Conflict in the Middle East

How is forced starvation allowed?

1000 replies

Tinycatnoise · 23/07/2025 22:28

The top story in the BBC right now is the starvation of Gazans by Israel. The images are horrifying and not dissimilar to seeing those images of concentration camps in Nazi Germany. I cried seeing those and am crying now. I am sure someone will claim antisemitism because of this statement, but anyone looking at these images of starving children would agree.

How is this still going on? I feel like we are watching a genocide take place that the world has turning a blind eye to. The daily shooting by Israel of people trying to get aid too is just barbaric. If nothing is being done to stop this, what is the next horror that will unfold in the world that people will just accept?

The UK considers Israel to be an occupying power in Gaza. That makes it the responsibility of Israel, under international law, to ensure aid gets delivered.

You can’t really blame the UN for not distributing aid.

I am struggling to believe the Israelis could not distribute the aid themselves if they wanted to.

Either way, this is for Israel to fix.

Why is the UN not distributing the aid that is already INSIDE Gaza and refusing offers to help then?

Yes, those of us not blinded by hatred towards the Jewish people and have just a little bit of rationality, can see EXACTLY what is happening.

I’m not saying this is the only reason the UN may not be distributing that aid but I’m sure a big factor is how many UN workers have now been killed in Gaza. They have a responsibility to protect their own workers from harm.

I think the IDF has shown an ability to infiltrate and kill people outside of its country’s borders - they are a scarily impressive force when it comes to covert operations and targeting individuals. It seems strange that this is possible and yet so many children have been killed or have suffered, and continue to suffer, in Gaza.

You seem to know a lot about the reality of what is going on in Israel/Gaza. I think it would be helpful to know where you are getting your information and updates from so we can all seek to understand what’s really going on. I’m sure you can understand that for a lot of people, it’s hard to hear about the number of people killed by the IDF (it took over 18 hours to read out their names) and see the horrendous photos of starving children and not attach any blame to Israel.

Sadly, there will be people using the conflict as a cover to spread their antisemitic views but it isn’t rational to believe that everyone who disagrees with the actions of an incredibly right wing government who have made some pretty terrifying remarks about the people of Gaza are ‘blinded by hatred’.

Firstly, tell the UN to distribute the food and secondly, tell Hamas to stop bombing the depots and the civilian population.

Rubbish. It absolutely is not “hatred towards the Jewish people “. Many Jewish people would say the same as I do. It’s hatred towards the actions of people carrying out atrocities such as this.

anniegun · 24/07/2025 15:03

Israel's government is conducting genocide with the tacit and (in some cases) explict support of the West including the UK government. If it was another country we would have applied sanctions and arrest warrents by now. Instead we have pointless hang wringing and business as normal

She also seems to think that starving Palestinians is a battle of good vs evil ie the starving Palestinians are evil so one can only presume in her mind deserve to starved. It's worrying that such extremist views exist within the UK.

What a load of crap.

Hamas is evil, so are its collaborators and supporters.

Is that clear enough for you?

Eviebeans · 24/07/2025 16:22

I realise that mine is a very simplistic view but I cannot understand why people are seemingly okay with allowing this to continue. There are horrific pictures on the news, politicians make long speeches condemning the situation and yet still nothing changes

I knew this rhetoric would start being posted today when I heard it from an Israeli government spokesperson on C4 news last. The absolute arrogance to blame the UN for this, do they think we all came down in the last shower.

I’m not sure what your source is but this link doesn’t work. A link that hopefully does work suggests Israel are playing at least a part in the current aid problems. Hopefully Israel are keen to save the lives of children and do whatever they can to stop them from starving. It would very upsetting if they weren’t at least trying to help. It would be outright disturbing if they were killing people trying to get aid.

Gaza latest: UN says 6,000 lorries' worth of aid ready to enter Gaza and urges Israel to allow access

The UN's humanitarian agency warns only a "trickle" of aid is getting into Gaza - Israel says 800 trucks are inside Gaza waiting for collection.

I was wondering why this was suddenly the excuse du jour. Makes sense now.

It was predictable, very quiet last night as the "talking points/explanations" hadn't been issued yet, then a flood of similar sounding excuses. It has been the pattern for the last 19 months when inconvenient truths come out.

Martymcfly24 · 24/07/2025 16:43

Absolutely I watched the interview with David Mercer with Sky News and it was like reading some posters here.

Takes absolutely no responsibility for Israels role in this.

Kakeandkake · 24/07/2025 16:51

All this time the Israeli government have criticised the UN's aid model in distributing aid and have gone out of their way to abolish it and replace it with the incompetent and failed GHF model. The same model that the UN and other agencies warned would lead to a catastrophic situation in Gaza which is precisely what we are seeing now.

And now Israel have the audacity to blame the UN for their failures? They blocked aid for months and have allowed in a trickle after being threatened by the EU but somehow it's the UN's fault now.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 24/07/2025 17:48

They will have been taking lessons from Trump. Netanyahu wasn’t grinning from ear to ear for nothing, when he went to America recently.

Gershwin Baskin, the highly experienced chief hostage negotiator for Israel, said in Jerusalem today that that the war could be stopped now and troops taken out within 2 weeks, but that Netanyahu does not want it. That his survival depends on continuing the war ( Channel 4 tonight).

GentleSheep · 24/07/2025 20:00

Chuck Holton (US ex-military reporter) has just been inside Gaza and there is masses of food stacked up. The UN isn't distributing it because they refuse to work with the IDF because then, according to them, they'd be 'taking sides'! Although they work with Hamas and that is apparently OK!

Loads of tinned food stacked up out in the fierce heat - it won't last long.

At the end of the day, all Hamas have to do is survive, just like the Taliban in Afghanistan. Then they can start again, and they will. My feeling is that no matter what Israel do right now, ultimately the threat against them as a nation will continue, if anything this war has escalated it. The amount of hatred against the nation of Israel will continue, sadly, and as a result there's a load of propaganda being circulated to put Israel in a bad light, or worse light.

The same Chick Holton who is a war correspondent for a far right American TV network. A network that took over a month to declare Biden as president, and spent the intervening time pedaling conspiracy theories.

Anyway, he was allowed into Gaza by the IDF and describes how he was embedded with the troops and got to talk with a 'public affairs guy'.

Not exactly unbiased independent reporting then 😂

Stop and engage your brain for a second. Why would the UN do that? Why would you not listen to what they themselves have to say rather than some bloke named Chuck.

Talking about propaganda whilst feeding right into it. Nonsense post.

You have an issue with journalists embedding with the IDF?

Who else are they supposed to embed with, Hamas?

You really don’t know why the UN would do that?

I think you’re the one who needs to engage your brain, hun.

The desperation now that journalists are in Gaza and they’re not repeating the narrative you want is palpable.

Which kind of journalist would you believe?
