Why was my post deleted? Is saying what is in the bible forbidden now in here? Interesting

I'm guessing it depends on context and intent. Have you tried going on a thread where someone is complaining about their child and suggesting they be taken outside the city gates and stoned to death? If not, maybe you are actually capable of working out appropriate vs. inappropriate use of Biblical narratives and texts.

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2024 12:22

What a weird post @1WanderingWomble Confused

1WanderingWomble · 15/11/2024 12:26

Not really.

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2024 12:27

It really is

1WanderingWomble · 15/11/2024 12:36

Ok, you're entitled to your opinion. Do you agree that not all Bible quotes are universally appropriate?

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2024 12:41

There was nothing inappropriate about what I posted. I have asked MN for clarification.

1WanderingWomble · 15/11/2024 13:18

Ok, hopefully they can clear that up for you.

BarbaraHoward · 15/11/2024 14:28

Not sure I've ever seen you deleted before Jane Grin

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2024 15:01

Oh believe me I have been deleted lots of times @BarbaraHoward, some people can't handle the truth Wink

Kindatired · 16/11/2024 00:11

Well we can keep debating what happened to Jane’s post but will we ever know…..?
The Jewish Chronicle has lost its reputation and is no longer a credible source. The NGO is not a credible source and is linked to Israeli propaganda agents. The school book that had the pictures of Jewish people wearing the wrong hats in 2918 now has them wearing the right hats in the 2024 edition. As for the boy wearing the scarf- he’s probably still there but no one’s noticed because most of the pages of the text books are never opened because there’s already so much on the curriculum that the kids would have to live as multiple avatars of themselves to cover it all.
After 13 years of Catholic school for DS and 8 years of Catholic primary and 6 years of multidenominational secondary for DD, both joined the Jewish Society in college. So fortunately it would appear that not too much damage has been done, even if we had the book with the wrong hat but didn’t notice.
The parent who complained about the text book for secondary schools seems to be on the board of management of the Jewish ethos private secondary school that chose to use the particular text books. She does seem to be in denial about how Palestinians in the occupied territories are treated and this probably shows that it wouldn’t do her daughter any harm to study the content.
Maybe Mr Gvir would like to write the text books for us so we ignorant peasants can all think the right way and have our errors corrected?

Martymcfly24 · 16/11/2024 07:39

Yes @Kindatired I agree. I went down a rabbit hole and read the whole report. There are many examples of good practices and representation in textbooks contained in the report which were not spoken about in the article. Also there is a whole section on one history book calling Auschwitz a "prisoner of war" camp which the author finds minimizes the horrors. However in that chapter the horrors of the Holocaust are repeatedly mentioned so one label is not representing the entire content.

It comes across as quite nitpicky.

Marblesbackagain · 16/11/2024 08:29

@Martymcfly24 I would imagine there could be potentially some rationale of not sharing the horrific and inhumane acts in too much detail?

Potentially for some who may have academic but not emotional maturity due to SEN?

Junior cert can at times be completed by 14 year olds. They may just need a little more maturity and support to engage with the material.

But it is really important to note that anyone can publish anything and call it a book for the exams. There isn't a quality assurance system reviewing them.

But given the context the nitpicking reflects the anxieties of Jewish people living in Ireland and their fears about the rise in anti semitism.
Those fears should be addressed and taken seriously.

Limesodaagain · 16/11/2024 09:06

I’m sure there are ways to address this . But as a teacher I know it is very tricky to get this absolutely right.
History textbooks can be particularly controversial - not just in this respect but also in the wake of other events which shed a light on particular communities- Black Lives Matter etc

But dialogue is important.

Agree. But the damage is done the article is out there and consumed and it makes it easier to dismiss any concerns Ireland has for the genocide in Gaza as antisemitic. It's no coincidence that Ireland is the only European curriculum ever inspected.

Yes those fears need to be addressed as they do in every country but there is no evidence that the Irish school curriculum is adding to this.

VERY weird!! 😬😬😬

Sorry to go back to this but I'm struggling to see what the difficulty is in understanding. The Bible is full of weird things you clearly wouldn't post all over MN. Coming onto a thread about antisemitism to talk about the Jews killing Jesus is an example of a massively inappropriate use of the Bible. So "Oh we can't even share what it says in the Bible 😯" in response to a deletion is as ridiculous as if someone were to start advocating Old Testament punishments and then be surprised it was against talk guidelines, IMO.

I'm not surprised MN aren't engaging with @JaneJeffer because it's literally that obvious tbh.

JaneJeffer · 16/11/2024 11:29

I guess you'll be getting on to all the Christian churches to tell them that what they read out every Easter is inappropriate then @1WanderingWomble?

Tbf that's not how it is phrased. We are taught Jesus was a Jew and Pontius pilate, a Roman official is responsible for his death, with a bit of betrayal of Judas thrown in.

My memory (I stepped back from Catholicism a long time ago) is that Catholics believe Jesus was the Messiah, Jews don't believe he was. We were taught they are wrong Catholics are right (simplifying here) nothing to suggest they're responsible for his death.

JaneJeffer · 16/11/2024 11:38

I mentioned what happened in Matthew 27:15-26 in response to other posts. Obviously I can't post it again but people can look it up if they so wish.

Limesodaagain · 16/11/2024 11:46

Yes - that verse has been used with malicious intent and in anti semitic ways . The line is said by “the people in the crowd “ a specific section of Jerusalem society . The people in that crowd did not represent everyone in Jerusalem. There were many other Jews in the New Testament who do not say these lines. . Jesus ,Our Lady, all the apostles , Mary Magdalene, Joseph of Arimathea Lazarus , Martha, etc etc . The whole cast … ( apart from Pilate) .
Obviously there are good people and malicious people in every race and religion.

mikado1 · 16/11/2024 11:50

Exactly, they were just the people of the area at the tim, as I understood it as a child.
