European Commission President days Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Israel has right to defend itself

"European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said she told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best on Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said that she agreed with Netanyahu in a telephone call that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, without any question."

Von der Leyen has previously criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that Iran's non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog meant Israel "has the right to defend itself".

"Iran is the principal source of regional instability," she added."

Putin, a strong allie of Iran has yet to speak out on the Iran-Israel conflict.

"As of Friday afternoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin was yet to directly weigh in on Israel’s overnight attacks on military, nuclear and other targets in Iran, though his spokesman Dmitry Peskov did speak out. In his statement, Peskov avoided blaming Israel explicitly, saying Russia is concerned and condemns “the sharp escalation” of tensions between Isael and Iran."

Iran's allies:

"Iran’s key allies include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi movement in Yemen, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, and some militias in Iraq including the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF; also called al-Hashd al-Shaabi)."

Maybe looking at the allies of Iran might show why Putin has said little.

Syria, a previous close ally of Iran has its own problems.

So China. Risk world trade to side with Iran?

I hope regime change can happen in Iran and the unknown is whether any opposition can organise itself within Iran. One question is how the governance of Iran will be eroded in the following days and it's result.

Their list of allies should include a few Mumsnetters who are so keen to criticise Israel they are even defending Iran, “the principal source of regional instability”.

Although hopefully they're not armed and radicalised 👀....just angry mothers as Quentin Tarantino might say.

Haha wonder if he had Mumsnet in mind 😜

It’s unfortunate but not surprising that Iran have called for an ‘Islamic army’
I wonder if the ‘100,00’ asylum seekers would lay down their lives for the country they seek refuge in.

Straighthairday · 16/06/2025 15:48

Iran leadership is like a middle American doomsday cult. They are despotic and willing to inflict any harm on any population including their own.

Isreal’s leadership is not far behind them in terms of the harm they are willing to commit but they limit atrocities to populations outside of their own which is the only difference I can see between them, democracies don’t commit genocide.

Two wrongs make two wrongs,

Well Iran seems to have plenty of supporters on MN.

Do they? I'm yet to see one. Many are concerned about the innocent civilians caught up in this and whether the most effective approach is being followed, but that's not the same as supporting the Iranian regime is it?

It leads to the same outcome doesn't it? Iran thinking they didn't have to comply with their nuclear non-proliferation obligations because no one was showing them that they did.

Most lesbians I know can't be arsed with the politics of Pride events anymore and being accused of discrimination or a phobia against one group or another.

We seem to have come full circle in history where "bulk standard / regular/ run of the mill, normal lesbians" don't feel comfortable going to a Pride event because they are "just" lesbians.

I know, my mate (lesbian) hates pride with a passion. She says since LGB added other letters it’s not the same.

Have you see what happens when a government like this is toppled and replaced? Afghanistan rings a bell? I can already feel this is gonna play out great for the world.

EasternStandard · 16/06/2025 19:14

Thanks for this

Hagr1d · 16/06/2025 19:50

Who decides who should get nuclear weapons? If some countries are allowed then all of them should be. Is there evidence that Israel also comply with nuclear non-proliferation?

Iran also has a right to defend itself.
Ditto Palestine. And Lebanon and everyone else that Israel keeps bombing in the name of "self defence." Who decided that Israel was morally superior than everyone else? You can condemn Oct 7th and also condemn what the Israeli gov is doing. Two things can be true at once. I personally believe that the Israeli gov are hypocrites and that their leadership has lost sight of the hostages in pursuit of more power.

BN has been looking for an excuse to attack Iran for decades. It hasn't been proven that Iran actually have a nuclear weapon and the whole thing sounds like when we bombed Iraq for having "weapons of mass destruction". (The weapons that never existed) Call me cynical but I'm starting to wonder whether this is just more of the same. It is a convenient pre text to attack Iran. What are the chances that in 20 years time there will be an enquiry that discovers there weren't actually any nuclear weapons?

As for getting rid of their leadership - we should know better - power vacuums are never good, maybe it is better to stick with the devil you know..

HellsBalls · 16/06/2025 19:58

Or it might be better to get rid of the Iranian regime who have vowed genocide on Israel?
Iran has been kidnapped by the Islamist fundamentalists, who fund terrorism across the region and support Russia.
Time to say goodbye to them really. Netanyahu is a hero.

Twiglets1 · 16/06/2025 19:59

What a childish way of looking at things: If some countries are allowed nuclear weapons then all of them should be.

This isn't sports day in the playground.
