Israel attacked Iran early on Saturday morning, saying it had “launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran to remove threats to the state of Israel,” according to a military spokesman.

Israel closed its airspace and declared a state of emergency, in anticipation of
Iranian drone and missile strikes in response.

Explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday, Iranian media reported.

US attacks on Iran begin - reports

US strikes on Iran are underway, according to the New York Times, which cites a US official.

The Associated Press is also reporting that the US is participating in Israel's strikes against Iran.

Israeli security source: Attack on Iran is a joint US, Israeli operation

An Israeli security source says the attack under way in Iran is a joint US-Israel operation, Israel’s Channel 12 reports.

The unconfirmed report says one of the targets is an Iranian presidential facility.

It cites Iranian opposition reports that homes of Iranian leaders are being targeted.

It also says the strikes are targeting sites from which Iran could attack Israel.

No missile fire at Israel has been reported thus far, and Israelis are required to stay near safe rooms but not to enter them.

Worrying news to wake up to.

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 28/02/2026 07:09

Praying that it's successful.

I cannot believe how poorly reported Iran's genocide of its own people - carried out since the start of this year - has been.

And the country wants nuclear weapons.

If you look at the Middle East channels on Telegram, there's reports that Iranians are celebrating bombings of their own capital city.

Worrying news to wake up to.

Worrying but also somehow inevitable.

What with the US moving their warships and aircrafts towards the region over recent days, and the latest round of nuclear talks with Iran on Thursday apparently failing to reach agreement.

Yes, well after the US action in Venezuelan, it opened the door to them repeating it in Iran.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 28/02/2026 07:12

To recap: there was a treaty to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons that everyone was happy with. Trump tore it up in his first term and couldn't be bothered to replace it. Now in his second term, he's bombing Iran to force it to accept an arms treaty.

Is this what they call The Art of the Deal?

Iran can't be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Agree Iran murdering their own people by the thousands has been under reported by the UK media.

What a sad state of affairs when the citizens of a country would feel so desperate for change that they celebrate bombings of their own capital city.

This is not true.

The JCPOA was opposed by several Gulf states because it gave too much power to Iran and ultimately would have done nothing to stop them developing nuclear weapons.

The three most powerful countries in the Middle East are Iran, Saudi Arabia and Israel and two of them made it clear that the JCPOA had failed. And the other was Iran

Israel first? Interesting.

This must have been in co ordination with the US but is this going to be a sock prior to a a US attack?

It means that the next week's diplomacy will be on hold so the US only has the military option. I think the US will soon be in perosonally.

Thoughts?

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/02/2026 07:39

I was expecting the US to go for Iran or Cuba sooner or later. I didn't anticipate Israel going first.

Twiglets1 · 28/02/2026 07:40

A US official has told the New York Times that dozens of US strikes are being carried out by attack planes at bases around the Middle East and by one or more aircraft carriers.

Sources told Al Jazeera that the US & Israel have assessed in the last 24 hours that there is “no room for negotiations with Iran”.

Trump's really desperate for that Peace Prize, hey?

mids2019 · 28/02/2026 07:41

Yes the US is in.

Hope the regime falls.

WhatWouldRoyKentSay · 28/02/2026 07:42

Eeek, none of that's good.

My husband is flying Sweden-Dubai in six hours. I guess this means they'll be taking the long way around.

It’s has now become clear that it’s a joint operation by the US & Israel though it appears that Israel did strike first.

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 28/02/2026 07:45

I don't know why it was initially reported as an Israeli strike.. US news was saying within a few minutes that it was a joint operation. Trump has now confirmed it

mids2019 · 28/02/2026 07:47

Well Israel was always going to the the country under extistential threat from an Iranian nuclear weapon and it wants like Iran wasn't warned.....

I wonder if the strikes will be hard enough basically to prevent much of any Iranian retaliation and with current protest against the regime it might collapse quickly? Given the sheer night of the of the US arsenal I wouldn't be surprised if so Khamenei is in Moscow.

WhatWouldRoyKentSay · 28/02/2026 07:48

Yes @TheFilliesWillRiseAgain, our news agencies announced it as an Israeli strike, and have now amended it to, with US help.

mids2019 · 28/02/2026 07:51

Trumps language does not indicate this is a limited strike. If you were the IGRC then I would think about paying down arms and covetly approaching the US about immunity with a new democratic Iran.

I’m not sure … will ask MN to amend the title of the thread.

What's the end-game? Israel won't accept a minor regime change like Venezuela.

Agreed. Trump is referring to it as a “major combat operation”.

A complete change of regime, I think. To one less hostile to Israel.

I wonder if the Shah's son will be parachuted in.
