Hamas and Gaza celebrates

Hillel Nueur, International human rights lawyer, writer, Executive Director of United Nations Watch writes: 'Never before in history has a side claimed that they suffered a genocide and at the same time that they won the war they had started.'

If you read only a handful of messages on social media today and watch the news, people in Gaza are celebrating and Hamas state they will continue (their barbarity) until Israel is eradicated. I won't repost these as anyone can find them easily.

Of course you've heard it for 15 months, because you've been saying Israel started it for 15 months.

Oh no, I’ve been saying it for longer than 15 months. Because this didn’t start on 7-10 for me

Dulra · 16/01/2025 17:30

Hamas triggered the current conflict but conflict in the region did not start on October 7th.

EasternStandard · 16/01/2025 17:33

taking into account that Israel started this war

This should be Hamas started this war

No sorry I can’t agree. This very specific war was created on October 7th when Hamas entered Israel and killed people and took hostages. Israel then unleashed retribution to a level the world has probably never seen.

We aren’t talking in historical context. This specific war was started by Hamas. I underline the word started.

Yea you can argue they were oppressed etc, but the current conflict was specifically created by Hamas and their actions on Oct 7.

Thank you for this clear explanation of the current situation.

I agree they need to address their responsibility for the devastation in Gaza but my guess is that they won't and as soon as they can re arm they will do so and continue to fire rockets into Israel. It's a complete tragedy and there is no trust between anyone at all.

You've only got read the Hamas Charter to know this will never end in peace.

MissyB1 · 16/01/2025 17:51

There are no “winners”. The Palestinian civilians have suffered horrendously, the true death toll will be far higher than current estimations. Whole families wiped out, many thousands of orphans (many of whom have lost limbs as well as their parents). No schools or hospitals left. Babies being frozen to death or starved to death.

Israeli families still without their loved ones, no one knows how many hostages are still alive. And Israel’s reputation tarnished for decades to come I suspect. Some of the Israeli Government may end up in court trials for war crimes.

We don’t need to worry about who is claiming a “win”. Let’s just pray the ceasefire happens, and that it holds.

EasternStandard · 16/01/2025 16:49

Yes I’m aware, it was covered on BBC WS

Very moving

I think as much as I can’t stand Hamas talking as the op outlines it’s better to focus on happy children celebrating

Edited

The children singing and dancing even though they have lost everything and are still in flimsy tents, was very moving. They just want to live.

I wonder how many people have actually read the charter or understand that the more recent charter, which is less overtly antisemitic, does not supersede the original.

mouthpipette · 16/01/2025 18:01

They want all their hostages back, understandably and don't trust Hamas.
@LetThereBeLove

Israel could have had many more of the hostages back 15 months ago, had they chosen to negotiate. Instead they opted for a vengeful and brutal retaliation, that apart from death, destruction and misery for tens of thousands, has achieved little or nothing and unless the root causes of this conflict are addressed, Hezbollah, Hamas or some iteration of those, will rise again.

You appear not to remember that 100 hostages were released during a staggered truce in November 23 if memory serves me correctly. There have been countless fruitless attempts to get the remaining hostages back. Hamas are to blame here as they kidnapped innocent people on 7 October 2023 as well as massacring 1200 others including many Israelis living on the border who were pro peace with their Palestinian neighbours. There is no longer any trust and who can blame them.

Who are you directing these questions at? Most people on here are aware that Hamas are a terrorist organisation. I am not sure why you'd think anyone would be swayed by what is or isn't in their charter. They have made no secret of it. Looking for peace in Gaza and supporting an independent Palestinian state does not mean you are supportive of Hamas or supportive of their actions.

Not to mention that the pro peace Israelis living near the border had employed Palestinians who used that access to help Hamas attack them. Their trust was completely betrayed.

If we are going by numbers, then Palestinians have for more reason to not trust the Israeli government when entire bloodlines have been murdered.

The peaceniks on the border invited Palestinians into their homes and gave them employment. The Palestinians who they had invited into their homes to work then gave information to Hamas to attack them, murdering entire families, raping women, and taking hostages.

Which is terrible no argument about it. The IDF forced the Palestinians to leave their homes and go to areas where they told them that they and their children would be safe and then repeatedly bombed them and murdered them there in the thousands.
Both sides have valid reasons to mistrust.

I’m glad you say this. I feel more hopeful for peace atm due to this deal but clear statements like this help.

There’s a lot of pain on both sides and healing for people and imo careful language helps

Children are celebrating in Gaza and a new US President means there’s this chance. I think if we focus on those children we / they have a chance.

From the comments you've made on this site, it's very clear you hold Israel and Israeli citizens fully accountable, for this conflict and for the Palestinians quality of life. I'm not here to dispute that.

But until you start holding Palestinians accountable, for the broad support they've given Hamas with regard to its stance on Israel, murdering of Jews and martyrdom then this conflict will continue to go on in perpetuity.

Something has to change in the mindsets of people in both Israel and Gaza in order for there to be peace. But until Hamas are removed by the Palestinian population in Gaza then they are equally responsible for their own misfortunes.

I've seen footage of Hamas now re-donning their military clothing after hiding and going incognito during the conflict.
I fear that there will be a period of quiet before it all flares up again, because nothing has been resolved at all.

Hopefully it won’t

The mark of absolutely cowards and the worst of humankind. Hiding behind human shields and bravely popping on their uniforms at the first hint of peace.

I truly hope for all the innocents on both sides the truce holds but it seems so unlikely Sad

Have you any idea when the last elections took place in Gaza??

The last elections were in 2005. However, recent polls showed the Palestinian people strongly in favor of Hamas.

What recent polls? I would seriously question the ethics of any poll conducted in Gaza in the past year. Who conducted it and how?
