UK, then went into work a few days later. The college my friend said has had no symptoms but their work has told them to go home as a precaution. My friend is besides herself as she had to work in close proximity with this person but washes and over sanitises hands daily. Xx

This is from the WHO report that was published today. It has reassured me as so many rumours around the airborne risk makes me want to freak out when I have to get onto public transport. I almost feel like I'm playing Russian Roulette.

As much as I hate to say this, Boris's advice seems to be sound (you have no idea just how much I hated typing that Wink).

Link to full report was shared further up the thread but here it is just on case: www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf

Routes of transmission^
COVID-19 is transmitted via droplets and fomites during close unprotected contact between an infector and infectee. Airborne spread has not been reported for COVID-19 and it is not believed to be a major driver of transmission based on available evidence; however, it can be envisaged if certain aerosol-generating procedures are conducted in health care facilities. Fecal shedding has been demonstrated from some patients, and viable virus has been identified in a limited number of case reports. However, the fecal-oral route does not appear to be a driver of COVID-19 transmission; its role and significance for COVID-19 remains to be determined. Viral shedding is discussed in the Technical Findings (Annex C).^

Household transmission^
In China, human-to-human transmission of the COVID-19 virus is largely occurring in families. The Joint Mission received detailed information from the investigation of clusters and some household transmission studies, which are ongoing in a number of Provinces. Among 344 clusters involving 1308 cases (out of a total 1836 cases reported) in Guangdong Province and Sichuan Province, most clusters (78%-85%) have occurred in families. Household transmission studies are currently underway, but preliminary studies ongoing in Guangdong estimate the secondary attack rate in households ranges from 3-10%.^

Of course you can join in @dollface19 😀
Welcome

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 19:36

I don't think they will ever start telling us @meredithgrey1. They would have done it from the beginning of they were going to.

ChipotleBlessing · 28/02/2020 19:36

I noticed in our GP surgery this week they’ve removed all the toys except the Duplo (which can easily be cleaned in the dishwasher or washing machine). Seems sensible.

georgedawes · 28/02/2020 19:37

from the Guardian - The Department of Health and Social Care has said the virus was passed on in the UK but the original source of the virus was “unclear”. It added that there was no “immediately identifiable link” to overseas travel.

The virus was passed on in the UK but the original source of the virus is unclear at this stage. We do not currently have complete understanding of the chain of transmission in this case, but there is no immediately identifiable link to overseas travel.

Given the recent increases in international case numbers, especially Europe, it is highly likely that we will soon see some instances of community transmission in the UK.

Anyone can join in, however if you have healthy anxiety this thread possibly isn’t the best for you to join.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 19:38

They don't know how the GP caught it yet so are now doing contact tracing to find who he caught it from and who he could have passed it to.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 28/02/2020 19:38

I’m if the understand patient zero has not been found?

copperstrike76 · 28/02/2020 19:39

Is it just me, or is it starting to get quite scary now? What are Boris and co doing this weekend that makes a COBRA meeting this afternoon or this evening not possible?

WaterSheep · 28/02/2020 19:40

patient zero has not been found?

Exactly like Italy, and look what's happend there.

georgedawes · 28/02/2020 19:40

Makes you wonder why a GP in Surrey was tested with no known travel link or a link to another case?

This must, must be the tip of the iceberg, i.e. like Italy 2 weeks ago.

meredithgrey1 · 28/02/2020 19:43

Makes you wonder why a GP in Surrey was tested with no known travel link or a link to another case?

Maybe they have a different policy for testing healthcare professionals? Obviously it's really important to make sure GPs who see loads of patients every day do not have the virus, so maybe the threshold for testing is lower?

NaturalBornWoman · 28/02/2020 19:44

I went to the doctors today to discuss stopping my drugs which suppress my immune system. The woman who went to the screen in front of me first pondered and touched her face, then booked in and walked away without using the sanitizer which is right by the screen. I think they need to turn these off now. I cleaned it with an alcohol wipe before using it and used the hand stuff afterwards because I'm determined these dirty bastards are not going to see me off!

mammon · 28/02/2020 19:46

Hello, lurker here, thank you for all the useful information. I don't know if this has already been said as I only joined at thread #5 but my husband has been telling me that at a business event today one of the people he was with said he had been in conversation with the vice-chancellor of a Manchester university and the consensus there is that this is definitely a man-made virus that has come from the lab in Wuhan. There's a few references to it namely the New York Post article which mentions that nearly word for word and also claims SARS was. www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2020/02/22/dont-buy-chinas-story-the-coronavirus-may-have-leaked-from-a-lab/amp/
Does anyone else also work in that field that agrees? I've thought that from the start but then I do like a conspiracy theory...

BloomedAgain · 28/02/2020 19:48

Did they agree to stop you using the immune suppressants Natural?

RedToothBrush · 28/02/2020 19:48

2nd Dutch case has been in a kindergarten and school last week.

Ontopofthesunset · 28/02/2020 19:48

To be fair the New York Post is rated the least credible news source in New York.

Whereisthechicken · 28/02/2020 19:50

How many people here have rang 111 to say they have symptoms and has travelled/has not travelled/been in contact with a traveller yet has still been told they won't be tested? Interested to know if their turning a blind eye to this

Whereisthechicken · 28/02/2020 19:51

They're* oops!

georgedawes · 28/02/2020 19:51

Well maybe, Meredith (and you'd hope so) but I doubt it. I work in a related field on the doorstep of one of the cases and all we've had is the official guidance available on the gov website, never mind testing or contacting us to see if we're ill.

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 19:52

Can the touch screens be used with some sort of stylus, so nothing needs to be personally touched?

That would be the way to go, each person use their own pointing device, or go to the reception to check in and join the long infectious queue

Same for the greedy parking Nazis screens everywhere! Recording everyones data as they roam and spread their germs.

Needs to stop, now.
