Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

I would’ve liked to see Ireland utterly reject the Afghan team. I’m fairly disgusted they agreed to a fixture with no outrage. That just wouldn’t happen here.

I'd be embarrassed tbh. I wonder if some don’t understand what happened and what is happening in Afghanistan as long as the cricket is nice to watch?

C'mon now ireland where's your consistency??

Because the heritage aspect is important. My ancestors suffered famine/starvation and hardship just as yours presumably have.

I think some of those who never left Ireland think they are the only ones who suffered in the famine or during the lean years. They have a narrow view imo.
Most of us of “Irish heritage” are the direct descendants of victims of famine and hardship in Ireland. It was the often poorest who left - the wealthier could stay obviously.

I don't think anyone would say that Ireland is completely free of antisemitism, it isn't, no where is unfortunately. What people object to is the idea that Irelands focus on Palestians isn't driven by a desire to see them living free from occupation but is driven by rampant Jew hate.

As an outsider I think that the UKs support of Israel is largely driven by Muslim hate, I won't insist that that is true though and shout down every British person who wants to give their perspective. It's my perspective it doesn't make it fact.

Well I’m very happy to consider that; because I don’t think England is immune to bigotry. Nor am I wildly offended that you’ve suggested it. Are you willing to take an objective look at your own country?

That is not true at all

What are your views? I haven’t accused YOU of antisemitism. I’ve acknowledged you can support Palestinians without being antisemitic. You can certainly criticise Netanyahu and his government without being antisemitic.

But I still believe Ireland has a huge antisemitism problem. I’ve explained why.

Why do you think it?
I’m sorry, you said you’ve explained why, but I can’t find it now as the thread is getting long.
Or is it just Kneecap etc? They’re not very representative

So because the Irish had a major crop failure in 1850 they support Hamas in 2026? That’s bonkers. So many people jumping on victim bandwagons which have no relevance to their lives to justify flag waving for a ‘cause’ they have nothing to do with.

There is , sadly , far more antisemitism in the UK than you realise. It has increased exponentially recently. Jews in the UK have ten times as much chance of being attacked victim of a hate crime than Muslims do .

God, aren't many of us of irish heritage I think loads can all trace ancestors back to there.

What bothers me is a country still fraught with sectarianism <is it really true only catholics on the irish footie team?? Not very inclusive> carries on spouting bile and hate at Israel teams yet allows the taliban team in.

But I didn’t lobby to stop Ireland playing against Israel .
Its the hypocrisy and double standard I’m referring to

Gosh . Such disrespect just because someone doesn't agree with you . You can have a difference without making personal insults @AgeingMillennial . My historical is fine ,thank you . And as for calling people cunts @MrMurphysComeuppance , you really have demonstrated the irrationality of your stance .

When you have to resort to personal insults and disgusting swearwords , your arguments and opinions loses all credibility. No one cares what you think .

I have. I don't believe that Irelands support of Israel is down to rampant antisemitism. There is no evidence of this in what I see day to day as an Irish person living and working there.

This topic has come up on here again and again. There was a smear campaign against Ireland by Israel because we joined the genocide case. Irish people cannot escape this accusation, trust me it is something that we have all been made to consider over and over again.

The match itself was played in Belfast back in August, not in Ireland. Took a while for people here to suddenly decide to raise it, why's that? Where was your criticism back in August?

The Irish cricket team played against Afghanistan and not a peep …
Somehow I think that if Israel played cricket the word would have got out and there would be protests …
