Fanfic sequel? What would the consequence be if someone called the Torah “fanfic”?

Oh yeah, they’d be accused of antisemitism and the JC would write an article about them.

After seeing this comment, I do not believe this thread was started in good faith.

4 children in school in Ireland. I really don't see the issue with the education they receive. I am very proud of how the the Irish support Palestine and refuse to back down on this. It actually blows my mind that anyone could possibly stand in defence of Israels actions. Let's be honest, we know only too well here what it was like to be abused and oppressed. Our views won't be changing any time soon.

The image in the article is from the Junior. infant Grow in Love . It refers to the story of the crucifixion and how the chief priests offered Judas 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus. This is according to Bible stories .
How is antisemitism to portray them as Jewish? (Genuine question not rhetorical)

As a teacher, when this particular chapter/topic comes up I remind the children that Jesus himself was Jewish, he was the first Christian (Jesus Christ). It's not being anti - Semitic to state that some people disliked Jesus. Those people were in fact Jewish. Everyone in the area at the time was Jewish.

Yep I have discussed that with my older classes.

I may have also told them the chapter on creation was only a story and not real....

What an offensive post and I speak as an atheist!

Nn9011 · 13/11/2024 20:56

Absolutely not. Whilst of course any country will have racism so you can't say no individual has ever been anti-Semitic, it's well understood that Jewishness and Zionism are completely separate.
Ireland is still mostly catholic and most religious schools will teach a little of Judaism, Islam etc.
This is very much the work of the Zionist propaganda machine.

Exactly, and having grown up with this story and Irish text books I always understood this without once thinking badly of Jewish people and also had the horrors of the Holocaust highlighted while studying history.

Separately, I am also proud of our government for its long held support for Palestine. I am a teacher in an extremely diverse school. I have never seen these texts in use.

There is also a Jewish school in Dublin that is state funded with around 100 pupils.

I have taught Judaism as part of the Fifth Class Grow in Love program. Islam is on the Sixth Class program.

Ireland is NOT antisemitic nor would Irish people condone antisemitism to be promoted in their curriculum.
Ireland IS anti genocide, however.

Well put. So well put.

The genocide is unlike any I've seen in my nearly 50 years on the planet. It's horrifying to see and be treated as normal

Mary was Jewish and she is a much loved religious figure here, you only need to see how many Marys are in the phone book. Jesus being Jewish was always painted positively in any religious education I received.

babasaclover · 13/11/2024 21:13

@Dulra indeed. My grandmother was Mary from Southern Ireland. I've never ever heard anyone in Ireland speak badly of Jews in my life and I'm there 3/4 times a year since birth!

So you think the Jewish Chronicle might have got the textbooks somewhere else and pretended they're from Ireland for some reason.

I haven't seen the textbooks so have no idea if the report is factual. The JC have been known to make stuff up. It seems quite the coincidence that this has come up during a smear campaign.

It's been called a mouthpiece for Likudnik propaganda and has moved increasingly right over the years. In the past six years, the JC has had 40 recorded breaches of the IPSO code.

knitnerd90 · 13/11/2024 21:45

I'm not a fan of the JC these days but honestly dismissing all critique as "Zionist propaganda" is equally as tired as calling everything critical of Israel antisemitic.

That picture of "Jews" is an antisemitic caricature. Jews don't wear a tallit gadol outside of services, and 1st century Jews in Roman Palestine didn't look like modern day Hasidic Ashkenazim.

Catholic antisemitism runs deep, and in a country like Ireland with very few Jews, people don't always know how to recognise it.

He was executed by the Romans. Schools don't teach that 'the Jews' killed Jesus, or at least they certainly shouldn't be.

Anyway, to the point of the thread, there are definitely some aspects of the books quoted that are questionable in terms of leaving out context or not providing any balance. Hopefully those elements will be changed. It's not clear how widespread the issue is but it's unacceptable if Jewish children are being subjected to any form of antisemitism.

Martymcfly24 · 13/11/2024 22:02

We don't we teach he was killed by the Romans and Pontius Pilate but he was betrayed by the High Priests who gave Judas the silver and encouraged the crowd to shout "crucify him".

A text book in Ireland has also been called out for caricaturing Irish people in a textbook recently. I think awareness raising is important and highlighting these mistakes so changes can be made is crucial

School book pulled over depiction of Irish family

The schoolbook publisher, The Educational Company of Ireland, has apologised for some content in one of its Junior Cycle curriculum books, adding that upon "closer inspection", it will remove it.

Yes, it sounds like we're in agreement. To say 'the Jews' killed Jesus is offensive and inaccurate, was my point.

If you're in a Catholic school that's what you're supposed to teach them surely! The Catholic church supports evolution.
