Bondi Beach gunman ‘pledged allegiance to Islamic State’
Australia’s spy agency had reportedly investigated Bondi Beach gunman Naveed Akram over his ties to Islamic State.
Naveed Akram, 24, and his father Sajid Akram, 50, have been named as the terror suspects responsible for the attack on Jewish families who were celebrating Hanukkah in Sydney on Sunday evening local time.
Naveed Akram, a recently unemployed bricklayer, had been added to a watchlist in 2019 and was believed to have pledged allegiance to the IS terrorist group, the Australian Broadcast Corporation reported.
ASIO, the Australian spy agency, and local police confirmed he was “known” to them but they did not consider him an “immediate” threat.
His father, a small business owner, was licensed to own six guns.
On Sunday, the pair drove to Australia’s most famous beach armed with long arm rifles and homemade bombs before opening fire on hundreds of people who were gathered for ‘Chanukah by the Sea’.
Police recovered a black and white IS flag in a car linked to the men as they searched the vehicle for explosives.
Sixteen people were killed, including the shooter, and 42 people were hospitalised in what is one of the nation’s worst massacres. The youngest victim, Matilda, was just 10 years old.
Sajid Akram died in a shootout with police after he fired on the crowd of beachgoers for over 10 minutes. His son remains in hospital under police guard.
