I think the virus is already here and many of us have already been affected.

The advice given to us seems very bizarre and narrow minded. The initial advice was over people who had travelled to Wuhan/China, but no one appears to have considered that, prior to the Wuhan lock down, Chinese people who were possibly already infected also travelled to Europe and Britain.

The parents of one of my neighbours, who has been very ill over the past fortnight with a dry cough and chest pain and her mother feeling very ill with a dry cough, hadn't travelled to China or Italy or Iran, but her parents had gone on a cruise in late January with Chinese passengers on the same ship. I suspect they all may have/had Covid-19, but, obviously, they became poorly before the alerts and none of them travelled to China. China, instead, came to them, iyswim.

And the advice we've got locally is appalling, along the lines of "if you have a cough, call 111." When we asked the advisor about how people would personally assess whether their cough was a coronavirus cough or a different virus cough, there were just blank looks. How are people supposed to determine whether they should self-isolate?

It's all so woolly and not properly thought through.

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 18:24

its everywhere that it is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)

That has a 9.6% death rate as well so in many ways sister is correct.

It also hit the over 55s much more than the under 24 so I dont think this is that dissimilar apart from its infection rate

Pinktoes77 · 28/02/2020 18:26

I think they may have at that start mojo But it's been all covid 19 since they named it. But then it said its official name is SARS -CoV 2 , so I guess I was wondering if it was SARS that's why they are closing borders and isolating people, they never do that for flu.

Fortyquinn · 28/02/2020 18:27

What part of the world are you in and have you seen anyone wearing masks? Have the shops been low in stock?

I'm in Dublin, there aren't any hand sanitizers to be had or masks. I checked 4 chemists, 2 large diy stores and 2 different Tescos and one Aldi today. Hand soap and normal soap very low, zero anti bac wipes to be seen. Very little disinfectant like dettol. Paracetamol stocks low. Haven't seen anyone wearing masks. Nobody really talking about it . But people must be worried if shelves are empty.

The president of Qom medical science university, 10 drs and 2 assistants have reportedly contracted the virus.

Also several prominent government officials/clerics.

As with Wuhan there was a cover up in the early days and now it's out of control. Added to this religious leaders are still telling people to go out and kiss statues.

Of course we have been receiving flights from Iran without checks.

A mother I was talking to told me her son spent half term skiing in Northern Italy with her parents, not in one of the areas the virus is in. On Monday she sent him to school as usual. Then she got a call from school to collect him because of his holiday. She took him home and rang 111. They told her as he hadn't been to one of the known areas to send him back to school again 💁‍♀️ The conflicting advice between schools and NHS 111 is appalling!!!

The influence of COVID-19 on the human body is like a combination of SARS and AIDS as it damages both the lungs and immune systems," Peng Zhiyong, director of the intensive care unit of the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in Wuhan, told the Global Times on Friday

Moomin8 · 28/02/2020 18:30

Who actually believes the official narrative that this came from a market? And did not escape from a lab?

Temporaryanonymity · 28/02/2020 18:30

We have now had a letter from the school telling us that someone with a connection with the school has tested positive and the risk to our children is no higher than that of the general public.

It is school as usual on Monday.

Devlesko · 28/02/2020 18:31

I think the biggest mistake is expecting people to self isolate, it can't be guaranteed at all, some people are stupid.

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 18:32

Yes I definitely think if the Iran death numbers are that high it is because it is rampant and out of control

HeIenaDove · 28/02/2020 18:32

This country couldnt organise an orgy in a brothel.

nottoday3000 · 28/02/2020 18:33

Obviously easier said than done why don't they stop all international travel for a month and see what happens I work for a supermarket and saw two people with masks on yet there I am serving all types of people ! I felt a bit Germy when I got home especially when they are standing there with their loyalty cards in their mouth and touching money think I might dig out my work gloves 🧤

AvocadoOwl · 28/02/2020 18:33

Yikes @Temporaryanonymity. Does this relate to a confirmed case already in the news?

Sassenach85 · 28/02/2020 18:34

As soon as I hear that, I’m taking my dd out of school I don’t care what the advice is

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 18:35

The influence of COVID-19 on the human body is like a combination of SARS and AIDS as it damages both the lungs and immune systems

= not the flu. It's not remotely like the flu.

The only reason people say it's like the flu is that if you get a mild version of it, it feels like the flu (sore throat, fever, muscle and joint pain, cough).

But it isn't like the flu because it causes 1 in 5 people to be hospitalised with pneumonia and anywhere from 2-5% to die (which is, at best 20 x the rate of the flu).

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 18:37

I'm not one for rumour but the twittersphere is saying 2 more cases..

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 18:37

Does the Twittersphere have any idea of location?

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 18:38

It's probably not true though. I guess everyone is worried at how late this report is!

HeIenaDove · 28/02/2020 18:38

@Devlesko this obviously needs posting again

Wetherspoons has sent out a briefing on Coronavirus and has made clear that even if employees are in quarantine by orders of the Government, that they will still not receive sick pay from day one.

The company is forcing workers to choose between public health and making rent.

Spacecadetagain · 28/02/2020 18:38

Joining this thread as personally I am worried . My nine year old DD is recovering from major surgery and I have underlying health problems so have concerns . The local high school closed at the beginning of the week as a pupil who had been to Italy in the half term complained of feeling unwell . They are deep cleaning the school and re opening on Monday but I don’t know if it’s been confirmed as The virus .

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 18:38

Yes if we look at the fact it takes 9-11 days for serious symptoms to appear it must have been around awhile everywhere and now we are starting to see it appearing.

2 seems low

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 18:39

It's hinting at that GP in Surrey connection. Possibly him and his wife.

I must say I work at a busy non London airport and have seen no masks and we have plenty of flights coming in from northern Italy as well. With no temp checksI am still on the fence of being worried or thinking its a slight over reaction but talking to people coming through the airport the general consensus is that people feel the Who have sort of cried wolf too many times befor when it was not as serious as first thought so people assume this is the same..
