I think a lot of people believe that, when the few Jews left liberated after the Holocaust, the world went “My god what happened to you is awful! Here we will help you”. They didn’t. Jewish people were still fiercely hated the world over, their homes had been taken away (yet again) and no one wanted them. The movement to reclaim Israel, that IS their homeland, had started long before WW2 when pogroms were in force throughout the world. Finally, after everything they’d been through, after being starved, tortured and having to wheel their dead relatives around in wheelbarrows, they fairly and legally reclaimed a place they could finally live in free of antisemitism. A place that was sparse, had high poverty and low literacy rates and was already occupied by a good population Jewish people and full of kibbutz.
