Some of those things come at no cost to the economy

All of those things come at some cost to the economy. Even discouraging social gatherings - eg people not going out for meals, not buying food and drink for parties at home.

Maybe not the religious gatherings one.

I wonder, if this really takes a hold, whether the government and the EU will have to delay the trade talks and the government will have to give up on its idea of not extending transition. Politicians and civil servants can get and spread the virus too.

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 17:11

ofwarren where is that about iran I cant find it anywhere

Ciwirocks · 28/02/2020 17:12

166 new cases in Italy and 4 new deaths on worldometer

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 17:12

I'll find where they got the source now Quartz
They have never posted something that wasn't right so far

Thinkingabout1t · 28/02/2020 17:12

Our surgery has stopped patients medication in the past when they dont come in for routine appointments and med reviews.

Doctors understandably mind if patients just don’t show up. But surely not if the patient rings to cancel an appointment in these circumstances, Helena?

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 17:13

I just cant find the article anywhere on bbc or twitter

the italian cases looks about right for the 2.5%

AvocadoOwl · 28/02/2020 17:14

Surrey GP had no travel history which doesn't bode well. Presumably contract tracing will be straightforward to track down whichever patient infected him (assuming that's the likely scenario rather than him catching it in Tescos).

Worst case scenario we have an undetected outbreak in Surrey.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 17:15

It's from BNO newsroom on twitter. They are a blue ticked account and I've never seen them share something incorrect.
I've messaged them and asked for the source.
Those numbers are huge

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 17:15

hubeie is the same size as England and they managed to contain it to under 100k cases I think things look much more positive than they may seem.

They aren't.

They only contained it to that level because they put 750 million people (10% of the global population) on lockdown.

The UK will not put large populations on lockdown and hence we will see many more cases as it cannot be stopped at 80k cases without it.

BentBastard · 28/02/2020 17:15

Is this the rumoured Leatherhead case or a different one?

AvocadoOwl · 28/02/2020 17:17

This one- www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/28/fears-that-surrey-gp-is-uks-latest-coronavirus-victim

Not confirmed by PHE but the fact he's en route to a specialist hospital suggests it's a soon to be confirmed case.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 17:19

Right, the source is BBC Persia
www.bbc.com/persian/amp/iran-51676966?__twitter_impression=true

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 17:21

the same page has this

en.radiofarda.com/a/canadian-researchers-say-18-000-people-might-be-infected-with-coronavirus-in-iran-/30455564.html

Which read in context of the other one makes a lot of sense

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 17:21

Again please don't take anything I say as I fact or to quote a source

Ok!

donbelieveit · 28/02/2020 17:22

it's mask time

A primary school parent came back from Hubei in mid Feb before half term.

He flew a strange route back to avoid quarantine.

He has a baby and a reception aged child. The latter went into school.

The community found out he had been away and parents were worried so the child was sent home after best part of the day in school confined with a staff member.

At that point no advice was being given to schools on what to do by Public Health England so the school took a decision.

What made it especially concerning was the deception that the dad circumvented quarantine. What a selfish prick with a baby, wife and young girl at home.

AvocadoOwl · 28/02/2020 17:25

Neil Ferguson said in his latest video that he believed Iran must have 10s of thousands of cases to warrant their death rate, and Italy in the 1000s too.

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 17:25

I suspect Iran is massively covering up and that the number of deaths is fairly accurate - but the number of cases is down

Which if you think about the number that has spread to different countries based on travel from Iran (far more than China recently) the number of cases must be more. And that is where the figure of 18,000 comes from.

I think it is going to spread everywhere and I thnk

Skyejuly · 28/02/2020 17:25

Selfish!
The ice Berg is tipping

amd4578 · 28/02/2020 17:25

@wheresmymojo how do we know our government won't do that.. Do you think China would have done that if they only had 19 cases?

Skyejuly · 28/02/2020 17:26

I dont think it was in the plan was it?

Frazzled2207 · 28/02/2020 17:26

@middleager
Indeed
Just because he flew back indirectly shouldn't mean he avoids quarantining himself and his son
