Kuwait suffered attacks on civilian infrastructure at an international airport and a power and water desalination plant. From Al Jazeera:

Kuwait Airways has informed passengers that takeoff and landing operations at Kuwait International Airport have been temporarily suspended following the latest rounds of Iranian attacks.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has said that a fire broke out in one of the components of a power and water desalination plant after the latest round of Iranian attacks.

“This necessitated precautionary operational measures, consisting of disconnecting a number of generating units to preserve the safety of the plant and its workers, and to ensure the stability of the electrical grid,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The Ministry confirms that all operational and emergency plans were activated immediately upon the occurrence of the incident, ensuring the continuity and stability of both the electricity and water networks and limiting any potential impact on service, with technical and operational monitoring continuing around the clock,” it added in the statement.

From the same source:

The US attack that hit water desalination pumps in the coastal Bunji village, in Iran’s Jask county, has “completely disrupted the supply of drinking water to 20 villages with a population of approximately 10,000 people”, Hamzeh Pour, the CEO of the Hormozgan Water and Wastewater Company, was quoted as saying by Tasnim.

Pour referred to the US strikes as “a series of crimes and terrorist attacks”, wherein a pumping station for extracting water from the sea and a power transformer at the Bunji desalination plant were “completely destroyed”.

“These villages are facing a severe water shortage,” he added.

Bahrain says it intercepted several Iranian aerial attacks

Bahrain has said its defence forces have intercepted and destroyed several Iranian aerial attacks.

“The General Command affirms that all its weapons systems and units are at the highest level of readiness and remain fully prepared to defend the Kingdom,” the defence forces said in a statement.

It also stressed that “the deliberate use of missiles and drones to target civilians and private property constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law”.

Iran’s rial hits new low as dollar nears 1.92 million

The US dollar reached a record 1,918,000 rials on Iran’s open market Friday, surpassing its previous high as war, inflation and worsening economic prospects continued to weaken the currency.

The previous record was 1,900,000 rials, registered on May 4. Other foreign currencies also rose. The British pound reached 2,576,500 rials, while the euro climbed above 2,190,000 rials.

At Friday’s open-market rate, Iran’s official monthly minimum wage of 166,255,500 rials is worth about $87.

The new low follows a sharp deterioration in Iran’s economic outlook. The International Monetary Fund expects the economy to contract by 6.1% in 2026, after previously forecasting modest growth.

Average inflation is projected to reach 68.9%, leaving households with fewer opportunities to earn money while the value of their income falls rapidly.

The IMF linked the downturn to damage to energy and transport infrastructure, lower production and exports, and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.

It reminds me of the issues where Trump used music for his rallies etc and the artist asked him not to do so. He ignored them and continued to use the music anyway. I guess Kid Rock didn't have any good songs.🤔

Anthropic is the AI company. I recall the Pentagon stopped payments and Trump tired to destroy the company. But still in court I think.

trumpredcard · 18/07/2026 10:23

I would be surprised if it was Anthropic used for the Minab school attack as they're very of the minute. Or maybe the US just looked at old images punched in gps targetting?

As part of the wider Iran War happenings, Kalshi has multiple trades open with only 43% thinking the Strait of Hormuz will open before 1Jan 2027.

Polymarket has over $184 M in trades on 114 active markets, and ethics aside, you can probably bet on which country Iran will hit next.

Some people somewhere will be making a lot of $$$, so there's a powerful incentive for insider trading if you're willing to accept the risk for the reward. Especially as only the 'little people' get arrested for it in the US.

In its fourth strike on water infrastructure, the US has destroyed two water tanks in Sirik, Iran, completely cutting off water distribution in all villages of the Bemani district and the city of Kohstak, the Hormozgan Water and Sanitation Authority says.

Iran has hit vital oil sector facilities, the Kuwait Petroleum Company says.

That’s an escalation from those attempting transit.

I really can't see what advantage this gives the US.

I am convinced this is just about money for Trump now. He has had to pay back 80 billion in tariffs to US importers, there is no mad rush to develop VZ oil, and he wants a 1.5 trillion defense budget next year.

I think high oil prices are his only way now, in his mind anyway. He is also pissed at Iran because they won't agree to give him a cut of any tolls. And the potential numbers for that are staggering.

This from the Guardian indicating the lack of Iranian expertise in the Trumps administration

The potential for miscalculation is heightened by the absence of Iran specialists in Trump’s administration.

Swanson – who has said he was forced out of his state departmentpost after a critical tweet from the rightwing influencer, Laura Loomer – blamed the deficiency on Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, who he said had “physically removed” key personnel.

“I’m struck by some of the leaks that have come out about decision-making in this war, where Rubio is reportedly skeptical about the regime change aims that the Israelis propose to Trump, but then says nothing,” said Swanson, now with the Atlantic Council. “He’s basically neutralized the [state] department, then stays quiet [but] privately tries to clear his name in the aftermath.”

Instead of seasoned Iran specialists, Trump has relied on his tried-and-trusted negotiating team – namely
Steve Witkoff, his chief envoy, Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, and latterly,
Vance, who opposed the initial decision to go to war and was a key figure in negotiating the MoU.

“That is how he fundamentally misunderstood his adversary,” said Alex Vatanka, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington DC.
“Expertise would have come handy for the president, to actually listen to folks who’ve watched this Iranian system, and would have told him ‘They’re not businessmen from New York. They’re made of a different type of DNA.’

“Trump now has an adversary that is willing to suffer a lot more than he thought. They are willing to risk on playing the strait of Hormuz card because it puts them in charge of so much of the global energy supply and turns some of the wealthiest countries in the Gulf into their hostages.”

