Can the ceasefire hold?

Hamas has only returned 9 out of the 28 bodies it agreed to return as part of the ceasefire agreement. The Israel government has threatened to reduce the promised aid supplies to Gaza in retaliation. Hamas have announced that it can't find the bodies of any more Israelis hostages, which has made some people question the future of the ceasefire.

Israel’s defence minister threatened on Wednesday to resume fighting if Hamas does not honour the continuing terms of the deal. On a more optimistic note however, the BBC reports that in a call with reporters last night, senior US advisers were downplaying the risk. The advisers said there was "understanding" to get all the live hostages, which Hamas did "honour".

We have a "mechanism in place", and are working with mediators to get as many bodies "as possible" out, they explained and, "We continue to hear from them that they intend to honour the deal."

Hamas says that specialist equipment will be required to find and retrieve the bodies of the other hostages and they are working with other countries to achieve this. Turkey, for example is in talks to send experts on body retrieval.

The BBC states that According to those advisers, the US government does not so far believe Hamas has broken the agreement by not yet retrieving the remains of remaining deceased hostages.

US downplays threat to Gaza ceasefire as Hamas says more time needed to find hostage bodies

Hamas handed over two bodies overnight - Israel identifies them as sergeant-major Muhammad al-Atarash, 39, and Inbar Hayman, 27.

Actually it was 55:45 to Israel and then Israel took several hundred metres extra as a buffer before the yellow line so have taken the majority of Gaza. Under orders from Katz they are demolishing the remaining buildings in Israel controlled territories which many believe signals that they are getting that land ready for settlers and do not intend to return it.

Sounds like paranoid speculation similar to how people were speculating before the ceasefire that Netanyahu would never allow a ceasefire or that Israel would want to take over running the whole of Gaza but they don’t want that.

“The right wing of the prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition is fiercely opposed to further withdrawal, and the internationalisation of control over Gaza.

In the impasse, the yellow line continues to take on a more permanent form, and is increasingly referred to in Israeli media as a “new border”.

Writing in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the military correspondent Yoav Zitun predicted the yellow line could evolve into “a high and sophisticated barrier that will shrink the Gaza Strip, enlarge the western Negev and allow for Israeli settlements to be built there”.”

Fears Gaza ‘temporary’ ceasefire line could become permanent new border

Yellow markers installed by IDF entrench divide that cuts strip in two, as hopes of moving to next phase of truce fade

Meanwhile, though President Trump said he would not let Israel annexe the West Bank it is being de facto annexed daily.

Alantraitor · 27/10/2025 05:33

So people are now objecting to the concrete posts because they make the yellow line look too permanent? When previously they were objecting to the lack of a physical line saying how were Palestinians supposed to know where it was?

It’s a temporary line which will move during phase 2 and the Right wing of Netanyahu’s party can’t change that. They aren’t in charge and while they wouldn’t have signed the peace plan, Netanyahu did.

Also @KoalaKoKo you say "actually it was 55/45 to Israel and then Israel took several hundred metres extra as a buffer before the yellow line so have taken the majority of Gaza".

But according to the BBC satellite images, Israel had control of about 53% of Gaza on 13th October (the yellow line) so even allowing for the buffer zone, they wouldn't have more than 55% of the territory today. It's not supposed to be a permanent line but a temporary one until phase 2 when Hamas return the remaining dead hostages, disarm and leave Gaza.

People should stop berating and nitpicking at Israel for complying with the ceasefire, and look to Hamas to comply with phase 2.

thingsarelookingupfornigel · 27/10/2025 10:59

They’ve killed 8 Palestinians and are still not allowing in the aid which was part of the deal. Works both ways.

EasternStandard · 27/10/2025 11:24

The ceasefire still holds? That’s good in itself. The longer the better chance. Not sure where we are with phase 2.

I heard they have started phase 2 negotiations as Trump said something like they don’t have to completely finish phase 1 before making a start on phase 2.

Whether Hamas will co-operate re disarming & leaving Gaza though, is the bit I’m not sure about. If they refuse that could end the ceasefire as Trump seems to be losing patience with them. The dead hostages is another pressure point. Israel are saying they believe some of the dead bodies could be easily returned by Hamas, though not all.

Tunnels.

Tunnels.

Yes, I read that the reason is tunnels too.

So
are they required to make good after
There’s nothing in the article and nothing in anything else I’ve googled to try to find out and nothing in the ceasefire agreement about this either
?

No idea. I read it yesterday, but I can’t remember where.

MushMonster · 28/10/2025 17:23

Nope. We sadly had full confirmation today.
I have no words left....

ClockworkGoose · 28/10/2025 17:47

It was never going to last. Neither side were ever going to comply. It was always going to be one big ‘they violated it first’ tit for tat.

Netanyahu ordered the Israeli military to immediately "carry out powerful attacks" in Gaza. A statement by his office said he had ordered the attacks but did not specify the reason.

However an Israeli military official said Hamas violated the ceasefire by carrying out an attack against Israeli forces in an area of the enclave that is under Israeli control.

Netanyahu also accused Hamas of violating the agreement by turning over some wrong remains in a process of returning the bodies of hostages to Israel.

Hamas said it was complying with the ceasefire terms.

They’ve both been accusing each other of violations ever since the ceasefire began.

HellsBalls · 28/10/2025 18:45

Israel must meet the attack with overwhelming force, as that’s all Hamas understands.

Not Hamas.
