European Commission President days Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Israel has right to defend itself

"European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said she told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best on Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said that she agreed with Netanyahu in a telephone call that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, without any question."

Von der Leyen has previously criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that Iran's non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog meant Israel "has the right to defend itself".

"Iran is the principal source of regional instability," she added."

BTW I agree with the EU president that Iran shouldn't have a nuclear bomb and her opinion that diplomacy is the best path forward.

I also fully agree with her that diplomacy is the best way forward.
The Israeli regime has just made is sure that the mullahs find reasons to either hold on or come back eventually.
Exactly like it happened in Afghanistan after we have hundreds of British lives there. It’s so depressing!

You still haven’t answered any of my questions.

By saying that Israel is a true democracy, do you mean to say Israeli people have backed the genocide, ethnic cleansing and land grab in Gaza and hence are equally culpable?

Oh god. OK. I'll bite.

Yes its a democracy. BN didn't get a proper majority, so formed a coalition, bringing some awful characters in that very few Israelis voted for. Its complicated. Remember the uk coalition of Conservatives/ Liberal Dems? Similar.

And no, of course by voting in the current administration they were not voting for genocide, land grabing, ethnic cleansing. People have different thoughts on things. Not everyone supports everything that their government does. Surely you know this? And no of course not equally culpable. In the same way that every Gazan is not to be held culpable for the heinous atrocities of Hamas on October 7. As always in war, ordinary citizens pay the price for top level decision making.

Is nuance completely beyond you?

Israel can’t even dream to do land grab in Iran because it is next to impossible! Otherwise, the murderous regime of Netenyahu would definitely have attempted this.
However, they are doing plenty to destabilise the region for their backers and sowing seeds of hatred and revenge for generations to come.

I’m not sure that even Israel could make their neighbours hate them even more. The mere existence of Israel at all stirs up hatred for generations.

Nowayyousure · 17/06/2025 12:32

Whatsinanamehey · 17/06/2025 12:20

@Nowayyousure what do you make of the reports coming out today that US intelligence believed Iran was years away from gaining a nuclear weapon? Not months away as Netanyahu claimed and used as justification to attack Iran right now.

If they are years away then perhaps no action was needed now to slow down the nuclear programme. However, there are other reports that say they have 60% enriched uranium. I wouldn't know which is true. What I do know is I'd be concerned if Iran had nuclear weapons. I'm concerned with the "we've got them why shouldn't Iran have them" going around social media like the latest idiotic soundbite.

There is of course the fact that Iran funds terrorist groups and their various attacks so needs stopping from that. Hezbollah, Hamas, The Houthis and others. None do anything good for their people just hate others and cause destruction. What good are they. Looking into each terrorist organisation funded by Iran they are pretty awful to their own people let alone attacks on Israel.

You said in your previous post that people in the Middle East will now be thinking that after attacking Iran “land grabbing” Israel will be coming for them next, and now you’re saying Israel can’t even dream to do “land grab” in Iran? So which one is it?

The poster contradicts themselves. Land grab, then not land grab. I'm not sure they know themselves. Iran doesn't border Israel so to land grab would be very difficult 🙄

It’s both.
Israel can’t dream of a land grab in Iran due to the terrain, the population, the whole logistics. It’s impossible.
They are small time criminals who were grabbing lands from poor Palestinians for decades and were constantly just being given slaps on the wrist which only emboldened them.
Now with Trump on scene, people like Putin and Enetenyahu have direct protection so they have become more ambitious.

However, mid eastern nations neighbouring Israelite occupied regions are the ones who would really be seeing their options now. That is what Netenyahu has unleashed.

Amplepombear · 17/06/2025 12:39

Israeli, not Israelite*.

So you’re saying other Middle Eastern countries will attempt land grab now? Why mention “land grab” in Tehran then?

I merely highlited how you are not worrying how much anguish there is in the region seeing as the blatant land grab and genocide of Palestinians has gone unpunished.
And I highlighted you don’t seem to care about them so what is the pattern here. I think I may have hit a nerve there. Apologies for that.

