How is forced starvation allowed?

1000 replies

Tinycatnoise · 23/07/2025 22:28

The top story in the BBC right now is the starvation of Gazans by Israel. The images are horrifying and not dissimilar to seeing those images of concentration camps in Nazi Germany. I cried seeing those and am crying now. I am sure someone will claim antisemitism because of this statement, but anyone looking at these images of starving children would agree.

How is this still going on? I feel like we are watching a genocide take place that the world has turning a blind eye to. The daily shooting by Israel of people trying to get aid too is just barbaric. If nothing is being done to stop this, what is the next horror that will unfold in the world that people will just accept?

The evidence for what?

The evidence that banning baby formula harms babies?

Oh dear, maybe I should have been clearer.

WHERE’S

Ha ha first Stupid, then the catch all Hun!!!!

Finally "angry large letters" that'll show em!!!

The formula is taken from them, not when they cross into Gaza but when they enter the Hospital.....

Are you posting in good faith? i'm not sure you are.

The one who denied ever seeing any sign of Hamas in Gaza at all.

Yeah, very credible.

Good try but I think what was said is “she didn't know of any Hamas militia within the Nasser Hospital.” Which may be true or may be false. If she is lying it is most likely because Israel are happy to bomb hospitals and she was doing what Israel and Hamas should be doing which is protecting innocent people from further harm. Not because she’s a covert member of Hamas who is now operating in London.

They shouldn’t and haven’t been,

The desperation to have to twist my words is clear, hun.

Explain what you really mean then, because all I’ve read is so far is you and (thankfully only 1/2 others) trying to justify the horrific images of Mohammed Xakariya as Hamas propoganda and that he is ‘only’ starving because he’s disabled.

The facts are:

  • Gaza is in famine conditions and it’s man-made
  • Israel has blocked baby formula and essential nutritional aid
  • Aid is being deliberately suppressed
  • Starvation is a war crime

These are documented facts from international bodies, medical professionals, and human rights organisations. The starvation of babies is not incidental- it’s a predictable and documented outcome of policies blocking aid, including formula.

Did this baby not have the right to baby formula either?

I would love to know how banning baby formula from entering a country WASN’T targeting babies.

It's insane the knots people will tie themselves in. Poor baby Mohammad is apparently now just a victim of people using his starvation as propaganda. That's the harm Mohammad has come to according to some, not that the deliberate denial of aid into Gaza by Gaza has meant that predictably he and the rest of the most vulnerable people in Gaza are suffering the most. No it's people taking his photo to raise awareness that is harming the poor boy.

There are new lows being reached on board every single day.

  • Baby formula has been confiscated by Israeli authorities at border crossings.
  • A US doctor reported Israeli forces removed baby formula from her suitcase at Allenby Crossing.
  • Gaza hospitals, including major paediatric centres, have run out of infant formula.
  • At least 66 children have died from hunger and dehydration- many of them infants.
  • Aid groups confirm that baby formula and other infant essentials are routinely denied entry at Israeli-controlled crossings.
  • No verified evidence shows Hamas hoarding or blocking baby formula — the obstruction occurs at the border.

They actually don’t help themselves! I feel a bit sorry for them that they’re even arguing about this?!

It’s incredibly depressing really, on top of an already desperate situation. I’m always hoping to better understand the viewpoint of people who are so staunchly pro Israel when these posts come up as I like to have as much info as possible to inform my own opinion but some (not all!) of the comments and lines of argument from that group have really shocked me and it’s hard to have constructive discussion with people who are so closed off to any evidence or suggestions from another perspective.

No one said he is "just" a victim of people using his starvation as propaganda though? He is also a victim of his specialist baby formula not being available in Gaza at the moment. This is partly the fault of Israel for withholding humanitarian aid, partly the fault of Hamas for triggering this current war in the first place and for sometimes stealing humanitarian aid.

What some of us find cynical and disgusting is people using his suffering for propaganda purposes. Why is it propaganda? Because they are posting his image without any explanation that he is a disabled child with complex dietary needs that are not being met.

His situation is tragic enough - his photos could have been published and people would have felt desperately sorry for him and his family. The outlets didn't need to lie by omission and pretend he was a child without complex medical needs and that is the explanation for why he is starving while the rest of his family aren't.

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 27/07/2025 16:05

Aid has been blocked from entering Gaza by Israel since March. As a result of this, Mohammed (who is disabled) is starving to death…

….But apparently the problem is NOT the fact that Mohammed is starving (due to the blocking of aid by Israel)…

BUT that the media is publishing pictures of Mohammed starving… which makes Israel look bad…

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 27/07/2025 16:07

I have lots of images of other babies and children who have starved to death, who DON’T have complex dietary needs @Twiglets1

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 27/07/2025 16:09

thousands of babies in Gaza, not just those with complex needs, are starving due to the blockade.

Humanitarian agencies- including UNICEF and Médecins Sans Frontières- have stated clearly: baby formula, medical equipment, and food are being blocked or confiscated by Israel, even from the suitcases of doctors.

No, that's not the point

Sharing images of starving children is not propaganda. It’s documentation of a humanitarian emergency.

This boy is one of thousands of children suffering in Gaza due to extreme hunger and lack of baby formula, food, and medical care.

His medical condition may make him more vulnerable, but he is NOT AN OUTLIER.

The UN, Save the Children, and WHO have all reported babies starving to death, including previously healthy infants. His image represents a wider truth, not a distortion of it.

Calling it propaganda implies that the suffering is exaggerated or manipulated. But this isn’t speculation- it’s a well-documented crisis. His image forces the world to confront a reality that would otherwise be ignored.

What’s actually cynical is demanding silence or sanitised language about starvation in the middle of a man-made famine. That’s not protecting dignity- that’s suppressing truth.

Such a long string of comments because one person says they can't see what is wrong with this boy being used for propaganda purposes ... then a whole load of others wade in each trying to outdo each other in getting indignant about different things to distract from the original point.

The photo is exploitative, of that I'm sure. Thank you for pointing it out because the truth does matter.

thousands of children are starving as a result of Israel’s blockade- that’s an indisputable fact.

When does photo journalism of war zones cross over into exploitation? I’d always thought of it as merely showing the reality of what’s going on somewhere. Yes, the photos may be used by one or other side to rally support/outrage but the photos may being shared by the media is surely just journalism?
