From that article. Quote "““According to Tehran, there have been no direct negotiations with the U.S. since April, although both sides concede that messages have been passed through regional mediators."

"Concede" is a strange word to use there. "Confirm" would be a better word I think. After all, I recall it was agreed (at some point) that they would us mediators.

I don't think it is a strange word in the context of Iran wanting to portray that they are not negotiating with the US.

They have done this before - been vehement that they are not negotiating with the US when it later emerged that they were, but indirectly via mediators. I don't know why they want to hide that negotiations are going ahead but for some reason they do - maybe to look tougher?

Iran’s president denies threatening to resign during talks over strait of Hormuz

Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s president, has been forced to deny claims that he has repeatedly threatened to resign as he battles hardline factions opposed to reaching a settlement with the US over the strait of Hormuz.

The US and Europe hope a deal is imminent to reopen the strait and they are putting pressure on Oman to accept a temporary agreement that officials in Muscat fear will leave Iran retaining near permanent dominance of the vital oil shipping channel. Ships would enter the strait in a route close to Iran, but leave on a route that passes through Iranian and Omani waters.

But far from being feted over an imminent diplomatic victory, Pezeshkian was instead forced to deny that he had repeatedly offered to resign, verbally and in writing, during a television interview marking his second anniversary in the job.

The resignation claims, which have been front page news in Iran, were made by Mohammad Bagher Kharazi, who is linked by marriage to Mojtaba Khamenei, the new supreme leader.

... the row has highlighted the deep strategic and tactical differences inside Iran over the wisdom of talks with the US.

So currently we seem to be at the stage of diplomatic talks going on again in order to get the SoH open. Well, according to Donny, but Iran says only with Oman. If these don’t work then Trump is going to hit Iran very hard. One has to wonder what with? According to the Telegraph:

“The United States has reportedly used up “virtually all” of its stockpile of missiles in five months of war with Iran.
The affected weapons are understood to be the army’s highly accurate surface-to-surface munitions, known as Army Tactical Missile Systems (Atacms) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM). The US has used “virtually all” of these, according to two sources who spoke to Reuters.
There has been speculation about the severity of the shortfall for some time, with an official warning last month that the US military did not have enough for a return to “all-out war”. The latest reports will raise eyebrows across Washington, though the sources declined to say how many of each munition the US had left.
Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran with devastating strikes, only to call them off at the last-minute.”

It’s a shit show all right.

My view is that talks are going on in the background via mediators. Both sides need the war to end. Iran is therefore strickly correct when saying that they are not in talks with the US, because they're not directly communicating with them, but making their own demands known via the proxy of a mediator.

Trump, on the other hand, is keen for his base to believe that the US has strong-armed Iran to the negotiating table, so his pov is that Iran wants to make a deal and is negotiating to this end. It's as convenient for him to omit mentioning mediators as it is for Iran.

Neither party is wrong, just pushing their own propaganda to their bases.

According to "sources" the reliability of which we know nothing about. It may be true, it may not be. It may be a fake message the US want to spread to Iran, or it may be something they don't want spread. Who knows?

Strictly correct but also disingenuous. Trump didn't say the talks are taking place "via mediators" but neither did Iran.

People would think Trump was making the talks up had Qatar not confirmed that drafts of the potential US-Iran agreement are being circulated.

People would think Trump was making the talks up

Why would people think this when it is entirely possible for this to be happening in the background. Jaw, jaw not war, war has been known to be an effective way to manage geopolitics for centuries.

People do think that Trump makes things up so why not the talks?

Though others on the thread have reported the Iran denial that negotiations are taking place with the US, I've been the only one to point out that Iran did previously deny that they were in negotiations with the US but it turned out they were - just indirectly via intermediaries.

Yes, but what with? I have read carpet bombing being touted in the AP. Which is going to mean a lot of dead people. Surely a very bad option.

He appears to be unable to tell the truth. It's as if he was taught it as a child.

Yesterday on another thread, I done a post about a series of TRUTHS he posted a few days ago. Minutes apart. Just mundane political endorsements. Cut and paste but change the name. He posted the 3 years he won Florida. Next Truth the same. Next Truth, now he WON FLORIDA 6 times.

First truth was fine. Second fine. Third truth, nah... lets double it from 3 to 6.

It's as if he has a truth blocker built into him.

Yeah. I am just saying that he has embellished it again. We are doing the cycle. From " the end of a civilization", to "actually they are nice people and we get on well". He seems to cycle like a tan function graph. Up, up up... and cut, Start again.

Lets see what Trump said about the talks on Monday.

QUESTION 00:14:23-00:14:27 (4 SEC)
Mr. President, are the talks with Iran now off and are airstrikes --

DONALD TRUMP 00:14:27-00:14:48 (21 SEC)
No, they're on. They're going on right now. It's an amazing thing; we have a little problem with Iran because we have many talks and we'll say we have or we don't have. You know, we're straight about it, but they deny it, but they're not denying it now. They just put out a statement not denying it. But for some reason, they -- uh, when they're talking, they don't like saying that they're talking.

