US, Iran and mediators discuss terms for a 45-day ceasefire

Twiglets1 · 06/04/2026 10:19

As reported by Axios, the U.S., Iran and a group of regional mediators are discussing the terms for a potential 45-day ceasefire that could lead to a permanent end to the war, according to four U.S., Israeli and regional sources with knowledge of the talks.

Four sources with knowledge of the diplomatic efforts said the negotiations are taking place through Pakistani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators and also through text messages sent between Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

  • A U.S. official said the Trump administration gave Iran several proposals in recent days, but so far Iranian officials hadn't accepted them.
  • The sources said the mediators are discussing with the parties the terms for two-phased deal; the first phase would a potential 45-day ceasefire during which a permanent end to the war would be negotiated.
  • The ceasefire could be extended if more time were needed for talks, one of the sources said.
  • The second phase would be an agreement on ending the war.
  • The sources said mediators think that fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz and a solution for Iran's highly enriched Uranium — either through its removal from the country or dilution — could only be a result of a final deal.
  • These two issues are Iran's main bargaining chips in the negotiations and the Iranians will not agree to fully give up on them for only 45 days of ceasefire, two of the sources said.
  • The mediators want to see whether Iran could take partial step on both issues in the first phase of the deal. They are also working on steps the Trump administration could take to give Iran guarantees that the ceasefire will not be temporary and that the war will not resume.

No you wouldn't get reported for saying you hope he suffers or dies and even if you did get reported, the post wouldn't be deleted.

It's personal attacks or racism that are the usual reasons for posts to get deleted, we are all allowed our personal opinions as long as not expressed in a way that insults another user.

See as much as I would have agreed in the past with that idea, I've actually changed my mind and I want him to live a long life and to watch the fruits of his labours manifest in a way that he had not intended and his lifes desires be crushed.

Actually as always Belle you are correct.

Iran’s access to global internet starts to resume after 88-day blackout

Iran’s access to the global internet slowly restarted on Tuesday, ending a record 88-day blackout that has contributed to thousands of Iranians losing their jobs and provided cover for the Iranian security services to mount a large-scale wartime crackdown.

The resumption came despite an interim administrative court order questioning the authority of the body overseeing the move, called the “special headquarters for leading the country’s cyberspace”. The body had been set up by the president, Masoud Pezeshkian, a week ago.

Just after 3.30pm local time in Iran, internet access began to return, reaching more than a third of its previous normal level, according to NetBlocks, a watchdog organisation that monitors web traffic. NetBlocks said Iran had been totally isolated from the global internet for a total of 2,093 hours, the longest such interruption for a country ever recorded.

It will be an intranet. The web where I am is more an intranet then the internet.

I expect social media will be flooded with propaganda.

Twiglets1 · 27/05/2026 05:36

“The first step toward free and regulated access to cyberspace has been taken” Mohammed Reza Aref wrote in a post on X.

While ordinary Iranians have been struggling for web access for about 3 months now, senior officials & leaders regularly post on social media.

In normal times, access to the global internet remains heavily restricted via censorship, while authorities are increasingly relying on an intranet, sometimes called “sovereign internet” to provide connected services without relying on the World Wide Web.

From the i paper:

“In other words, Donald Trump has spent a decade lambasting Barack Obama for paying Iran $1.7bn to suspend its nuclear programme. He is now about to unfreeze $25bn for Iran in return for, in effect, barely anything. The author of the Art of the Deal is about to sign what might be the worst peace deal in US political history.”

Can't see this opinion piece, it's behind a paywall.

But realistically, Trump won't be unfreezing billions in sanctions for "nothing."

If he unfreezes billions in sanctions that will very likely be linked to Iran agreeing to safely dispose of their enriched uranium.

“The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday.

From the same article:

Iran and the US could not get anywhere close to an agreement on what to do with its nuclear material, so, supposedly, the two sides will work this out over the next 60 days. Few experts believe any real progress will be made over that time.

TopPocketFind · 27/05/2026 09:02

Trump's Truth Social posts are the ramblings of an old man.

Trump's Truth Social posts are the ramblings of an old man.

Very often they do come across like that.

However it’s unrealistic to suggest that the US will unfreeze billions for nothing. Time will tell what that is linked to & I highly doubt the US would just trust Iran.

It seems that article got it wrong though. Obama did not pay Iran. He gave them money back.

"1. What the $1.7 billion actually was. The payment resolved a long‑running arbitration dispute dating to military equipment sales to Iran before the 1979 revolution; the State Department framed the settlement as closing the final FMS claim and returning funds that Tehran argued were owed, with the principal of $400 million plus about $1.3 billion in interest totaling roughly $1.7 billion"

This was a lie Trump repeatedly made in his first campaign, and since. And it was paid back in cash because of sanctions.

The article does say there is legal dispute over some aspects, but it is clear it was not money paid as Trump makes out.

As a matter of interest, sort of connected, Trump has been caught stiffing other nations in Arms sales. Nations that have paid for Patriot systems are not getting them now. Diverted to mid east. Germany and Switzerland I think.

Why is it unrealistic?

Is that your opinion?

Because from what I am reading this could be a very realistic scenario.

TopPocketFind · 27/05/2026 09:15

And there is this from CNN:

"Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed Tuesday that 25 vessels, including oil tankers, passed through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours after receiving permission and security coordination from its navy.
In a statement carried by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News, the IRGC Navy said the vessels, which included container ships, transited the strategic waterway during the “last day and night” with coordination and security provided by its forces.
CNN could not independently verify the shipping traffic numbers."

Not known if they had to pay, and CNN says it can't verify it

If true, then I reckon it's fair to assume fees are being paid. Because I am not seeing any claims of credit from the US for any ships passing. In fact, not hearing anything from the US re ship movements, if there are any.

It was reported last month that the Trump admin were considering unfreezing money. Never say never when it comes to Trump it seems. Is that not something he is praised for, doing the unexpected ?

Trump administration considers unfreezing $20 billion in Iranian assets — after lambasting Obama for a similar move | CNN Politics

As part of "negotiations" this has been widely reported as a possibility for some time.

Doing it for "nothing" - that is highly unlikely. The US would only unfreeze money (if it happens) in exchange for something the US want very much, like Iran agreeing to safely dispose of their enriched uranium.

No need to jump on me like that. I was only asking if that was your thinking or if you had read it somewhere.

As I said, the articles and analysis I am reading are indicating that is a realistic option.

We should continue on a new thread as this one is full. Nearly 2 months after it was started and the world is still in limbo.

It is my opinion but even if I had read it somewhere, that would still only be the opinion of the person writing the article.

The deal hasn't happened yet or at least been published, so how can it be anything but opinion what the US would require in order to freeze billions of dollars of Iran money/assets.

Or Iran can just chill and hold out they have survived over 47 years of sanctions and innovated methods to mitigate the pain.

Wheras America is currently 38 trillion in debt with interest payments about to reach 1 trillion a year. It has a stock market that is currently reliant on the AI bubble which needs materials that pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Xi basically told Trump that China will not stop Iran and to keep his hands off Taiwan offering only minor deals. Contrasted with Putin in the following week where dozens of strategic partnership deals were signed.