Iran’s readiness to gamble could drive Trump to further raise the stakes, making further escalation – including a ground invasion – more likely.

@DrPrunesqualer

I know next to nothing about the Iranian system, but I do know a bit about how authoritarian governments work. And I am getting the strong impression that the question " If I do this, what will they do ?" is not being asked. I am sure people told him anyway, but those people appear to be gone now. As your article says.

And the Irony is of course, that Trump himself is being an authoritarian, but he is really bad at it.

He seems to have no concept of what it takes to get to the top in a totally top down authoritarian state. And this one is complicated by it being a theocracy.

Authoritarianism is like a massive beast with a mind of it's own. No one person can change it overnight, becuse it is not so much ingrained into the system, it is the system.

And I think we saw this with the USSR. Gorbachev was a person who tried to change it, and he almost done it, but the beast was still there wanting fed. And Putin fed it. The only way to really break the beast, is by not feeding it. And at the moment, Trump is stood there at the side of it's pen, throwing it the best lean steak.

As a thought experiment, imagine Reagan today with VZ. He has Maduro in a NY cell, and the country is ready. The Beast is still there, he done a deal with it to get Maduro after all. But he has something for the people. The concept of democracy and freedom. I don't think he would turn around and say, "They gave me all their oil". Nah, he would ask people to take on the beast. Might not work, but he would try. I do not like Reagan at all by the way. But he had an ideology.

For Trump .... it's $$$$$$$.

I am aware you know this Dr P. Just posting for the thread.

Was it ever a Memorandum of Understanding, or was it a Memorandum of Misunderstanding?

Personally, I think it was another Trump lie. He wanted something for his Birthday, his NATO meet and July 4th Party (that nobody went to).

But we will need to wait for someone on the US inside to write a book about it before we know.

It's obvious that the Trump administration suffers from a complete deficit of knowledge about Iran, exacerbated by the complete gutting of the State Department as soon as he came back into office.

Iran’s history as an ancient civilization is rich and varied littered with conquests and being conquered. As my Iranian friend put it, we Iranians are as complicated as a Persian rug.

Take for example the bombing of water desalination plants in Iran. Anyone who has studied Shia Islam would know how symbolic water is to Iranians:
"On the Day of Ashura, Imam Husayn (the Prophet's grandson) and his 72 companions were martyred at Karbala while enduring a brutal three-day siege. Deprived of water by the Umayyad army in the scorching desert, his camp—including women and young children—suffered immense thirst before his final stand"

The only person who has mentioned this was Joe Kent who resigned due to this war. He mentioned during an interview that to Shia's suffering is not punishment and won't make them back down.

Robert Barnes Trump’s former lawyer also mentioned in a different interview about how Trump was "shocked" by the millions who attended Khamenei's funeral in Iran and Iraq.

The perceived advantage to Trump, not the country, is that his ego demands a win. The way for this to happen, in his mind, is through financial/economic means. Attacking tankers is denying Iran a means of selling any oil so this degrades Iran's financial position further.

When Iranians start starving, the US won't be rushing in with humanitarian aid either. Left unchecked, Trump will turn Iran into Gaza, even if he hasn't yet realised that's what he's doing. And it will lead to Holy War for decades. Americans don't know what they have unleashed with Trump's ego war.

Quote :"And it will lead to Holy War for decades. Americans don't know what they have unleashed with Trump's ego war.".

I disagree with that sorry. I don't know much about Islam, but I do know Trumps Evangelical Christian base did vote for him to get exactly this. They wanted exactly what Trump is doing to bring forward a Holy war. Most of his cabinet want it too. It's what they pray for.

They believe he will bring the Rapture.

Twiglets1 · 18/07/2026 18:09

I don't personally think it has anything to do with actual religion - it's all about money, power and male ego. None of the leaders on either side could actually believe in God/Allah or they would be scared about the judgement from them.

trumpredcard · 18/07/2026 18:41

Ah @RedTagAlan we will have to disagree on this though I do not dispute Trump's use of bibical imagery to support his war. Many Evangelical Christians are part of Trump's MAGA base because of a single factor, and that's usually his anti-abortion stance. They don't necessarily believe that Israel and the Iran War etc are signals for the End of Times that leads to the Rapture.

However, there does exist a specific network of Far Right, prophecy-minded pastors (egPaula White), supporters eg Laura Loomer and officials like 'warrior' Hegseth, around Trump who frame the war with Iran through a biblical, end-times prism.

Pastor Greg Laurie, a regular presence in Trump's prayer circle, linked the killing of Iran's ayatollah to end-times prophecy, saying he believed the rapture was the next event on the "prophetic calendar," followed by the tribulation and the Battle of Armageddon, reading Iran as the biblical nation tied to Gog and Magog in Ezekiel. https://theintercept.com/2026/04/04/paula-white-iran-war-christian-evangelicals/

Franklin Graham praised the strikes on Iran in biblical terms and compared Trump to the biblical Esther, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used explicitly religious language, comparing a rescued airman to Christ's resurrection. https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/04/08/politics/washington/us-iran-war-trump-evangelicals-holy-war/

We've even had that weird TS post of Trump as Jesus, as Trump's own attempt to lean into the idea of his Presidency as a mystical, religious event.

But I don't see the Rapture as fuelling major support for the War. Plus not all Magats who do support the war are Far Right evangelicals into hastening Apocalypse in the Middle East. They just support it because they support Trump.

Analysis: Evangelicals amplify Trump's religious framing of Iran war

Trump has struggled to persuade Americans to back the war, which has raised energy prices and eroded his standing among voters.
