Have Hamas seen sense and realised there is little hope for their death cult? Is this is a significant moment towards peace?

Ignoring all the usual claptrap about Palestinians, this is in the ipaper:

“Statements to media from Israeli and Hamas officials indicates there is already disagreement about the exact conditions of the proposal.
“Israel demands the complete disarmament of Hamas, including the removal of weapons from Gaza and the complete demilitarisation of the Strip as a precondition for any process,” one Israeli official told Reuters.
They added Israel had voiced “objections” to the plan, amid concerns it did not offer enough guarantees.
Hamas’s seems to have a different grasp of the agreement, interpreting that its demilitarisation is conditional on Israel leaving the territory first.
Ghazi Hamad, a member of the Hamas negotiating team, told Al Jazeera: “We will not take any action regarding disarmament prior to Israel’s withdrawal from the Strip.”
US officials seem to be aware of the precarity of the deal, with one telling reporters last night that Israel was “very sceptical that Hamas will disarm”.
It is also unclear if Israel will abide by the terms of the agreement, given its vocal objections and very recent attacks on Gaza, despite the supposed ceasefire since October.
On Thursday alone, Israeli strikes killed at least six Palestinians, including two children, according to local medics.”
“Trump first proposed the board last September when he announced his plan to end Israel’s war in Gaza.
He later said the board’s remit would be expanded beyond Gaza to tackle other conflicts worldwide, with Trump as its chair. Such efforts have traditionally been the role of the United Nations.
Member states would be limited to three-year terms unless they pay $1bn each to fund the board’s activities and earn permanent membership, its charter said.
The White House in January named US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner as members of the initiative’s founding Executive Board.
Critics pointed out that the board does not feature any Palestinian representatives, even though it was create to administrate over the fate of Gaza.”

I hope that this is a step forward, however I imagine both sides won’t comply with some aspect and round and round they go again.

You may be right but I tend to agree with @Martymcfly24 on this and feel like at least it seems like a step forward so take it as a positive.

A cautious positive but still.

Senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad confirmed to CNN that Hamas has reached an agreement with the Board of Peace to relinquish its weapons, contingent on the deployment of an International Stabilization Force to Gaza and Israel upholding its obligations under the October ceasefire agreement.
“The agreement is a package,” Hamad said. “We will not begin any weapons-related steps until Israel implements these commitments. Frankly, if Israel does not implement them, we will not proceed.”
Hamad said Israel must first cease fire, stop all targeted killings in Gaza, withdraw its troops to the Yellow Line and allow for a surge of humanitarian aid consistent with the October ceasefire agreement. The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a Palestinian technocratic committee appointed by the Board of Peace, must also enter Gaza and take over governance of the strip.
The NCAG will assume control of weapons belonging to Hamas’s police force in Gaza, Hamad said.
Hamad was adamant that Hamas’s heavy weapons will not be decommissioned or destroyed, but instead “stored under the National Committee’s supervision.”
But Hamad reiterated that none of this will happen if Israel does not implement its obligations.
“Our experience with the first phase was very bad. Israel did not abide by the agreement and there were hundreds or thousands of violations. Now it is a challenge for the guarantors — the United States, Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt — to ensure 100% that Israel will fully honor and implement all items of the agreement,” Hamad said. “I hope Israel will approve it — we are still waiting.”

Seems the usual 'if you don't do X then we won't disarm' looks like this is going nowhere then.

I’m interested in the point about the funding. How will the Palestinians cope if it’s reduced? Their population has grown incredibly fast with women having some of the highest birth rates on the planet and they are very dependent on outside funding. Is it likely they’ll get more financial help if Hamas disarm?
They need to rebuild. But how to help without the aid being diverted to militants? Seems hopeless.

“Hamas stands for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, the “Islamic Resistance Movement”. Armed resistance is “at the heart” of this, according to its 2017 charter “the strategic choice for protecting… the rights of the Palestinian people”. Now, much weakened, Hamas have taken what one Palestinian official described as the most consequential decision in their history, to abandon the armed struggle.
Under terms of the deal, they will hand over all their weapons to the committee of Palestinian technocrats set up to run Gaza under Trump’s peace plan. “Even before Trump announced the deal, the far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, attacked it. In a post on X, he said: “The only solution in Gaza to which Israel is willing to be a partner is encouraging emigration and destroying Hamas.” He added: “You only talk with Nazis through the crosshairs – and no other way.”
A senior White House official responded to all this by saying that President Trump would be “very disappointed” if Netanyahu did anything to obstruct the Gaza peace deal. The Israeli Prime Minister is, however, faced with a closely contested elections in October. Facing down a US president and spurning Hamas may be his ticket to victory.”

You’re right, Hamas has never been interested in peace. They only want war and to wipe their neighbours Israel off the map. But that’s the rogue, genocidal terrorist organisation that it is. The planning of October 7th took over 2 years! Let that sink in, 2 years to plan a mass terrorist attack. They knew the result of that would be war in which many innocents would die, but they didn't care. Hamas leaders happily sat on their millions in accounts in other countries use the people as pawns. It's incredibly sad. It's a shame that Hamas don't put their weapons done and attempt to live alongside their neighbours who don't want to be wiped out.

Hamas dissolved their government in early July so gradually they are losing control. Although, any checking to see if new government contains old Hamas officials?

Five Hamas weapon depots were destroyed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip overnight, the military and Shin Bet announce.

The IDF says the sites were used by Hamas to store assault rifles, explosive devices, anti-tank launchers and other military equipment.

One of the weapon depots was located adjacent to Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, according to the military.

“This is another example of Hamas’ systematic use of and embedding within civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities, to plan and carry out terrorist activities,” the army says.

The military justifies the strikes amid the ceasefire by saying that Hamas intended to use the weapons in attacks on Israeli forces in Gaza and Israeli civilians. The weapon depots were “destroyed to remove the threat,” the IDF adds.

My first reaction to hearing this was "Yeah, right!" with an eyeroll. Of course they won't disarm. They just lie and lie and lie!

That would be great but, unfortunately, Hamas have zero credibility - they lie and lie and lie. Its a nasty organization bent on achieving their goal - the destruction of Israel at any cost - and they dont give a fuck about ordinary Palestinians dying in the process.

Way to gloss over what happened on the 7th of October...

Exactly ... "Palestine has a right to defend itself" - no, Hamas did not have the right to kill at least 1,200 people—mostly civilians—and abduct 251 hostages.

Hamas did not have the right to inflict the torture, rape, and the murder of babies, children, and elderly victims across 20 communities, the Nova music festival and military installations.

And people choosing to ignore the huge role that Hamas play in the Gaza war have no right to lecture others on their "humanity".

October 7th wasn't self-defense.