So I say, we're in talks, big deal, we're in talks. And they'll sometimes deny it, even though they spend hours and hours together talking. No, the talks are going along. We're going to hit them very hard yesterday, very, very hard, harder than any attack, I think I can say, General, from a point of knowledge, any attack since World War II. That's pretty big.

And we were set to go and they called and in addition, Saudi Arabia called and, uh, UAE called. Qatar called, got calls from numerous people, not I don't want to use the word begging, but some some were. In particular, Iran did not want to be hit. And they said, we want to talk; we want to talk about the strait.

But more importantly, from my standpoint, we want to talk about the denuclearization of Iran, because that's what it's all about. This is why I'm doing this. And it should have been done it's now 50 years. We keep saying 47 years, but three years have gone by. But it's for 50 years that other presidents should have been doing what I or other countries.

Didn't have to be us, but other countries, and nobody did it, and it was time. And we hit them hard with the B2s more than a year ago now, and that knocked out their capability, their potential capability. Uh, and, uh, we've done a great job. But when we talk, we say we're talking. If we're not talking, when you ask me, no, we're not talking, I'll say it, but we are talking.

Right now, we're talking and we're talking at the request of Iran, backed by Saudi Arabia, backed by UAE and backed by Qatar, in particular, but others also. Many many countries called, many the leaders of -- I'm friendly with a lot of them, almost all of them, one way or the other, and they all wanted to give this a last chance.

This is a last chance. This is not something that if it doesn't happen -- this is a last chance for them to sign a good document. Yeah, please.

There is a difference between 'people' and 'some people'.

trumpredcard · 05/08/2026 13:20

Now let's see what has the US been up to while they are in 'talks' with Iran.

Taxi driver and his family killed by one of Trump’s biggest bombs
Iranian couple and toddler die after 2,000lb explosive is dropped on their home miles from any military site.

The 2,000lb Mark 84 is the sixth-heaviest bomb in the US arsenal.
Nicknamed “Hammer” for its destructive capabilities, the bomb was used extensively in Vietnam and Iraq and for targeted assassinations, including the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in 2024.
It can penetrate concrete and form craters 50ft wide and 36ft deep, instantly killing anyone in its wide blast radius.
On Thursday morning, it was dropped on Qeysar Jafari’s modest house on Qeshm island, where his wife slept alongside him, cradling their two-year-old son.
In a flash of light, all three were killed instantly.
US Central Command (Centcom) insisted it did not target civilians, but failed to explain why a home around 25 miles from the nearest military site was struck, and why such a heavy bomb was used.

Hours before the bomb came down at 3.40am, Donald Trump had vowed to hit Iran “very hard”.
...

Neighbours kept asking the same question: why here?
There is no military base, antenna, or government building near the house – a residential quarter for people who make their living from the sea or from taxis.
...
About 20 homes were left uninhabitable, cars and buildings damaged up to 60m away, and pieces of the Jafaris’ home – a sofa and an air-conditioner motor – were flung as far as 600m.
The bomb that killed the Jafaris fell during the strange, grinding phase of a war that has already remade Iran.
When the bombs returned last month after the ceasefire collapsed, they fell on the far south – on Hormozgan and Sistan and Baluchistan, among Iran’s poorest and most neglected corners.
The US pounded the bridges, ports, power lines and, sometimes, the homes in a region that had little to do with the country’s nuclear programme or its missiles.

On Trump lying ?

I think there another word for people who think Trump does not lie.

And if we take those deluded people out of the equation, we are left with most people who are debating, or wondering, what% of what he says are lies.

Going by the extensive evidence I have seen, I am firmly in the 80% + camp. Although what camp one is in does depend on how one weights his lies. When he says, "Chyna pays the tariffs" , is that cancelled out if he says, "today is Tuesday", on a Tuesday? I don't think so.

Those people who think Trump does not lie are not worth mentioning on this thread where we all acknowledge that Trump lies.

People or Some people basically the same, both plural and pointing to some of the population not the whole population (that would be "everyone").

However, in this case Trump was not lying about talks going ahead, albeit indirectly, as has already been covered. He was telling a partial truth in not mentioning the talks were between mediators not directly with the US. Iran was also telling a partial truth in saying they were not talking to the US, but not mentioning the mediators.

So when should you use people, persons and peoples? Outside of a legal context and certain set phrases such as missing persons bureau, it is always correct to use people as the plural of person. Persons, while not necessarily incorrect, can be perceived as either overly formal or slightly affected. As for peoples, it should only be used when referring to multiple ethnic, religious, cultural or national groups.

Twiglets1 · 05/08/2026 14:38

Most of the time, people is the correct word to choose as a plural for person. Persons is archaic, and it is safe to avoid using it, except in legal writing, which has its own traditional language. Peoples is only necessary when you refer to distinct ethnic groups (for example, within the same region).

Rich white landowners only apparently. That does appear to be how Trump defines American people.

"We the people of the United States" was used correctly. As Grammarly says, people is the correct word to choose as a plural for person.
