Can the ceasefire hold?

Hamas has only returned 9 out of the 28 bodies it agreed to return as part of the ceasefire agreement. The Israel government has threatened to reduce the promised aid supplies to Gaza in retaliation. Hamas have announced that it can't find the bodies of any more Israelis hostages, which has made some people question the future of the ceasefire.

Israel’s defence minister threatened on Wednesday to resume fighting if Hamas does not honour the continuing terms of the deal. On a more optimistic note however, the BBC reports that in a call with reporters last night, senior US advisers were downplaying the risk. The advisers said there was "understanding" to get all the live hostages, which Hamas did "honour".

We have a "mechanism in place", and are working with mediators to get as many bodies "as possible" out, they explained and, "We continue to hear from them that they intend to honour the deal."

Hamas says that specialist equipment will be required to find and retrieve the bodies of the other hostages and they are working with other countries to achieve this. Turkey, for example is in talks to send experts on body retrieval.

The BBC states that According to those advisers, the US government does not so far believe Hamas has broken the agreement by not yet retrieving the remains of remaining deceased hostages.

US downplays threat to Gaza ceasefire as Hamas says more time needed to find hostage bodies

Hamas handed over two bodies overnight - Israel identifies them as sergeant-major Muhammad al-Atarash, 39, and Inbar Hayman, 27.

But it's just fine to blame the victims of Israeli gunfire? Why were they walking there, they shouldn't have walked there if they didn't want to get shot. For all we know they wanted to find their dead childs remains under the rubble but it's fine that they were shot because why were they walking along unarmed!

Omg.

October 7 was kids at a party. Families in their beds. Completely innocent people, who had no reason to expect an attack.

The people shot a few days ago were adults approaching a ceasefire line, in the first few days of a fragile ceasefire, who continued to approach soldiers after being warned not to.

There is no equivalence.

Why is there this constant need to draw false equivalence between completely different situations? Whats the point of it?

You know what. Ive just realized what the point of all this false equivalency is.

You need it in order to make the fact you hate Israel more than you hate Hamas make sense.

If Israel are as bad as Hamas, it justifies how you feel.

If you feel uncomfortable with the IDF being compared to Hamas, then maybe the IDF should behave less like them.

Pippalongsticking · 16/10/2025 17:36

Sadly the ceasefire won’t hold. I don’t think either side can keep the peace unless we get a regime change in both countries.

Completely agree - both the IDF and Hamas have committed brutal acts.

You respect Hamas? You deserve to be banned.

Unfortunately I didn’t copy her praising Sinwar and his ‘last stand’ trying to hit the drone with a stick.
Such a role model. Such a martyr.

I hope MN bans them but who knows? Maybe MNHQ thinks it's ok to have Sinwar fans openly praising him on the site.

Its illegal to support Hamas so its quite a surprise to find it tolerated by MN.

The soldiers fired warning shots.
Would you approach soldiers who were shooting towards you?

See, straight up victim blaming. Fuck knows what they thought, I'm sure they hear 'warning shots' all the time. Did they know the warning was directed at them? We don't even know if there were warning shots but straight off well they shouldn't have been there if they didn't want to get shot. It reminds me of the premature babies Israel left to rot, posters here saying well why did their parents leave them.

What's the point in pointing out that posters here routinely victim blame Palestinians? I think posters should be aware of their blatant racism and bias. Their eager willingness to blame all Palestinian deaths on Palestinians themselves, someone earlier was trying to imply that they were torturing themselves in detention ffs.

Also 'facts matter' but there was a children's party attacked on Oct 7?

Alantraitor · 16/10/2025 20:59

@CrossChecking you're wasting your time.

You're not convincing anyone just repeating the same thing.

Israel has already broken the ceasefire.

At least 9 killed on 14th October

https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-violates-ceasefire

Nothing in comparison to the number of Palestinians Hamas have been dragging out into the street and slaughtering. On of the conditions is Hamas should give up power - that’s not going to happen. Are we going to see the pro Palestine marchers marching against Hamas this weekend?

Well that's just fine then, who cares if Israel kills more of them?! Palestinian life is cheap.

Your post makes no sense. It is very clear that the people who think Palestinian life is cheap is (and always has been Hamas). They deliberately carried out such terrible atrocities Israel would have no choice but to react, it deliberately hid behind its population to ensure Israel could not target Hamas without hitting ordinary citizens. I’m sorry but Hamas has been playing on the West, manipulating people. Are you one of them?

KoalaKoKo · 17/10/2025 09:57

Israel have killed another two Palestinians in Gaza, that is 11 since they agreed to a “ceasefire”. They have also now begun rounding up the prisoners that they released as part of the ceasefire taking 3 recently released men hostage.

In addition Dr Abu Safiya who famously refused to abandon his patients as the IDF bombed it (and assassinated his son with a drone) has just had his detention extended by 6 months. He has gone from 95kg to 60kg and despite entering detention healthy is now in a bad way, just like thousands of others who are held without charge or access to a trial.

Pro Israeli posters jeered people for not trusting that Israel would abide to the ceasefire and said anti genocide protesters don’t want peace. This is what we thought would happen. Israel always finds a reason to bomb Palestine and detain Palestinians. There is always some small print or interpretation of the rules that is used to restart the killing. It is not lost on me that some people may be using the Israeli apps that give guides on what to post and there have been a lot of posts about how Palestinians will just kill each other the last few days - it does make one wonder if the scene is being set for why they had to break the ceasefire.

Why do you only comment ever comment on Palestinians killed by the IDF never Palestinians killed by Hamas? There's a lot in the media about that at the moment.

Look through my posts, I have countless times, it has been discussed at length. Why are you not concerned that a country with a strong history of breaking ceasefires is still executing people for crossing invisible lines as they try to make their way home to the rubble of their houses and retrieve their murdered family members?

Why are you not posting about a country with a history of breaking ceasefires, breaking the terms of that ceasefire by rounding up the hostages that they recently released.

Why are you not concerned that a renowned Doctor is being held without charge or access to legal or medical aid and has lost 38% of his body weight in detention. Why are you not concerned that despite agreeing to release him his detention has now been extended by another 6 months.

You started a thread about concern for a ceasefire and yet do not want to know about the many ways the ceasefire agreement is being broken.

Israel no more guilty of breaking ceasefire requirements than Hamas.

Israel is now having to put out physical markers at the line they have retreated to so no one can pretend they didn’t know not to walk towards soldiers shouting at you not to come any closer.

The doctor I don’t know anything about.

Where are the 20 point piece plan does it say that Palestinians are not allowed to go beyond the line the Israelis have retreated to?

Hint: it doesn't. The IDF retain control of the areas beyond the line but there's no reason civilian shouldn't be there going about their business. They certainly shouldn't be killed for it.

For Israel are acting as if that area beyond is annexed, then that's a land grab in contravention of the peace plan.

Do you think common sense might come into play here? I wouldn’t be walking towards a military group during a fragile ceasefire and not stopping when they shout at me to stop.

Can’t imagine anyone thought it needed saying.
