that verse has been used with malicious intent and in anti semitic ways
No it hasn't

Tbf that's not how it is phrased. We are taught Jesus was a Jew and Pontius pilate, a Roman official is responsible for his death, with a bit of betrayal of Judas thrown in.

My memory (I stepped back from Catholicism a long time ago) is that Catholics believe Jesus was the Messiah, Jews don't believe he was. We were taught they are wrong Catholics are right (simplifying here) nothing to suggest they're responsible for his death.

Edited

That’s my understanding and I’m still a practicing Catholic.
The situation in the previous centuries has been really troubling because Christians throughout history have sometimes used this section of the Bible to justify persecution of the Jews.
There is no real biblical justification - it’s a distortion of meaning) not that persecution is ever justified) . But malicious people twist the Bible for their own ends

It absolutely has in the past ( not nowadays and not in Irish school books)

JaneJeffer · 16/11/2024 11:54

The point of that passage is to illustrate the forgiveness of Jesus later as he is dying on the cross and asks God to forgive them for they know not what they do.

Limesodaagain · 16/11/2024 11:54

The Catholic Church in the 20th century has worked hard to ensure that verse cannot be twisted and misinterpreted by malicious anti semites .
We are taught that the Jews are our “elder brothers in faith “ ( quote from Pope Benedict)

Oh - I am sorry ( I think I’ve read the wrong bit 😣
But yes - it’s about a proper interpretation done in good faith and without malice to anyone

JaneJeffer · 16/11/2024 11:58

Obviously there will always be people who misinterpret things like they do with my posts Wink

It’s unbelievable and yet not surprising. Ireland’s hostility to Israel is hardly a secret.

A lot of people in Ireland are against the devastation and cruelty that is happening in Palestine. Which is being caused by Israel.

Most people are. And it's not specific to just not liking when Israel do it.

A lot of people in Ireland are also against Russia invading Ukraine.

Nobody likes when a country invades another one.

JaneJeffer · 16/11/2024 11:29

I guess you'll be getting on to all the Christian churches to tell them that what they read out every Easter is inappropriate then @1WanderingWomble?

Oh, do they go and see Jewish people who are discussing their issues with antisemitism and read it out? Because if so I'll happily 'get on' to them about it. I am a Christian, I love the Bible but I have no time for people who misuse it.

Funny how you didn't include any of that then. Although I did enjoy the Monty Python gif.

Hmm
Lisanoonan · 16/11/2024 12:11

I'm I'm Ireland. No one I know is anti semitic.

What they are is anti-war. And they are anti invasion and anti deaths.

And people in Ireland have seen a lot of videos of GAZA showing absolute devastation there.

Can you understand why Jewish people might feel vulnerable?
You might not be aware but there has been a rise in anti semitic attacks.
The Jewish people in Europe should not be feeling vulnerable because of what is happening in the Gaza.

Since the conflict started, I havent heard anyone say one single negative thing about the Jews in Europe.

Have you?

Yes - I have seen and heard of incidents that make the Jewish community in London feel fearful. I can send you examples if you like.
As regards Ireland - perhaps the Jewish community in Ireland are in a better position to judge than me or you?

With respect how do you think the Palestine children undergoing surgery without anesthetic are feeling?

I am not anti anyone, but I am anti insane killing of innocent lives.

Sure . If any of them want to come on here and write about it they can. But other people can also write about it.

The thing is that nearly every human has been through something like this.

Conflicts and wars have happened between so many countries in the past.

We all know what it feels like to get abuse.

I'm irish and I have lived in England. I got a lot of abuse in England for being Irish. Because of the conflict between England and Ireland.

We have all been through abuse for where we are from /our race/ or our religion. Humans like to segregate each other into categories. You just have to keep going.

Limesodaagain · 16/11/2024 12:23

The Muslim community felt very vulnerable in London after 9/11 and 7/7.
The Irish community felt vulnerable in London when IRA activity was at its height. It sometimes felt as if English people assumed all the Irish were IRA supporters.
It’s really not surprising that innocent Jewish citizens feel fearful and marginalised.

Also we can look at how Jewish people are potentially getting some abuse in europe. That's one side of it.

What's going on in Gaza is not the Jewish people in Europe's fault. And no one that I know has said it is

But shouldn't we also look at what's going on in Gaza. Shouldn't we also be saying that that is not right.

What in your opinion, could stop the conflict?

I absolutely agree. Our posts crossed over.
But we do need to reduce tensions in our local communities and make sure everyone feels safe

I wish I knew ?
A change in Israeli government?
Hostage release?

I was actually at a meetup group last week. There was a Russian man and a Ukranian woman in the group. They came to the group separately.

They were chatting away to each other , they were really friendly to each other. It was beautiful.

It reminded me that it is the Government's of these countries that are fighting, not the every day people.

So then why are Jewish pupils moving schools? Why did a parent say that she had seen the book used in her daughter's school?

You seem determined to paint the article as a fabrication and I don't know why.

Almost everything written in the JC is a fabrication

It really isn't, even if you might like it to be.
