US, Iran and mediators discuss terms for a 45-day ceasefire

As reported by Axios, the U.S., Iran and a group of regional mediators are discussing the terms for a potential 45-day ceasefire that could lead to a permanent end to the war, according to four U.S., Israeli and regional sources with knowledge of the talks.

Four sources with knowledge of the diplomatic efforts said the negotiations are taking place through Pakistani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators and also through text messages sent between Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

  • A U.S. official said the Trump administration gave Iran several proposals in recent days, but so far Iranian officials hadn't accepted them.
  • The sources said the mediators are discussing with the parties the terms for two-phased deal; the first phase would a potential 45-day ceasefire during which a permanent end to the war would be negotiated.
  • The ceasefire could be extended if more time were needed for talks, one of the sources said.
  • The second phase would be an agreement on ending the war.
  • The sources said mediators think that fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz and a solution for Iran's highly enriched Uranium — either through its removal from the country or dilution — could only be a result of a final deal.
  • These two issues are Iran's main bargaining chips in the negotiations and the Iranians will not agree to fully give up on them for only 45 days of ceasefire, two of the sources said.
  • The mediators want to see whether Iran could take partial step on both issues in the first phase of the deal. They are also working on steps the Trump administration could take to give Iran guarantees that the ceasefire will not be temporary and that the war will not resume.

What can possibly go wrong here....

Trump to Salem News Channel on the Iranian people: “They have to have guns and I think they're getting some guns. As soon as they have guns, they'll fight like as good as anybody there is."

It's good that shops are getting through international waters. Shouldn't be stopped from passing.

Not international waters. That is part of the problem. The SoH is territorial. There is freedom of navigation under UNCLOS, but neither Iran or the US have ratified it, so technically are not bound to it.

Oman have ratified UNCLOS however.

UNCLOS does have a bit about freedom of navigation for warships. That is they can pass if going somewhere, and are in a non combative condition.

A US warship going into Iranian territorial waters in an armed condition to attack the coastal state does not have freedom of navigation.

It's the same as how a Russian warship can go through the channel to get somewhere. But what it can't do is park off Dover and monitor the port of Dover.

See my update at 10.11 today:

According to Al Jazeera that is … Reuters seem to say something different.

The point is that you shared unconfirmed information.

That is common on this board for people to share information they have read somewhere. I did confirm after posting that my source was Al Jazeera which people on these boards generally seem to consider a reputable source, despite them having an obvious bias (pro Iran).

It doesn't change the fact that you shared unconfirmed information, regardless of what the news outlets say.

According to the Korean government briefing posted on May 5, 2026, on the Korean presidential website, “In order to determine the cause in a more objective and reliable manner, investigators from the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal and fire investigation experts from the National Fire Agency will be urgently dispatched to the site, separately from the shipping company's own internal investigation.” (Translated using a translator).

They are approaching the incident cautiously, rather than trying to portray "who did what" the way the news media is doing only one day after the incident.

Fair enough. Ships do go on fire.

The plot thickens.

According to The Independent:

On Tuesday, Seoul said it was investigating the cause of an explosion onboard HMM Namu, which was anchored off the coast of the UAE.

“The exact cause of the accident will be figured out after the vessel is towed and its damage assessed,” South Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that all crew members, six Koreans and 18 foreigners, were safe.

However, Mr Trump swiftly blamed Tehran and urged Seoul to join his campaign. “Iran has taken some shots at unrelated nations with respect to the ship movement, PROJECT FREEDOM, including a South Korean cargo ship,” he posted on his Truth Social platform. “Perhaps it’s time for South Korea to come and join the mission! We’ve shot down seven small boats or, as they like to call them, ‘fast’ boats.”

A few hours later, South Korea said the presidential office was reviewing whether the country should join the mission.

(This seems to tie in with what Al Jazeera reported about South Korea saying it will “review its position” on joining Project Freedom after an Iranian attack on one of its vessels).

Hegseth is giving his press conference if anyone can stomach it

TopPocketFind · 05/05/2026 13:18

Disclaimer on the BBC

And a reminder these briefings are closely choreographed by Hegseth and his officials, often favouring questions from media outlets which last year signed up to a restrictive new set of Pentagon press pass conditions - that a judge has ruled as unconstitutional.

Most mainstream outlets, including the BBC, declined to sign up to those conditions.

I'm talking about the claim included in the post. South Korea is investigating the cause of the fire/explosion on the vessel , but the cause has been already confirmed in your post and I'm pointing it out.

US, Iran and mediators discuss terms for a 45-day ceasefire
