Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

Do you live here?
I do, and, genuinely, that is not what I see.
I’m not being blinkered or oblivious either.

I’m not sure if it was you but someone linked an rte article upthread. Please read it. It does not show anti-semitic feeling by the majority of Irish people.

Things get screwed up online and people rush to judgment with very little knowledge of what they’re talking about.

This thread is like that. It’s upsetting to see.

I agree it’s an upsetting and polarising thread.
Im not sure it’s serving any purpose now.

The criticism is that Ireland, in their rush to be ‘anti genocide’ and ‘best pal of every oppressed person in the world’, have either inadvertently or purposefully ended up with a very high number of aggressive antisemites.

Selective anti genocide. Selectively against oppression only if Israelis are defending themselves and retaliating. Everyone else can crack on. Ah come on now The Taliban let's have some lovely cricket between pals.

We see it and they do not like it.

Yes and was called out by other Irish posters for it which was acknowledged by ophelia, they must have forgotten in their rush to throw accusations about

Never heard of you hun. Are you a brave name changer perchance?

Well you think very highly of yourselves. Which is no bad thing.
But maybe some of the criticism of Ireland is valid. When Irish posters on here say October 7 was “unfortunate” it does suggest that support of Palestine has gone too far.

I don't think that one posters words on a website can determine anything about an entire country?

Was there not a poster on this thread saying that they are starting to really, really, intensely dislike the Irish? Does that say something about the entire UK? Has your anti Irish bigotry gone too far? Is that post proof of anything other than the fact that anyone can post on the internet?

Of course it’s upsetting to see criticism of your beloved homeland but being English I’m used to it. You’re probably not used to it, because Ireland usually occupies a moral high ground and is allegedly very popular so suffers little critique in general. So it’s upsetting to you.

I think this thread is very useful. It’s important to have these discussions no matter how uncomfortable.

i don’t need to live in Ireland to see the clear problem, same as you don’t need to live in Israel or Gaza to have your views on that.

It seems to me that there is another underlying reason for the responses on this thread.

What’s that? Don’t bother saying pro colonialism mindsets, or anti Irishness. In the same way you can criticise Israel without being antisemitic, I can criticise Ireland’s antisemitism without being anti Irish.

Oh it’s serving its purpose all right. Some people are having a field day.

Funny how they never start threads about any other countries who oppose the genocide in Gaza. We all know why that is.

But you’re not interested in my views @AgeingMillennial. You’ve already made up your mind about what I think.

So unfortunately this thread isn’t as useful as you believe. Or useful at all, in fact.

Maybe because there are lots of Irish posters on here. Maybe because Ireland has an antisemitism problem. Maybe because it’s closer to the UK. All manner of reasons without resorting to accusations of anti Irishness.

And to think everyone says it’s the English that refuse to engage in introspection…

What are your views? I haven’t accused YOU of antisemitism. I’ve acknowledged you can support Palestinians without being antisemitic. You can certainly criticise Netanyahu and his government without being antisemitic.

But I still believe Ireland has a huge antisemitism problem. I’ve explained why.

Wow what a patronising post. The Irish are very used to constant criticism, jeering and ridicule don't you worry about that.

Well if you're going to attack someone it's courtesy to give some context.
I'm neither a troll nor a mod, some do struggle to debate with me they get a bit out of their depth Grin. I quite like Glorious it suits me thanks!

Anyway back to the thread Afghanistan/the taliban welcome, Israel are not seems some of the irish rules.

No, they’re not. Hence the upset here. There are a LOT of threads criticising what happens in England (contributed to by posters that are both English and not English). I don’t think I’ve ever seen any proper criticism of Ireland coming from an Irish poster, and very little from anyone else. If there are any usually they get deleted and there’s a lot of outrage.

I would’ve liked to see Ireland utterly reject the Afghan team. I’m fairly disgusted they agreed to a fixture with no outrage. That just wouldn’t happen here.

I don't think anyone would say that Ireland is completely free of antisemitism, it isn't, no where is unfortunately. What people object to is the idea that Irelands focus on Palestians isn't driven by a desire to see them living free from occupation but is driven by rampant Jew hate.

As an outsider I think that the UKs support of Israel is largely driven by Muslim hate, I won't insist that that is true though and shout down every British person who wants to give their perspective. It's my perspective it doesn't make it fact.

Because the heritage aspect is important. My ancestors suffered famine/starvation and hardship just as yours presumably have.
