US, Iran and mediators discuss terms for a 45-day ceasefire

As reported by Axios, the U.S., Iran and a group of regional mediators are discussing the terms for a potential 45-day ceasefire that could lead to a permanent end to the war, according to four U.S., Israeli and regional sources with knowledge of the talks.

Four sources with knowledge of the diplomatic efforts said the negotiations are taking place through Pakistani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators and also through text messages sent between Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

  • A U.S. official said the Trump administration gave Iran several proposals in recent days, but so far Iranian officials hadn't accepted them.
  • The sources said the mediators are discussing with the parties the terms for two-phased deal; the first phase would a potential 45-day ceasefire during which a permanent end to the war would be negotiated.
  • The ceasefire could be extended if more time were needed for talks, one of the sources said.
  • The second phase would be an agreement on ending the war.
  • The sources said mediators think that fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz and a solution for Iran's highly enriched Uranium — either through its removal from the country or dilution — could only be a result of a final deal.
  • These two issues are Iran's main bargaining chips in the negotiations and the Iranians will not agree to fully give up on them for only 45 days of ceasefire, two of the sources said.
  • The mediators want to see whether Iran could take partial step on both issues in the first phase of the deal. They are also working on steps the Trump administration could take to give Iran guarantees that the ceasefire will not be temporary and that the war will not resume.

Latest Truth from Trump

A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!

Guaranteed to force Iran to concede to all Trump's demands, of course.

I really hope this is just "the art of the deal" 🙄 bluster and he does chicken out.

Completely terrifying. How is this happening?!

shuddacuddadidnt · 07/04/2026 14:02

How unfortunate that this deranged, old man has the might of the US armed forces at his fingertips.
I believe they're attacking Kharg Island atm.

Twiglets1 · 07/04/2026 14:20

Trump's rhetoric is completely over the top and shameful. He's behaving like a cartoon villain which I trust is mainly for intimidation purposes.

He must be trying to scare the IRGC but not much sign it is working, that I have seen. Although there are diplomatic negotiations going on behind the scenes of course.

Hard for Trump to climb down from the sort of language he is using, unless some kind of deal can be done very soon.

Trump can't intimidate an entire nation facing with an existentialist threat. He's a fool who thinks that the mob tactics he used successfully in his strong arm, dodgy business practices will work against Iran. What he is doing is creating generations of Iranians determined to get their revenge regardless of any 'deal' being accepted by both parties.

I know some don’t like Al Jazeera but this is an interesting article on some of the Iranian embassies around the world responces to Trumps posts

‘ His broadside came days after he threatened to send Iran back to the “Stones Ages” unless it agreed to a deal to end the war.

Iran, on the other hand, has avoided matching Trump’s rhetoric. Rather, it dismissed his threats as “stupid”

while
Iranian diplomatic missions from across the world have trolled Trump on social media, using tongue-in-cheek responses.

Iranian missions take to social media
Iranian embassies from London to Pretoria, and New Delhi to Moscow, launched a sarcastic campaign on social media, attacking Trump’s mental acuity, mocking his language, and sharing satirical memes.
The most viral exchange occurred over Trump’s blunt demand to “Open the Strait”.

The Iranian embassy in Zimbabwe casually said on X: “We’ve lost the keys.”
The joke quickly snowballed across continents.

The Iranian embassy in South Africa chimed in, telling Zimbabwe, “Shh… the key’s under the flowerpot. Just open for friends.”

Taking the mockery a step further, the Iranian embassy in Bulgaria responded to the thread with a sharp jab referencing the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein: “Doors open for friends. Epstein’s friends need keys.”

The 25th Amendment
A significant portion of the online campaign focused on painting the 79-year-old US president as mentally unfit and unhinged.

The Iranian embassy in South Africa urged US officials to “seriously think about the 25th amendment, Section 4”, referencing the US constitutional provision for removing a sitting president deemed unfit for office

Who’d have thought it

  • Iran has kinda matched Trump's energy, though not using such over the top language. Iranian state media is reporting on a statement from the IRGC in which it said that it will not hesitate to respond in kind if the US attacks civilian facilities.

Who would have thought that the Iranian regime had such a great sense of humour.

The Lego video, the “Hormuz” titanic AI stuff, trump making war announcements beside an Easter Bunny….

It will all make a great movie one day. I’d be throughly enjoying the show if it wasn’t all so worrying.

Two week ceasefire announced which also covers Lebanon.

All very confused. Iran still firing but they just said they ordered it stopped.

Isreal still attacking Iran an hour ago.

The IRGC warned it could take a little time for everyone in their organisation to get the message of the 2 week ceasefire.

Israel has yet to formally respond to the ceasefire but surely they have to accept it too… things will be clearer in a few hours.

I can't see Israel being happy if true about Lebanon.

I was going to suggest Iranian missiles might take time to get to target, If being fired from inland Iran they would take longer to get there. But I decided not to cos I would likely be called a regime apologist, making excuses for them.

I suppose really it does not help that much of their telecoms appears to have been targeted.

RedTagAlan · 08/04/2026 04:19

And here we go. Sky news feed now. Not very aligned are they ? Is there not an election due there ?

"Netanyahu backs ceasefire but says it does not include Lebanon - report
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the country supports Donald Trump's decision to suspend attacks on Iran for two-weeks, but that the ceasefire does not include Lebanon, according to Israeli media.
It appears to contradict an earlier claim by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who said in a social media post that the pause on hostilities did include Lebanon. "

mids2019 · 08/04/2026 05:34

Could end up a shit show.

Trump obviously had to walk back from his threats politically but the ceasefire is based on a 10 point plan which surely the US can't agree to (and Israel absolutely won't ). It is even uncertain what truly will happen with the strait of Homuz.

Is this a chance for the U.S. to get more assets into the region while benefiting from oil price falls and stick market increases? I don't know.

Doesn't look good at all.

RedTagAlan · 08/04/2026 05:41

Another TRUTH.

Who will be making the big money here ? Because surely folk were making money before the war started ? It's not as if new oil fields have been found. The sums have likely not even been started on how much this daft war, that he started, has cost.

Not clear yet. The ceasefire is based on Iran's 10 point proposal which, if accepted, represents more of a victory for Iran.

Trump seems to be looking at it all from his business point of view - money to be made from construction, after his forces smashed the area up. But this has been a costly war for America, both in terms of money and of international standing.

More like Trump was looking for an off ramp. Both sides will spin it as a victory for them, while Israel will say they didn't agree to it.

RoyalImpatience · 08/04/2026 06:35

Iran don't need a nuke. The past weeks have shown they have something massively more powerful - the strait.

And going by the Iranian plan on the news, Iran have won. It looks to me that Trumps offramp was from an A road onto a dirt track.

And as you say, there is Israel.

I doubt the GCC under attack from Iran agree with your narrow pov.
But regardless, we should be glad of a ceasefire and await the details of how it will hold.

I think it's a bit more nuanced than that (though that is how the IRGC put it). In reality, both sides have put forward proposals (25 in total) and they are both being considered:

Araghchi said in his statement that while Washington had accepted the “general framework” of Iran’s 10-point proposal as a “basis for negotiations,” Iran was in turn considering a 15-point proposal from the US.

In a way they did. They got the IRGC to agree to a temporary ceasefire for negotiations to take place, which is what Trump had been asking for.
