Hang on though. There was plenty in CNN about the funeral. And remember, Iran is an authoritarian state. They could have had 50 million at the funeral. That does not mean 50 million wanted to be there. Big numbers are a feature of authoritarian states.

Look at Trump. He tries to emulate that. And fails miserably.

I don't follow CNN at all and I probably don't check anywhere near as many MSM as most of you on here do. My own impression, from checking a much smaller number of sources, was that the coverage was very small relative to the obviously very large event. I do take your point re authoritarian states but I do also think the size of the funeral (at least 10 million) also shows the fact that a lot of the population has been mobilised in support of the IRGC because of the US and Israeli attacks. Far from causing the regime to fall (see US initial aim, now dropped entirely), it has had the opposite effect at present.

KeeperOfTheSevenKeys · 22/07/2026 13:07

There was plenty of coverage of the funeral. And no one says all Iranians hate the IRGC. Plenty unfortunately don't. And many of those who do probably pretend they don't, for their own safety.

I don't agree with you. The general MSM narrative has been that Iranians hate the IRGC and are all protesting in the streets against them.
The US and Israel starting a war on Iran has actually drawn Iranians towards the IRGC in a wave of nationalism, rather than toppled it, as the US were proposing initially. The initially US (alleged) objective, which many people were talking about on MN, to help the poor Iranian people, has also been entirely forgotten. Now it is all about bombing bridges and power stations or bombing them back to the stone age. No suprise!

Which mainstream news outlet has reported that all Iranians hate the IRGC?

Thanks, I haven't watch this weeks interview yet.

Fun fact - Nima the host is Iranian (who lives in Brazil) and was actually visiting Iran when the unprovoked aggression started on the 28th February.

Jacques Baud is a treasure and also a Veteran, I have some of his books on my reading list. Unfortunately the EU has sanctioned him and frozen his bank accounts as he has accurately been reporting on the Ukraine conflict.

Perhaps one day we'll be allowed to have intelligent, experienced people in positions of power.

Thanks. I knew that he was an Iranian living in Brazil but did not know that he was in Iran when the atrocities started.
I'm a fan of JB too and think that the EU's treatment of him is appalling. So much for libertarianism in the West. It all seems to be over nowadays and I think it will get much worse. What is happening in Russia/Ukraine is as potentially worrying as what is going on in Iran, but not a topic for this thead!

As I've said on this board and others, apart from mindless killing and destruction which I remain 100% against, the Iran conflict has the potential to cause a worldwide depression and famine in some areas.

Unfortunately, Donald isn't mentally altogether.

Robert Barnes a former Trump lawyer and others have spoken about his mental decline and confabulation, a type of memory disruption that leads to inaccurate, distorted, or even fabricated memories(e.g. negotiating with an Iranian that wants a deal).

Sadly, watching the Military movement in the region, there will likely be a big maneuver against Iran in the next 72 hours and Iran will respond accordingly.

In terms of negotiations, Trump’s actions have closed that path. Looking at Iranians in Iran, they're increasingly carrying the red flag of revenge, they don't want to negotiate, even Pezeskhian was booed during Khamenei's funeral. Remember the revolution against the Shah was started by students, who also stormed the American embassy and took hostages.

There's that same air in Iran today especially in the young. By their actions (bombing schools, hospitals and infrastructure) all Trump and Netanyahu did was "prove" that the hardliners were right about the West being evil and ensured that any Iranian official that signs a deal right now would be in danger.

I agree that a major escalation looks likely. I fear all the consequences of this escalation.
I also agree that the US/Israel have caused Iranians to rally around their flag (just said so in response to earlier posts!).
I also agree with Barnes re Trump's mental decline. There has always been a huge element of dishonesty when it comes to Trump though. He is, in my opinion, a malignant narcissist and a psychopath. He obviously had a terrible upbringing. I don't altogether trust Barnes nor his judgement for various reasons, but he certainly has some interesting 'insider' information.

Trump yesterday.

We are talking to them. I think they’re being serious. I think … they are being by far the most serious that we’ve seen them, but that doesn’t mean we get there,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday.
He added: “We’re locked and loaded. We’re ready to go.”

Agree with you regarding Barnes, I unfollowed him, Rich Baris and Viva Frei soon after this whole thing kicked off in 2023. All 3 of them either actively defended the violence of what was happening in Gaza or stayed silent enabling it to continue. The only reason that they've become critical lately is

  1. Other people spoke out first and took the bullets and the tide has largely turned against Israel in MAGA.
  2. They were accused of being anti Israel for small criticisms.
  3. The midterms, the Democrats are currently on track to take power next January and are much more effective at passing laws that will not be favourable to Republicans.

Barnes is here representing his backers to sell JD Vance as the one to save the "MAGA" coalition, he's working us but is currently useful due to his contacts in the Whitehouse.

