Have watched these threads with interest. I have young DC in childcare, commute by public transport 2h a day and work in HE. So I reckon I would be a high risk candidate if and when things kick off.
Advice on self isolation at home would be impossible for me - we only have 1 bathroom, kids who still need attention at night, 1 still breastfeeding. So holing up 1 person per room just wouldnt be a possibility. Surely this is far from unusual? The advice seems ridiculous given how v many people would simply be unable to follow it.
For contractual reasons I dont receive sick pay. Holiday pay is paid at the end of the year. There is no means for me to take time off work and be paid. There are countless people in the so called gig economy in the same boat. What are they / we supposed to do in the event that extended time off work is mandated / requested / simply in everyone's best interests? If this is you, what are you planning to do? To me this seems a far greater concern than filling up my cupboards with extra tins of beans.
As an aside, do none of the people panicking about n95 masks / hand gel shop on Amazon? Have just checked for both those items having read questions on this thread and both seem to be in stock.
My final question is how anyone is meant to know they've got corona virus in the first place? Temperatures, coughs, sore throats, 'flu-like symptoms' - these are par for the winter's course around here. GP doesn't want to know and cant prescribe anything to help anyway so we do not waste everyone's time with appointments for every malaise that comes along. We get on with it because we have to. So how would I know if I had it, or one of the dc did?
Sorry for the massively rambling post. I cannot seem to decide whether to be worried and start trying to take steps towards preparedness, whether it's all a load of overblown paranoia or whether it's just a futile waste of energy either way because actually a person in my position can do precisely nothing except get on with their life in the normal way.
