Are you denying the economic crisis in Iran, Red? If not then I fail to see why you insist on minimising the real hardship of living there by pretending it's just about the price of onions.

As of March 2025, Iranian news outlets have estimated that anywhere from 22% to 50% of Iranians are currently living under the poverty line — a stark increase from 2022. A systemic energy crisis has consistently plagued the country for years, with the issue reaching a climax alongside the rapid economic decline.

In April 2026, reports emerged that the rial experienced a 15% drop in two days, bringing the rate to anywhere between 1,760,000 and 1,810,000 rials to the U.S. dollar. Additionally, the Central Bank of Iran reported a 65.8% year-on-year inflation rate.

By May 2026, the situation became so dire that certain products began experiencing up to 100% price increases in just one week. Many workers found themselves unable to afford simple foodstuffs, such as bread. Female workers were especially impacted.

Deepening poverty is driving more Iranian and Afghan migrant children into labor, leaving them exposed to exploitation, violence, and malnutrition, in criminal networks.

On the price of onions. There's a difference between war time and peace time. Iran is at war so CPI is less important to Iranians than their own security. Who cares if an onion costs $1k when you're dead.

Given that Iran has extensive land borders and a Caspian Sea outlet, the US cannot starve it into submission before Trump's term ends. Israel and US throwing around GDP is therefore immaterial propaganda to the war at hand.

Twiglets1 · 13/08/2026 07:29

It’s not about the price of onions there’s an economic crisis in Iran. There was one before the war which was a major factor in the January 2026 protests … things have got much worse since then. Which is going to impact on how Iranians feel about the way their country is being run and could lead to an eventual overthrow of the current regime.

If a "cost of living crisis" is supposed to bring down a government and lead to a totally new Government system, then I have more questions about that than there is space on this thread.

Historically, such a scenario and the resulting revolution has not worked out well for Capitalists.

And as we are talking about Iran, a religious theocracy, the question has to be asked if there is any correlation between poverty and uptake of religion?

But I am sure Trump knows all this stuff.

Or maybe he is just angry at the moment because he was found out to have been caught hiding in an airline food truck to switch planes.

trumpredcard · 13/08/2026 07:50

For examples of where the price of onions didn't bring down an authoritarian government just look at Korea and China. Many people ate grass and many starved to death. In an authoritarian theocracy, Zero chance. It's wishful thinking and an extremely lazy attempt at 360 degree analysis. Or hubris. Most likely the latter.

Twiglets1 · 13/08/2026 08:14

Ah well I knew talking about what the regime has done to the Iranian economy wouldn’t go down well with Red and trumpred.

Others may find it relevant to the thread or maybe the relevance will be clear further down the line.

With China the people eating grass (and mud) was down to the same government that is in power now. Between 15-60 million died ( I think 45 mil is the most accepted). And the guy that caused it is still on the money. And his "thought" is still enshrined in the constitution.

So yup, the price of onions is not a good gauge of an authoritarians power. Especially in this case where the population have been taught that the US is the great Satan.

If you could give at least one example to support your theory I would be ready to revise my opinion.

How about Starmer and the UK cost of living crisis ? I think that would partially qualify ?

What theory are you talking about?

It’s hardly a theory that the Iranian economy is in crisis, it is measurable in lots of ways already outlined. Also hardly a theory that economic hardship can lead to discontent & uprisings which the regime are already concerned about.

Twiglets1 · 13/08/2026 08:53

Can the UK & Starmer be compared to Iran & the IRGC 😂

Are you able to explain what you find funny about the Iranian economy being in crisis? Or economic hardship leading to uprisings like the ones we saw in January when tens of thousands of Iranians were murdered for protesting?

Twiglets1 · 13/08/2026 10:08

More than 30 nations, including France, Britain and Canada, have condemned Iran's use of capital punishment, saying, in a joint statement on Wednesday, August 13, that the Islamic Republic of Iran was executing protesters to "silence dissent."

After the initial 26 countries and the EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, other countries joined this declaration, bringing the number of signatories to 32. Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Germany and numerous other European nations were among those calling for Iran "to immediately end the use of the death penalty and release all those arbitrarily detained."

Pakistani government sources told Turkish news agency Anadolu on Wednesday that the US and Iran have agreed to extend the 60 day ceasefire under the Memorandum of Understanding. It is set to expire on August 17th.

"Both sides have conveyed their consent to the mediators to extend the deadline," a source close to the mediation process said.

"However, the two sides are exchanging messages to decide on the extension period," the source added.

This in PRC state media today. A new oil pipe.

In the East, so not for Gulf oil ?

I have no idea.

Major oil pipeline starts operation in East China, capable of pumping up to 70,000 tons of crude oil each day - Global Times

China produces over 4.5 million bbd of crude (in adddition to petroleum liquids) that have to be transported downstream then to retailers. I wonder if the pipeline has valves so different products can use the same pipelines, together, or separately.

As I said, no idea.

But I have mentioned before how the PRC uses it's state media. If a claim is made, such as " China is low on oil", they often reply in State media in an indirect way. It's propaganda yes. But a sort of reminder to the State Dept. Hey, remember this ?

Looks like things are pretty bad for the US navy too at the moment. From the Telegraph:

“US sailors onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have attempted to jump overboard amid a growing mental health crisis during their ninth months at sea.
The aircraft carrier, deployed to the Middle East as part of the Iran war, has reached a record-breaking deployment of 250 days at sea.
There have been complaints about lavatories, showers, food and burnout from sailors who have not stepped on dry land this year.
As conditions worsen, military families have warned that the 5,000 sailors onboard have reached a breaking point, with sailors attempting to jump overboard in an attempt to end their lives as the war drags on.”

I would pinch of salt with that article. They can do crew changes while on deployment.

This is what the net gave me:

The Hindustan times? But what about the bad things the Indian government have done?
