US, Iran and mediators discuss terms for a 45-day ceasefire

As reported by Axios, the U.S., Iran and a group of regional mediators are discussing the terms for a potential 45-day ceasefire that could lead to a permanent end to the war, according to four U.S., Israeli and regional sources with knowledge of the talks.

Four sources with knowledge of the diplomatic efforts said the negotiations are taking place through Pakistani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators and also through text messages sent between Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

  • A U.S. official said the Trump administration gave Iran several proposals in recent days, but so far Iranian officials hadn't accepted them.
  • The sources said the mediators are discussing with the parties the terms for two-phased deal; the first phase would a potential 45-day ceasefire during which a permanent end to the war would be negotiated.
  • The ceasefire could be extended if more time were needed for talks, one of the sources said.
  • The second phase would be an agreement on ending the war.
  • The sources said mediators think that fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz and a solution for Iran's highly enriched Uranium — either through its removal from the country or dilution — could only be a result of a final deal.
  • These two issues are Iran's main bargaining chips in the negotiations and the Iranians will not agree to fully give up on them for only 45 days of ceasefire, two of the sources said.
  • The mediators want to see whether Iran could take partial step on both issues in the first phase of the deal. They are also working on steps the Trump administration could take to give Iran guarantees that the ceasefire will not be temporary and that the war will not resume.

I can't see Trump being forced to do anything, can you?

I can’t see him being forced to negotiate to be fair, but I think that’s what they maybe attempting to do- if there is an Iranian »leadership » that’s leading this.

Equally, I can’t see Trump ignoring what Iran is doing- so it may mean more offensive action by U.S.? Maybe Iran’s economic suffering means that they need to see an end to the blockade sooner rather than later. Some analysts have said Iran can still inflict a lot damage regionally.

Ah, from other thread I can see Iran doing this is in response to U.S. trying to get boats through the strait.

That’s quite an escalation from Iran!
Do you think they might be forcing US to either negotiate or show where else they are going to take this?

No
Gentle knows as we are both on another thread about this
US warship was warned not to move into the Straight. The US had turned off their radar to be undetected but when they turned it back on, as they got near, Iran sent them more than one warning that they were breaking the ceasefire
They ignored

The US have said ( news now )
Two US destroyers have broke the ceasefire and sailed through the Strait
They have switched the trackers off so it can’t be confirmed atm

GentleSheep · 04/05/2026 20:48

Trump speaking, he may mention the war.

US strikes seven Iranian boats, Trump says, as tensions spike in Strait of Hormuz

Summary
President Donald Trump says the US struck seven Iranian "fast boats"after vowing to help stranded vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz. ( yeh right we believe you 😆 that’s my comment btw not the bbc )

Iran's military said it fired warning shots at American warships. The US Central Command denies a claim in Iranian state media that Iranian missiles hit a US destroyer - here's what we've heard
Meanwhile, the US says Navy destroyers and US-flagged merchant ships have sailed through the waterway, with Iran claiming this is "entirely false"
Elsewhere, the UAE says it is defending itself against "missile and drone attacks originating from Iran" - Tehran has yet to comment
Officials say a drone attack has sparked a large fire at the UAE's biggest oil port, in Fujairah

The US president claims Iran has taken aim "at unrelated nations" in the strait, as Tehran says it fired warning shots at a US warship.

Are these little gun or big gun actions? They are like children in a playground. Only the stakes are high and the effects on us all are going to be bad if this escalates beyond this messing around in a huff stuff. I do hope I am right to minimise and slightly mock it. But who knows.

Islandsofsand · 04/05/2026 23:04

I’m actually quite worried about what will happen next and feel for the poor Iranians who suffer at the hands of both the IRGC and the US blockade / bombing. Also worry what this will mean for the U.S. troops and others regionally if there is an escalation.

I can’t help thinking that there are no cool heads around to sort this mess out.

Trump doesn't listen to cool heads or sensible people. That's why the US, Iran and the rest of the world are suffering this shit.🤬

Putin's doing well though.🤔

The US used helicopters to destroy 7 Iranian fast boats, according to Centrom.

Meanwhile, shipping company Maersk told the BBC that one of its US-flagged commercial vessels has successfully exited the SoH under US military protection.

Maersk says the transit was “completed without incident and all crew members are safe and unharmed”.

It says the Alliance Fairfax has been unable to leave the Gulf since February 2026 when the conflict between the US and Iran began.

The shipping company says the ship exited the Gulf accompanied by US military assets and thanks them for their “professionalism and effective co-ordination”.

The IRGC calls this news “lies” but they would (my comment, not the BBCs).

After Iran fires missiles at UAE, the Gulf state’s foreign ministry refers to Iran as a “direct threat to our security and stability”.

It added in a statement that “the UAE reserves its full and legitimate right to respond to these attacks”.

Pete Hegseth is expected to host a News conference today. The US military has said “Project Freedom” involves multiple destroyers, more than 100 aircraft and 15,000 troops.

A small update … South Korea is saying it will “review its position” on joining Project Freedom after an Iranian attack on one of its vessels.

It's good that shops are getting through international waters. Shouldn't be stopped from passing.

A small update … South Korea is saying it will “review its position” on joining Project Freedom after an Iranian attack on one of its vessels.

This is misleading. South Korea does not see the explosion and fire on the vessel were caused by attack. However media outlets try to portray the incident, as far as South Korea is concerned, they have not reached a conclusion on the cause of the explosion. They are trying to identify the cause of the accident according to X post posted 05 May 2026 by South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cho Hyun.
