Not really surprised but shows the level of New hatred that IS spreading in the US. Scary times and hope nothing like that happens here.

Washington DC shooting: Two Israeli embassy staff killed in attack near Jewish museum

The man and woman were shot while leaving an event focused on helping Gazans at the Capital Jewish Museum.

Oh my god, I'm glad I'm not targeted because of conflict where my family originated.

Yeah sorry, reminds me of the poster who takes her kids on demos and talks to pro-pal holocaust survivors to show them not all Israelis are evil.
We all have blind spots, stream of consciousness exposes them.
I loved it when Tim Minchin said 'opinions are like arseholes, everyone has them, but unlike arseholes you should regularly examine yours.' that will make some people familiar with my posts implode I'm sure.

Too right.

quantumbutterfly · 24/05/2025 11:09

About the arseholes...or the implosions?

About the arseholes...or the implosions?

Both! But I dont want to think about it too much as neither are pleasant images 😃

If it's trending on social media watch your step.
OTOH some people will find something else to target you for, faith, politics, skin colour...if you tick several of those boxes you may need to become a bigger bastard than your enemy, until your enemy finds some like-minded mates, then you'll have to find some like-minded mates.........you can extrapolate how this ends.

This is very disingenuous. Noone is shutting down discussion. We are asking for discussion that is fact based and that is not rooted in antisemitic tropes. It would in fact be an opening up of discussion without the need to be derailed by going off on tangents. In a group of people who claim to care about the middle east I would expect to be able to refer to blood libel, in the knowledge that people have that level of basic knowledge.

What you expect is neither here nor there.

I expect people to have a basic level of humanity and care when children are starving in their thousands and the country next to them is deliberately depriving them of food.

But I cant expect everyone to care on here and quite a few don't

CheshireCat1 · 24/05/2025 11:49

Two more innocent, young lives lost, perhaps we should all take a step back, in quiet reflection and say a prayer for the young couple, their families and all other innocents effected these in current conflicts. May they all rest in peace.

QueenOfHiraeth · 24/05/2025 11:59

mouthpipette · 23/05/2025 23:40

Imagine two headlines:
"Young couple murdered by radicalised pro-Palestine extremist" or
"Two Israeli embassy staff murdered by radicalised pro-Palestine extremist"
The first sounds more personal and shocking, the second more political. I question if this is coincidence or evidence of media bias @QueenOfHiraeth

The second one is far better. It contains more relevant information. Any decent editor would chose the second.

I have no knowledge or experience of being an editor but, to my mind, the second headline, while containing more factual information, leads the reader to an assumption that their employment at the Israeli embassy was a factor in their killing where it was not and they were murdered solely because of being at an event at the Jewish Museum

You have no justification for saying people on here don’t care about children being malnourished or starving.

Not one person has said that or thought that, to my knowledge.

Fair enough.

I'll do my own research.

I'll investigate into why thinking it's a bad thing Israel withholding aid to a starving population and using airstrikes to kill children is "tapping into" an antisemitic trope of Jewish people taking the blood of babies for rituals.

It’s reasonable to say that Israel was withholding aid because they were.

However, it’s not reasonable to say they were “using air strikes to kill children” because that makes it sound like the aim of the air strikes was to kill children when it wasn’t. Israel is at war with Hamas so the aim of the air strikes is to kill as many Hamas fighters as possible but very sadly, many children are getting killed in the war too.

I know - even on a website particularly aimed at parents & grandparents it is often assumed that to be pro Israel is to be pro the children of Gaza being starved or killed.

That's absolutely true.

I agree, it's very frustrating.

And this is precisely where the modern blood libel comes into play. Twisting the purpose of the military action against Hamas, into an active desire to kill children (or specifically babies) taps into the trope of Jews as baby killers. I really cant understand why this is so hard to see.

None so blind as those that will not see, as they say.

Odras · 24/05/2025 15:20

@SharonEllis i do think the Israeli administration (not Jews - not even Isreali citizens) are trying to kill children. I think there is enough evidence to say that they have targeted civilians of all ages. Both directly via air strikes and guns and indirectly via starvation and disease. They are aiming to reduce the whole population and make life so intolerable for the survivors that they will agree to leave. Again by making life intolerable, they will kill people indirectly.

And an awful lot of people are getting worried about this hence the condemnation now from Israeli allies. It is not anti semitism

Whatsinanamehey · 24/05/2025 15:36

I really disagree and just because it's what some people think doesn't mean they are correct. They bombed the house of doctor this morning killing her nine children. Their burnt charred bodies were brought to the hospital where she was treating other patients. This was a direct attack, why are some of you so unwilling to see that children are being targeted? Netanyahu and their government has stated their aims to cleanse and conquer Gaza.

ScarlettOYara · 24/05/2025 15:39

I'm not sure how the Israelis knew there were babies in the house?
Don't get me wrong, this has gone on far too long and there is too much bloodshed, but all this targeting babies accusation - what's the evidence?

Why did they bomb her house then? That's even worst if they didn't know and just go around bombing houses not knowing who is inside.

These were three of her innocent young children murdered today.

@Whatsinanamehey why are you asking me? I have no idea.
I'm asking you if you think that the Israelis are just targeting babies? Or is the bombing more like you get in other wars?

Whatsinanamehey · 24/05/2025 15:48

Like how they have been bombing entire residential buildings on top of families. Those who survive are distressed because they can hear some of their family members making noises from under the rubble but no way to save them. How can you see all of this and say but they aren't targeting children.

The difference with many other wars being that the army and government ((in this case Hamas) dont embed themselves in the civilian population as a matter of course.

They are clearing large areas of Gaza so they can take it over to implement Trump's plan. They are using whatever means they can and killing whoever comes in the way to do this. Netanyahu is telling the world his plan and some of you are still in denial.

Some of you? Do you mean me?
I'm denial about nothing. I have no idea how any military operation could deliberately and only target babies, but perhaps you know more than me about strategic warfare.

Odras · 24/05/2025 15:52

@ScarlettOYara

Here’s some of the evidence.

Interviews with doctors who claimed that they were treating children with sniper wounds and after drone attacks is one.

The fact that more children were killed in Gaza in four months than in all global conflicts in the previous four years.

The tactic of starvation targets children because they are the first to suffer and die

The targeting of the water system and sewage system targets children as they are among the most vulnerable to disease

The use of the Where’sDaddy AI system that follows Hamas fighters to their family homes (which are bombed)
