In the Guardian today: Yes, it is worse than the flu: busting the coronavirus myths

woodencoffeetable · 28/02/2020 15:13

official WHO guidance for the public

for reassurance and preparedness.

woodencoffeetable · 28/02/2020 15:15

I seen some videos today of china dissolving dead bodies and bodies of people dropping dead... not sure how accurate/true this is ?

big pinch of salt.
what I can imagine is the coroner using an disinfectant to protect themselves and the public when taking away bodies.

Glittercandle · 28/02/2020 15:17

I think dissolving was a typo and the poster meant disposing.

janemaster · 28/02/2020 15:18

You would be unlikely to drop dead with this. People may have dropped dead of another illness though.

OptimisticSix · 28/02/2020 15:18

@salty78 I hope its not true, DS is very capable but due to consistent CBArsedness his predicted grades are pretty poor. He has however been putting in some revision (well some for him Grin) lately so hoping his actual grades will be much better!

Wehttam · 28/02/2020 15:19

Those in the gig economy or on ZHC, I definitely feel your concern. Remember though, we are a first world country, a civilised society with a government who can not be seen to shirk their responsibility to those in need. I am sure (and we all hope) that as we speak here, right now, there are plans being drawn up to mitigate the risk of such a fundamental disaster to those most at risk of financial calamity.

My BiL is in a very similar situation, no savings, no nothing really without weekly pay. Perhaps once this event is over we will all come to together and rebalance the disparities between one another.

An example of what 'good' looks like from Korea in terms of contact tracing and transparency...

big pinch of salt.
what I can imagine is the coroner using an disinfectant to protect themselves and the public when taking away bodies.

The videos I saw were videos of people dropping dead in airports, people with face masks... public side walks with dead people, covered in white blankets... people dead outside court room stairs....

Hospitals with covered and bagged dead bodies, in the midst of hospitals/treatment rooms with Infected people, dead bodies just thrown over hospital beds....

As I said I’m not sure I’d this are accurate... however the videos/pictures were harrowing.

Wehttam · 28/02/2020 15:21

I suggest lots of snacks on hand and maybe get Netflix if you don’t already have it....

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 15:22

The videos of disposing of bodies (I'm guessing it's the ones putting body bags in vans, etc?).

Can't say for sure obviously but I suspect those could be true. At the peak there were 1,000 extra deaths a day in (primarily) Wuhan on top of 'normal' deaths and they have to get to the crem somehow...

FlyingNorth · 28/02/2020 15:22

lol theres no "hysteria"
Not hysteria, agreed, but we're on page 20 of thread 6, and that's just this thread. It's feeding the general mood and I agree some people are more interested in stirring the pot than exchanging information. Minute by minute updates don't make a difference to preparedness.

Enoughisenoughhhhh · 28/02/2020 15:22

Wow @wehttam, that is some faith you are displaying in our politicians! I wish I was able to share it.

Blueberryham · 28/02/2020 15:23

It’s not just a case of “if the schools go the hospitals will ground to a halt as the staff will be caring for the children” cos if the spread is allowed to go through the community the hospitals may ground to halt anyway as all the staff are ill and they are inundated with patients

Blueberryham · 28/02/2020 15:23

*close not go

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 28/02/2020 15:24

The videos of disposing of bodies (I'm guessing it's the ones putting body bags in vans, etc?).

No unfortunately not, I’m really not wanting to link the pictures/videos... as I said they were harrowing viewings, and as said previously I have no idea if these are accurate.

I could PM people when I get home, however I wished I never personally seen them, it’s horrific viewing.

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 15:25

Woodencoffeetable thanks for that link.

I had to laugh though as I was in a shop earlier where a young woman was coughing right by me. A little dry cough that she probably thought was nothing. No attempt to cover her mouth. Yeuch! Note to self, shop at quiet times when no queue!

Please would they broadcast this advice all over the tv and internet.

(To add a bit of extra spice she appeared to be an international air traveller, little pull along bag, chic clothes. You couldn't make it up.)

KettleOn919 · 28/02/2020 15:25

My final question is how anyone is meant to know they've got corona virus in the first place? Temperatures, coughs, sore throats, 'flu-like symptoms' - these are par for the winter's course around here. GP doesn't want to know and cant prescribe anything to help anyway so we do not waste everyone's time with appointments for every malaise that comes along. We get on with it because we have to. So how would I know if I had it, or one of the dc did?

I'm in that situation right now. Hacking and wheezing my way into third week of a ceaseless dry cough preceded by a killer sore throat. I've not travelled, so GP surgery immediately discounted possibility of coronavirus. What are we meant to do, eh? Just assume it's some bizarrely long-lasting ordinary virus and carry on as normal?

RocketFire · 28/02/2020 15:26

@FlyingNorth

maybe people just like to be informed and to discuss it, including the minute by minute updates

its interesting and most people aren't worried by it we are just interested!!

jeez, mumsnet!! turning a bit fluffy and snowflakes lately!

userxx · 28/02/2020 15:27

Hacking and wheezing my way into third week of a ceaseless dry cough preceded by a killer sore throat

That sounds like what I had over Xmas. Took about 6 weks to fully shift it.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 15:27

WHO raises risk assessment for coronavirus to "very high" at global level

comfypantsisme · 28/02/2020 15:30

well for all yous with kids and fretting about their education, there are online schools. weve used 1 for ds since september (as home educators). Its really good!

google them. interhigh (watch the smallprint/contracts), myonlineschooling.....

theres a few. just in case.....

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 15:30

public side walks with dead people, covered in white blankets..

This part was certainly accurate and was shown on the Australian four corners documentary (like panorama)

janemaster · 28/02/2020 15:32

I have just googled and the videos of people dropping dead are false.
www.snopes.com/fact-check/people-collapsing-coronavirus/

"In one case, it looks like a person was the victim of a traffic accident. In another, it appears that a man suffered a head injury. But since these videos appeared online during heightened hysteria about an outbreak of an illness, it’s easy to see how a passerby may have made the assumption that these incidents were connected to the coronavirus. "

comfypantsisme · 28/02/2020 15:32

I think this virus is more around us than we think (and I suspect the government know it!) and what some of us may see as a winter bug is not. The only real way to get a true picture would be to test every person in the UK. Obviously thats not feasable!!

I think good handwashing technique etc is the way to go.
