Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

I’m from Irish heritage and my family were just as much a victim of oppression and famine as yours. I don’t need the history lesson.

I can identify with the suffering of innocent Palestinians - particularly women and children who have been used as human shields by Hamas who sheltered in their midst.
I can also identify with Israelis who have had a traumatic experience of oppression and genocide in the past and are surrounded by terrorist groups in the present.
They are a group of people who have known what it’s like to be persecuted for hundreds of years.

That's great. Good for you, I don't think anyone here would want to tell you who to identify with or why you identify with those people.

All Irish people are asking is that you don't tell them who they can identify with or why they identify with them. Just on this thread - it's because they are Catholic, it's because they identify with terrorists, why don't they identify with Sudanese people, they hate Jewish people defending themselves.

This isn't some great big conspiracy theory. Some Irish people have said how they feel but for some reason everyone seems to think that they know better than the Irish people themselves who are posting here. I don't understand why it seems so complicated for people to just listen, you dont even have to understand, just listen and stop thinking that you know how people feel/why people feel that way better than they do.

Geography isn’t your strong point is it?

Why? Scottish and Northern Irish are who I’m predominantly talking about. Occasionally Welsh people but not as often, they seem more relaxed.

It’s a thread about the Ireland game against Israel and the pressure put on the team to cancel the match.
Ireland didn’t choose to make a fuss about the cricket team playing Afghanistan.
I guess they can’t identity as fully with the oppressed and subjugated women of Afghanistan?
Not saying it’s a conspiracy- maybe Irish people just like to support the most popular cause?

Why are you “giving it back” to Irish people then?

Because some of them also do this. Relentless generalisations and accusations about ‘English people’, then throw an absolute tantrum when it’s given back. 🤷‍♀️

It’s because the UK was involved in the creation of Israel. It’s the common ‘enemy’ they’re interested in, not the plight of suffering oppressed people per se. If the UK wasn’t involved they wouldn’t be remotely interested.

I'm starting to really, really dislike Ireland and the Irish. Really, really intensely dislike them.

I'll leave you to it. You seem to know better than Irish people what the story is.

Maybe next time rather than a silent protesr Ireland should just spit at Israelis and call them racist names, it would be less controversial it seems.

You may have a different view- that doesn’t mean you know more than other posters.

@OpheliaWasntMad
I agree with pp though…if you were suggesting that the ‘Irish connection’ was the link between terrorist groups rather than empathy with a subjugated people ?

I’m in ROI and the Irish and British terrorists mostly acting in NI have been viewed extremely negatively as long as I remember (I grew up 70s and 80s). Even though people recognised that Catholics in NI were treated as second class citizens and supported them and their struggle for civil rights, the violence was not supported. The provisional IRA had small pockets of support in ROI but were broadly hated (as well as being illegal obviously).
So I’m not sure what you’re implying. That ROI generally supports the IRA and Hamas? Because you couldn’t be more wrong about that.

And @OpheliaWasntMadYes this is what irked me… that Ireland can only relate to Palestine because we both have terrorist inclinations and not because we both relate to oppression. The famine is but one part of it with many other aspects which add to the relatable oppression. I also think some will see both as freedom fighters but that would never excuse death or injury.

however, reading the rest of the thread I see I was too quick to pounce so I do apologise @OpheliaWasntMad

I think Ireland is in incredible country, I’m of Irish heritage, Catholic etc and have a lot of Irish friends/exes… I think the problem is they’re so used to feeling morally right, and being fawned over by other countries that love the charm of their music/Guinness/pubs, that they’re high on their own supply and think they can never get it wrong or be ‘on the wrong side of history’.

We are better off leaving them to it.

I'm off to check out what we are doing with that big budget surplus we have instead.

@OpheliaWasntMad Israelis shouldn't be there in the first place . Not their land . Don't think going back to the time of Moses counts . Or should Britain be still under the Romans .

Do you think land is inherently owned by the natives then? Do you agree with anti immigration groups who say the UK should only be inhabited by ‘native Brits’?

The percentages should speak for themselves. 3%. Do google how many Jews were wiped out in Poland etc in ww2. I'll give you a clue, far more than 3%. That was genocide. This wasn't, it was a conflict.

The icj? Well if they're anything like the clowns in the ICC I'll take anything they say with a pinch of salt.

Genocide involves decreasing a population ( should be obvious tbh, but here we are), not increasing it. If Israel wanted to wipe out gaza they could easily have done so.

Don't lap up everything terrorists tell you, learn from your history. Hamas/palestinian freedom fighters/ resistance whatever you wanna call them are not a good bunch nor are any of their fans.

I think the UN and the authors of the Genocide convention have a very different understanding of what the definition of Genocide is.

And yet they welcomed the Afghan Cricket team no problem. Despite what Afghanistan is doing to women and children.

What is your view on the creation of Pakistan?
Do you think US should be handed back to Native Americans?
Would you apply this policy to other countries or just Israel?

Israel wasn't created until 1948 to assuage the Western World guilt over WWII. Good intentions but no problem displacing the Palestinians that already lived there .
