HasaDigaEebowai

Regarding cleaning, I suspect it's similar on airplanes / public transport. Not enough time to do a thorough job, and things are easily missed.

NettleTea · 28/02/2020 10:12

@AmelieTaylor I totally agree
I mean the likelihood is low, but for the sake of a test.
Its exactly why we will end up with more trouble than needed.

we need, as a country, to be ahead of the ball rather than playing some form of rubbish catch up

Its why I dont understand the 'only isolate if you have symptoms'

I suspect this is more to do with trying to underplay it because of the impact on the economy and social impact.

AmelieTaylor · 28/02/2020 10:13

@HasaDigaEebowai. WOW. JESUS, give me the rum any day! Please tell me they don’t need to actually invest it, just sniff it?!

The hospitals (IMO) need to worry less about those idiots and more about public safety and start using alcohol gel now. Surely they can put more lockable dispensers up?!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 28/02/2020 10:14

DH and I were discussing last night about how people felt with WW2 - huge uncertainity, massive potential loss of life, in certain areas with bombing in the UK this was a daily thing people lived with (probably less in your face if you lived somewhere remote and rural).

This feels like we do need thrice daily briefings - morning, PM and evening. They need to go out on every single news channel and radio station and prefrably should interupt all TV even subscription services (don't see how that could happen).

These briefings need to include:
News update - number of cases, critical and deaths, UK and world summary
Travel info - eg don't fly to XYZ, if needed don't use public transport unless strirctly necessdary
Schools update
Events update - e.g. we advise not to attend events with over 100 people
Health info - reminders of what we can do, what we shouldn't do
Rationing/supplies news - as applicable, could be all shops other than those for essential supplies shut, or we have good supplies of everything shops all as normal

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:14

@peridito looks like my hospital is one of them as a girl who I know went into hospital last week for something unrelated and because she had a slight cold, they tested her. She hadn't been abroad.

justchecking1 · 28/02/2020 10:16

I would've thought Crufts could be considered slightly more risky than any other gathering with the emerging news that dogs can be affected?! 😂

AvocadoOwl · 28/02/2020 10:17

A friend of mine is an A&E nurse and I remember her telling me years ago about alcohol dependent patients drinking their hand sanitiser. Very sad the lengths addiction can push people to.

copperstrike76 · 28/02/2020 10:18

Interesting to read that Switzerland has cancelled events with 1000+ people.

DH is going to the 6 Music festival in London next weekend. I really wish he wasn't. He is going with a friend and they will get drunk, and coronavirus will be the furthest thing from their minds. I bought some sanitiser for him and he said "I'll bin that", and he has also said "It's just a flu" and "I hope I get it, because then I get a nice rest and 2 weeks in bed."

He's sort of joking but it does my head in, it really does. I'll give him the sanitiser but I am pretty sure he won't remember to use it. Meanwhile, me and DD are really careful about stuff like this (she is really great, even though she is only 7) but it's all pointless because he might not bother....

DinaCaliente · 28/02/2020 10:19

What's annoying me is the foreign office position.

Surely it's time to say only essential travel to certain areas.
Then people's insurance would pay out and they would be happier to cancel travel because of the sunken costs.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:21

I'm getting lost here.
So we have another in Wales today who has been to Italy.
We also have 2 others who have been to Iran is that right?
Do we know where the other case from yesterday was tested and what about the ones who visited Iran?

I'm furious that they aren't saying where in the country these people are! Every other country is at least saying the city/town.

NettleTea · 28/02/2020 10:22

The only 'its like flu or a cold' is that the symptoms (which are common symptoms of the body fighting off a respiratory tract infection) are similar. And its a virus.

We have been studying flu for decades. We have an immunisation programme in place. We know how it tends to peak and trough, and how it generally plays out, and IF one shows up that was different to the one everyone was immunised against there is a library of vaccinations to look for something 'close enough' to roll out if needed.

This is not the case here. We know very little about this. We dont know the incubation period, we dont know how many people are infected who are not showing symptoms, we dont know if people can become reinfected, we dont know HOW infectious it is, we dont know if it may be airbourne, we dont have a vaccine. And until its finished playing out we dont know what the rate of infection / mortality is.

AmelieTaylor · 28/02/2020 10:23

@NettleTea

Absolutely! I understand them
trying not to panic everyone & have the economy go to hell, but the ‘nothing to see here’ approach is going to get people killed, and will have the economy going into a tail spin anyway.- which was inevitable any how considering how overly reliant on China we are for goods & parts/raw materials

We had a fantastic opportunity to really limit the chances of getting it here, we are an ISLAND, & we didn’t- that decision will cost lives

The economic impact would have been huge, BUT we can’t turn the clock back now, but we could still do a lot more.

copperstrike76 · 28/02/2020 10:24

@ofwarren

It's annoying me too. I have zero faith in this government, actually.

I've been trying to stock up on hand sanitiser. We use Ecohydra because it kills norovirus and doesn't sting your hands. It's alcohol-free so I hope it will work against coronavirus too. They tweeted saying it did, but I'm not sure how they know that since it is a new virus. It's sold out virtually everywhere now, like a lot of sanitisers. I have even seen pocket-sized sanitisers being sold on Amazon and elsewhere for £20...how horribly cynical.

peridito · 28/02/2020 10:24

HasaDigaEebowai re cleaning ,I saw a clip on line of workers cleaning a subway ,men were using large tank sprayers and wearing white suits and head coverings , lines of women were cleaning an escalator wearing rubber gloves . Sad

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 10:24

I got a bit lost with the numbers too but I think that was right ofwarren. Yesterday we had two in England (one via italy and one via tenerife) and one in northern Ireland (via Italy). Today we have so far one in wales (via Italy) and two more in England (via Iran)

Whatsmyname2019 · 28/02/2020 10:25

@Number12 West Yorkshire hoping the results are negative

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 10:26

HasaDigaEebowai re cleaning ,I saw a clip on line of workers cleaning a subway, men were using large tank sprayers and wearing white suits and head coverings , lines of women were cleaning an escalator wearing rubber gloves.

And that's a typical example of something that just won't happen here unfortunately.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:28

They arent letting people make informed decisions by not saying where these cases are.
How are people to know if they have had possible contact?
Infuriating.

Emlou07 · 28/02/2020 10:28

A dog has now tested positive...

mondaynoon · 28/02/2020 10:30

I returned from northern Italy last week (not one of the lockdown places). I'm not happy at all with the way this is being dealt with by the government. The cases that are appearing in other countries, including the UK, mention that the virus was contracted in Northern Italy but don't always say where. I feel in limbo wondering whether to self-isolate or not. I'm following the government guidelines and sending the kids to school but I can't help feeling they should have told everyone returning from anywhere in Northern Italy to self-isolate.

I went on the 111 website yesterday because I had a sore throat and there was no question about whether I had returned from Italy. Just out of interest, I repeated the exercise with 'cough' and still no question about returning from Italy! Maybe I should try with fever next and see what it says.

I don't mind for myself, but would hate to spread it to others.

woodencoffeetable · 28/02/2020 10:32

A dog has now tested positive... not surprising really, considering where this virus (presumably) originated.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:35

Iran reports 143 new cases of coronavirus and 8 new deaths, raising total to 388 cases and 34 deaths t.co/eUoE2b20hL

WaterSheep · 28/02/2020 10:37

How are people to know if they have had possible contact?

Exactly. I'm all for patient confidentiality, but a rough area would help others to make more informed decisions. At this rate people are just sitting ducks, as those who are potentially contagious keep going about their daily routines.

@Watersheep but how does anyone know they're potentially contagious? It's a genuine question.
