I'm pulling my kids out of school as of next week. It's very clear that the Government are not making decisions to contain this right now and I don't want my children to be collateral damage.

WaterSheep · 28/02/2020 10:44

but how does anyone know they're potentially contagious?

They can't know for sure, but if people knew rough areas of the confirmed cases they would be less likely to ignore some of the milder symptoms, and think CV rather than feeling under the weather.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:44

I don't blame you Dominic we aren't being given any information so we can't protect ourselves. Any of the 3 we don't have any information on, could be where you or I live and we would never be told.

Newjez · 28/02/2020 10:44

And just as all this is kicking off, it starts kicking off in Syria with millions of refugees potentially on the move into a CV pandemic. Good timing or what?

mondaynoon if you have a sore throat you must call 111. Its a reportable symptom if you've been to Northern Italy.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:45

People are also more likely to up their hand hygiene and be more careful if they know there have been cases where they live.

Emlou07 · 28/02/2020 10:46

@dominicCummingsForehead

Are you located somewhere near one of the confirmed cases or are you just not taking any risks?

Sorry, haven't rtft

That's the point @EmLou27 , how would we know if we are near a case? They aren't telling us!

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:48

60 CASES OF #CORONAVIRUS IN #GERMANY

Emlou07 · 28/02/2020 10:49

How long will you keep them off though? I have two primary age children and this has crossed my mind.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:51

I can keep mine off till the risk dies down. It's only going to get worse.
By keep off, I mean withdraw to home educate.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:51

#Iran reports 8 new deaths and 143 cases of #coronavirus in the last 24 hours

Delatron · 28/02/2020 10:53

Our government won’t cancel events, they won’t shut schools, they won’t cancel any flights from affected areas.
We did have a chance to contain this but that has passed now.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:54

Just waiting for the Daily Mail headline, "parents worried about coronavirus withdraw their children to home educate".
Fuck off Daily Mail

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:54

FIRST case of #Coronavirus in Azerbaijan

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 10:54

Ia that 60 new cases in Germany, ofwarren, or a new total of 60 (up from 49)?

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:54

I'll check now lark

If I knew there was case in my town I would be even more fastidious about hand washing. I wouldn’t go to the shops, I’d get online delivery etc. I think we should be told where the outbreaks are occurring. It’s doubtful that these are isolated cases.

DominicCummingsForehead · 28/02/2020 10:57

@Emlou07 no, we're in the south west - rural. And my children are not immunocompromised...although I do have a baby under 1.

I'm just not prepared to wait for the Government to decide to close the schools, which they will do only when it's already exploded everywhere, if they even do at all.

There is so much we don't know about this virus, but what we do know is rather alarming. The rate of spread alone is astronomical, never mind the huge proportion of case fatalities (waaaay over 2%!) in Italy already.

I also believe we are going to be hit far worse than China because a) we do not have a dictatorial leadership forcing massive containment measures irrespective of human rights b) our NHS is already wholly inadequate and MANY people are going to be dying who wouldn't have with good clinical care. More than in China.

I'm making a decision based solely on protecting my own family - which the Government are not and will not be doing.

Crunchymum · 28/02/2020 10:57

I have a few questions, if anyone can help.

are people without* symptoms being tested?
(Read on another thread that there have been cases of people testing positive without symptoms, but not sure if that is true!!)

  • if the answer to the above question is yes, then does this mean the virus can be spread by someone who is completely symptom-less?
Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 10:58

I think when it is the area it is known to those in the area. Based on listening to those who have schools in the area last night at the hospital there was some awareness.

Children are an interesting one as dont seem to be that affected but very well might be carriers

Crunchymum · 28/02/2020 10:58

PS: thanks to anyone who can answer my questions.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 10:58
  1. yes at the moment they are testing close contacts of those who have tested positive even where they don't have symptoms
  1. yes it can be spread by those without symptoms.