I get your points, I just don't think bombing Iran right now, especially when Trumps appointed intelligence official said in March that Iran is "not building a nuclear weapon" and the country's supreme leader "has not authorised the nuclear weapons program that he suspended in 2003" was the right think to do.

This stinks of Netanyahu's agenda to ensure his political survival. Conveniently the war in Gaza, the humanitarian catastrophe and failed new aid mechanism, the growing dissent from his own government at home and even the plight of the hostages have all been put on the back foot. I'm sure that suits Netanyahu just fine.

Not enough anguish in the region to open their borders and let in the Gazans though.

And to add that it was reported today as said above that US intelligence concluded very recently, that Iran was years away, not months away.

Europe already knows this, hence the advocacy for diplomacy from their side. Their hands are bound though because Trump is openly protecting Putin as per Zelensky so Europe is at a weak point. Trump and Netenyahu have really chosen their timing, haven’t they? Which makes me wonder how long have they been planning this for?

Nowayyousure · 17/06/2025 12:56

Amplepombear · 17/06/2025 11:45

Is it? Are you saying the people of Israel have elected a war criminal who has an arrest warrant on his person by the ICC? And who is responsible for genocide and ethnic cleansing not to mention land grab from Palestinian people as per evidence from several international organisations? Are you saying Israeli people elected a government several of whose ministers were about ot be banned in the UK due to their extremist ideologies right before Netenyahu launched this illegal war?

Are you saying all of this?

I'm sure the poster can answer for themselves. However, it is clear that they didn't say any of what you are suggesting.

But they did. They said Israel is a true democracy. So only one of these things can be true: either all Israeli people are behind a genocidal war criminal wanted by the ICC, OR he is doing it while ignoring what his people want, meaning it is not a democracy and it is a regime.
So which one is it?

I believe the UK Government was just about to ban his cabinet ministers for their ideology right before Netenyahu started this. That is how credible his elected government is.

Fair enough, we have different opinions on that. I don't like Netanyahu and can't wait for a new government to be elected moving forward. Its also difficult to know where trump is. One minute he's shouting at Iran to stop otherwise hell will be unleashed, another moment spurring the conflict onwards. I do think that Israel is doing the dirty work that the US may want by weakening Iran. Might be right, might be wrong. They've certainly weakened Hezbollah and Hamas, both funded by Iran.

OP posts:
Nowayyousure · 17/06/2025 13:13

Let's try to help.

Democracy is elected by the people, not all people, some of the people, it might be first past the post, so many people might not have voted for the leader.

Some of those people agree with what you are doing, others won't. They will oppose you.

You have elections every so often to change leaders, or keep the same ones (depending on results of votes). In the UK we vote every 4 or 5 years, unless a government stands down or is given a no confidence vote.

A regime doesn't have elections. For example Iran doesn't have elections. But iran is a bit different, its a theocracy, that means it has a supreme leader.

Sometimes eg in Gaza elections took place a long time ago, because the terrorist leaders didn't want to give people the change to change their leaders. Therefore these terrorist leaders continue to govern.

Does this help a bit 🤔

Well it appears mumsnet is ok with you saying ‘is it because they are white’
How about you don’t assume it maybe to do with skin colour and understand genocide is happening elsewhere too and the majority is religion based persecution. In some countries in the Middle East even atheism is punishable.
Why would anyone think any of this is about skin colour. It’s not relevant.
No nerve hit by the way. I despise religion not skin colour

Whatsinanamehey · 17/06/2025 13:14

@Nowayyousure Trump is too unpredictable. He's probably happy by this attack because it will put him in a better negotiating position without doing any of the dirty work himself. The whole region is very volatile though and it might not end up playing out how he wants it too, in the short or long run.

My reply is above. Maybe Google what is a democracy. Have a look. It will give you some pointers on different types of ways countries are governed or ruled over etc.
