My point exactly snowdrops. We could have took a bit of a disruption to daily life by keeping people returning from north Italy in quarantine at home. We haven’t and are now most likely going to suffer way more disruption when people get ill.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 28/02/2020 18:01

We need to close our borders to anyone who has been to Iran in the last 2 months.

Snowdropsdelight · 28/02/2020 18:01

Unlucky with the ocado at least I'm not sure if the drivers at least would be able to isolate, perhaps if they knocked at left shopping on door rather than had much face to face.
Much is done by robots, I know other people shops will be different but with ocado the delivery driver may be in a position to hold back...

No hand sanitizers in waitrose earlier.
Dh is going to hunt some down tomorrow.

Legoandloldolls · 28/02/2020 18:03

I cant keep up.any more. I live rurally inbetween two little market towns and they have closed a local health centre for a deep clean.

I'm not filled with glee that cobra isn't being held until Monday. Its definitely going to kick off here soon enough.

But now it seems that any lockdown is unlikely. A international school I know has just got into trouble with the local gp after the school took the gp posters and reprinted them with altered advice from PHE. So there are enough "I know better than PHE even though I'm just a manager" among us to help the country fall apart. The school has Chinese and Italian students and changed the posters to downplay phe advice.

Snowdropsdelight · 28/02/2020 18:03

Yours... What about other middle Eastern counties like Saudi arabia, which hosts religious gatherings. Oman etc.
I specifically think Saudi will explode because of Iranians visiting for religion purposes.

Snowdropsdelight · 28/02/2020 18:04

Did anyone's see the doctor on sky news almost laughing before sky man explained that 111 was telling people to go to the gp.

She looked perplexed and said of course that's silly, that defeats the purpose of self isolation!!!

MaxNormal · 28/02/2020 18:05

Snowdropsdelight apparently Saudi has stopped all religious travel. Which must be costing them a bomb but is very sensible.

My amazon driver turned up (with a desk lamp) with vinyl gloves on and a facemask. I don't blame him

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 18:07

A Norwegian doctor has tested positive for #Coronavirus

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 18:08

Snowdrops I find I'm better off not watching the news.

I'm off to watch some comedy to help my mood!

Skyejuly · 28/02/2020 18:10

No one here has been seen in gloves or masks.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 18:12

There are 85 people in intensive care in just one region of Italy apparently

I wondered why countries were closing borders over what they are calling the flu they never have before. Until I saw SARS was SARS -CoV and that the coronavirus now is SARS - CoV 2 = covid 19 , so is our government lying to us to stop people panicking that is actually SARS that's doing the rounds hence the global worry about a so called flu?

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 18:13

Italy reports 233 new cases of coronavirus and 4 new deaths, raising total to 888 cases and 21 deaths t.co/eUoE2b20hL

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 18:13

Interestingly I just had something dropped off by Amazon. He rang the doorbell and left the parcel at the door.

I suspect they must have had a company notice around limiting contact.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 18:15

@Pinktoes77

It would be better described as SARS' sister.

I don't think that's been hidden from anyone but to be fair I don't get my news from the mainstream media so I don't know...

Have they not said it's closely linked to SARS?

Snowdropsdelight · 28/02/2020 18:16

I think Saudi blocking travel is brilliant but again perhaps too late.

People in office have just got back from Saudi!

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 18:16

In fact the best way to describe it would be SARS' less ugly but much more social sister.

The death rate for each individual seems to be lower but it's much more infectious.

Originalyellowbelly · 28/02/2020 18:19

My daughter is an ANP in a GP surgery, she has been saying that people have been coming in since Christmas with very severe and unusual flu like symptoms. I think this virus has been among us for longer that originally believed.

Alone07 · 28/02/2020 18:19

I'm sure I've read COVID19 shares 96% with SARS

nellodee · 28/02/2020 18:19

I don't think most people think it's as simple as "shut everything down!" but limiting spread is very important.

Peak Prosperity had an interesting section in one of their videos. The gist was, any government has to balance things with regards to a pandemic. First, you want as few people as possible to catch it, or the virus to spread as slowly as possible, so you want to keep your people from moving around too much. On the other hand, you want to make sure the economy can at the very least feed all those people in lockdown, and hopefully, in addition, keep your economy healthy for after the epidemic has passed. Lastly, you need to minimise deaths, by keeping your health service up and running and stopping it getting overrun. All of these three things are in opposition to each other, but none of them can be completely neglected without eventually damaging the others as well.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 28/02/2020 18:21

Do we know anything about the ages of the seriously ill in Italy? I’m curious to see if it matches the official line we’ve been given of “older, underlying conditions” as I’m starting to suspect that’s not the case at all

Packingsoapandwater · 28/02/2020 18:22

I think the virus is already here and many of us have already been affected.

The advice given to us seems very bizarre and narrow minded. The initial advice was over people who had travelled to Wuhan/China, but no one appears to have considered that, prior to the Wuhan lock down, Chinese people who were possibly already infected also travelled to Europe and Britain.

The parents of one of my neighbours, who has been very ill over the past fortnight with a dry cough and chest pain and her mother feeling very ill with a dry cough, hadn't travelled to China or Italy or Iran, but her parents had gone on a cruise in late January with Chinese passengers on the same ship. I suspect they all may have/had Covid-19, but, obviously, they became poorly before the alerts and none of them travelled to China. China, instead, came to them, iyswim.

And the advice we've got locally is appalling, along the lines of "if you have a cough, call 111." When we asked the advisor about how people would personally assess whether their cough was a coronavirus cough or a different virus cough, there were just blank looks. How are people supposed to determine whether they should self-isolate?

It's all so woolly and not properly thought through.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 28/02/2020 18:22

@wheresmymojo I think it's a good company policy, amazon could profit massively from increased demand for home deliveries but not if their workforce gets sick.

Re: 85 people in ITU in one region in italy the offical figues say 56 serious/critical in whole country for CV this suggests to me that a lot of those were in ITU already i.e. are not CV. Buy illustartes the issue. Do you simply withdraw ITU treatment from complex cases with low chances to give the bed to someone young, fit and healthy with a much better chance of survival?

And what is severe vs critical. I understand critical but what is severe? I have heard some people define it as having shortness of breath type pneumonia. I know a few people who have had this over the years and have been managed at home as this was bacterial.

jimmychooing · 28/02/2020 18:22

How do we square the asymptomatic numbers on the DP cruise ship? : Japan: The 705 people from the “Diamond Princess” cruise ship are listed separately and they’re not included in the Japanese government’s official count. 380 were asymptomatic
