People brush off anything Hamas do with “well they can’t be expected to behave decently, they are a terrorist organisation”. And the Palestinian people have no agency apparently so the end result is only Israel can be blamed and it’s like the IDF are only fighting civilians because they don’t bother mentioning Hamas.

I have a feeling there's a bit of patronising racism going on, too. There seems to be an assumption that Hamas and its wealthy allies couldn't possibly be internet savvy or have a sophisticated media strategy..

This is such an important factor. I think the infantilising of Palestinians is a big part of the whole discourse. If you pretend/believe Israel are white colonisers and Palestinians are brown victims then you have a nice binary framework to view the whole confluct. Israel can do no right because it is solely responsible, Palestinians can do no wrong because they have no agency. It is racism. Its also bollocks historically but the binary brain can't compute the reality and if being 'antiracist' is part of your identity then ergo your position can't be racist. You can't talk to these people because they think 'I am not antisemitic' is a legitimate contribution to a conversation. If you say 'yes you are' you get banned on here 😁

Well yes, quite! Plus, US funding apparently means a lot more than funding by oil-rich countries such as Qatar. I suppose Gaza has less to show for it, on the surface anyway, thanks to the way Hamas invested its wealth.

The more successful Israel is the more it proves its worst instincts (the American money is Iron dome, not much else). The more aid Palestinians hoover up the more they prove their victimhood. How people can't see this is a mystery.

Yes, and the useful idiots of the identarian left will always see Muslims as the good guys and Jews / Christians / The West as the bad guys.

A lot of it is just down to fashionable causes. Not only are these activists oblivious to the plight of Christians in Nigeria, Sudan etc, they also don't care much about the oppression of Uighur Muslims in China because it doesn't fit the binary. Uighurs are being persecuted horribly but it's not by The Jews or The West so the activists aren't interested. Infantile thinking.

Agreed. Fashion and lifestyle are a definite part of it. Its a gang mentality. I know because I used to be part of a protesting leftie culture before I got suffocated by it. I am amazed now at how much I went along with. Christians being persecuted will never slot into the hierarchy even black girls. Its an abomination.

Teddleshon1 · 23/12/2025 14:22

Couldn’t agree more on the “patronising racism” thing. See Zack Polanski’s bum wiping remarks as an example.

David Aaronovitch recently tweeted in response to that ludicrous academic paper in defence of FGM with a comment along the lines that in the real world it is vanishingly unlikely that there is any tolerance for FGM. What he means of course is among people like him, the underlying implication is that those actually practising FGM aren’t somehow fully functioning human beings. Almost like they couldn’t be expected to know better.

Do you not follow the demands by organisations, you may well consider "left" such as Amnesty, for the Chinese to stop their persecution of the Uighur? or their campaigns on kidnappings and persecutions in Nigeria?

The Business Committee in Parliament, led by a Labour chair, has also had investigations in Christian persecution around the world.

Its very narrow minded thinking and possibly done with another agenda, to make this a "Right vs Left" issue.

The issues should be far too important to be reduced in this manner but our media focus on one or two issues, giving the impression that these are all that matters.

We are not talking about organisations (who themselves have a disproportionate focus on Israel) but the wider culture. All across the country people are protesting about Israel - hardly ever about these other issues and never have they lead to large scale or persistent protests.

I'm glad some organisations are highlighting the plight of Christians and Uighurs.

But are there large scale weekly demonstrations in London and other cities protesting about the persecution of Christians and Uighurs? No, there aren't. Because it doesn't fit the fashionable narrative.

Teddleshon1 · 23/12/2025 15:32

@Southernecho in the six month period after October 7 The Guardian published 459 articles about Gaza. Articles specifically on the plight of the Uighurs in the last 3 years in the same newspaper number in the dozens.

EasternStandard · 23/12/2025 16:01

I was just reading about Walid Saadaoui and Amar Hussein who planned Paris-style suicide gun assault and are in court. Terrifying stuff.

The violent rhetoric is off the scale.

Walid Saadaoui planned to smuggle four high-powered military grade AK 47 rifles, two pistols and 900 rounds of ammunition into the UK. He had paid a deposit on the weapons in February 2024. His plan was to use these to carry out an attack on a mass march against Antisemitism in Manchester city centre, and then to move the attack to an area of north Manchester occupied predominantly by the Jewish community.

I've only just caught up on the details. Fucking terrifying.

Twiglets1 · 23/12/2025 17:50

Very very scary to think that could have gone ahead.

The BBC News just quoted Greater Manchester police who said it "could potentially have been the deadliest terrorist attack in UK history"

I'm so glad that incredibly brave people have been working behind the scenes to nip this sort of thing in the bud.

Without undercover police we would be in a lot of trouble. Very brave people.

Awful. The UK and others have been sleepwalking into problems for years. Meanwhile Jewish people are being targeted, who's next, Christians?

I think everyone is next. Look at what is happening to Hindus in Bangladesh. Even if people haven't the empathetic capcity to care about Jews they should care for their own self interest. Islamist terrorism is of course a threat to non-fundamentalist muslims too.

My mum died several years ago, i cannot remember the exact organisation she supported but its aim was to highlight the persecution of Christians around the world.
A few days ago, Christians were targeted in Nigeria, today there was an attack and kidnap of Muslims there.

Man's inhumanity to man, knows no bounds as she used to say.

Saadaoui told Farouk: "If we were to carry out this operation, we target the Jews. We start with the Jews and if there any Christians caught in the act, that is a bonus, but we start with the Jews."

Islamic State supporters guilty of planning 'most deadly' gun attack on Jewish targets in Manchester

Greater Manchester Police said the consequences of carrying out such an attack on the Jewish community would have been "catastrophic".

Yep its very wrong isn't it.

Gaza i suppose is in everyone's mind, what happens in China, as we drive to work in our Chinese EV's and post on threads such as this on our Chinese made phones and laptops, is not.

Its convenient to push it to one side, as it would expose our own hypocrisy.

But why is Gaza 'in everyone's mind', why aren't the Christians in everyone's minds?

Why is Gaza elevated as a concern above all others? It's the inconsistency that grates.