In your post answering me on the same subject directly above, you said " I don't follow CNN at all and I probably don't check anywhere near as many MSM as most of you on here do."

And here you are saying "The general MSM narrative has been that Iranians hate the IRGC and are all protesting in the streets against them."

I live in a place with limited internet freedom. It is ranked around the same level as pre-war Iran on indexes I have seen. But that was a while back because those sites tend to be banned. I do not use a VPN.

CNN, Sky, CBS and a handful of other sites is all I have. And the funeral was well reported, and nor am I seeing anything about Iranians protesting. (not since the big protests pre war). All western social media alternative news sites are banned.

Yet I am seeing what you have not seen and not seeing what you say you have seen. Yes, I have censored internet, but I have not seen any complaints from other posters about what I post here being factually wrong that would lead me to believe the international news I can access is factually misleading me.

So yup, I respectfully say that maybe you should have a look at CNN and UK Sky now and then. They both have good feeds on the war. So far as I can make out. But happy to be corrected on that.

They do have "analysis" on their feeds. But that is just what it says on the tin. Speculation on what might be happening. And it is made clear that is what it is, So the reader can agree or disagree. Analysis is not reported as fact.

I am a big defender of the free press by the way. What I am disappointed with is the way CNN are sanitizing some of what Trump TRUTHS out. But Sky tends to screenshot his TRUTHS. So, by having both feeds one does seem to get a fairly good picture.

I find most of his TRUTHS and interviews can be broken down into

Part 1. Factually untrue claim.
Part 2. Contradict first claim.
Part 3. Exaggerate first claim.

Or variations of.

I should have been clearer when I said this 'The general MSM narrative has been that Iranians hate the IRGC and are all protesting in the streets against them'.
I was referring to the protesting in the streets at the start of the war and the MSM narrative at this time. This has been far less preponderant recently for obvious reasons.

I've just had a quick look at some CNN headlines onlines and they do appear to be more balanced than the UK MSM sources that I generally look at briefly. As a Brit, I use the US sources less. Sky news is not one I like. It has tended to be hugely anti Iran and pro Israel. The interviewers can be very unpleasant to guests who aren't 'on the right side'.

Do you live in China? You don't need to answer obviously.

No it wasn't.

You are the one being black and white here - the same insult you aim at me when I disagree with you - couldn't you think of an original insult for @KeeperOfTheSevenKeys instead of recycling the old one?

You say that you "don't follow CNN at all and I probably don't check anywhere near as many MSM as most of you on here do".

Yet you also say that "The general MSM narrative has been that Iranians hate the IRGC and are all protesting in the streets against them".

Maybe widen the mainstream media sources you use if you genuinely think the messaging was that all Iranians hate the IRGC.

While reporting on the protests the media was of course focusing on those who wanted to protest against the regime. However, the funeral was also widely covered and it is obvious that not all Iranians hate the IRGC. They are a country of about 93 million people so it's not surprising if they don't all think the same way.

It's objectively untrue to say that mainstream media messaging was that all Iranians hate the IRGC and you would know this if - and you say you are a Brit - you read the most obvious mainstream source which is the BBC.

From the BBC.
Iran says it has carried out drone strikes on US military facilities and bases across the Middle East in retaliation for the 13th consecutive night of American attacks on the country.
Explosions were reported along Iran's Gulf coast, and in western, northern and central areas. Four people were killed and five injured in an attack in the south-west, Iranian state media said.
Iran later announced strikes on US-allied Kuwait, while sirens sounded in Bahrain and Jordan, and flights were suspended at a major Iraqi airport after a reported drone crash.
It comes as Iran condemned the US plan to use frozen Iranian assets to pay for war damages, in a sign of further escalation between the two countries.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump said damages to ships and cargo in the Strait of Hormuz would be paid for by "Iranian Money that the United States has in its possession, and controls".
"These damages may be very substantial but, nevertheless, this is the fair and equitable thing to do," he posted on his Truth Social platform.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by saying that seizing another country's assets to "pay for unrelated future claims is an incendiary precedent".
"Ensuing chaos will not be pretty or peaceful," he added.

Is this even legal?

@rainingsnoring Yup the independent media is really invaluable. They're what the old MSM used to be and engage in actual fearless journalism. That's why their engagement continues to grow and traditional media is in decline both in readership and trust https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgq1py92eko

Unfortunately to advance within the official system you have toe the line and compromise. Professor John Mearsheimer has spoken about how he's no longer invited onto the MSM, likely because his analysis doesn't fit the narrative.

It also returns to what we discussed the other day about supremacism and exceptionalism, a lot of people in the West don't actually realise how "propagandized" they are. Noam Chomsky wrote about it his book manufacturing consent.
