Not acceptable in a family environment. There is a time and a place.

Well done to the shopping centre in dealing with this so smoothly:

"A spokesperson for the London shopping centre said: “Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City are busy family-centric destinations and to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all our visitors, we do not facilitate protests within our centres."

Which bit particularly is not acceptable in a family environment? It’s a flag, not actual violence.

It was a protest. This is not allowed in a family environment. People have the right to shop safely without encountering protests.

If you have a problem with it, contact the owners.

It is not allowed by Westfield because it might reduce their profits. That does not make it intrinsically inappropriate behaviour.

Summerinspringtime · 10/07/2024 12:59

I agree with the owners.
It’s their property, and therefore nobody has the right to drape any kind of flag whiteout their permission.

Summerinspringtime · 10/07/2024 13:00

Well yes, there are a business.

TomeTome · 10/07/2024 13:16

It’s nothing to do with it being a “family” environment and everything to do with not wanting to take sides in a political demonstration.

In my experience families particularly those with young children are most horrified by the slaughter and starvation of Palestinians.

I don't know any families with young kids who are more horrified than any other group who might be upset by what you describe.

The protestors were chucked out as they do not want people put at risk in a family environment. They go there to shop peacefully and enjoy themselves, not having to circumnavigate people who go there to break the rules and ignore them.

what a shame the Israeli government doesn’t afford the people of Gaza similar fundamental human rights.

Yes it is a shame that the Hamas administration - the government of Gaza, who do not allow their poor citizens fundamental human rights and attack a country next door knowing full well that they would retaliate.
Go focus your ire on this administration.

no I blame the Israeli government who are committing genocide on an epic scale

the Israeli government are murdering evil men and I hope they get punished appropriately in due course

dont give a fuck about a Palestinian flag over a shopping centre. In fact I think it’s great.

Imagine being offended by a flag, whilst conveniently ignoring that Israel are bombing schools, hospitals and refugee camps.

Finallyloggedin · 10/07/2024 14:19

Well done to the protestors taking time out of their day to remind everyone that there is a genocide taking place right now, live streamed if you can be bothered to watch it.

  • Children either being orphaned or having their bodies blown to smithereens, day after day.
  • Soldiers running over entire families in tanks
  • Two million people being starved to death whilst at the same time being told to go from one area to another and being shot at enroute and bombed when they reach their destination
  • white phosphorous burning peoples skin
  • bombs, dropped on refugees living in tents
  • drones playing the sound of children crying to coax people out and then shooting them dead.

None of that is very ‘family friendly’, in fact it’s significantly less so.

But tell me again about how the big mean flag of a persecuted people whom Israel are trying to ethnically cleanse is troubling you.

MistyFrequencies · 10/07/2024 14:25

"Not acceptable in a family environment???"😂😂.
Do you understand that whole families, whole bloodlines are being wiped out in Gaza by Israeli Genocide and you are here worried about a flag?

Finallyloggedin · 10/07/2024 14:31

Infact I just read this message from Palestine:

”Urgent .. Urgent
The Israeli army declared few minutes ago its intention to ethnically cleanse the whole population of Gaza city trying to force hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to evict their city and their homes.
Netanyahu fascist government never departed from its original goal of ethnic cleansing of the whole population of Gaza Strip.”

Mustafa Burghouti

Perhaps this is why they placed the flag there, to try to draw attention to what is happening in Gaza right now.

TomeTome · 10/07/2024 14:40

@Oystercavity I don't know any families with young kids who are more horrified than any other group that’s interest but as I said in my post I do. I guess we just mix with different people. It’s not unusual for people to empathise and wonder how they would cope given similar situations.

Buddysbunda · 10/07/2024 14:55

Well done to the protesters. They did what they set out to do, to raise awareness and well done to you and the jc for amplifying that! Keeping Palestine in the news is really important.

Martymcfly24 · 10/07/2024 16:47

Great job to the protesters . The fact this thread exists shows they have achieved their mission to get people talking because if it was left up to MSM..

If I was there with my young daughters they know exactly what a Palestinian flag looks like and what is happening. They are draped all over the motorway bridges most Saturdays where I live plus there are houses with them up.

Tell me how British people in a shopping centre caused all of that? Seriously drapping flags over everything isn't the answer.

People are talking all right.

Have you read the comments on The Daily Mail and Telegraph articles every time protests and marches are reported?

Those same people didn't give a toss when hundreds of thousands were killed in Yeman, or other areas.

US2gether · 10/07/2024 17:36

The answer is mediation, ceasefire talks, getting the hostages released, ending terrorist organisations control over innocent people. Push for this.

But hey ho, drap flags and chant and graffiti statues.

Motorway bridges! If a flag drops on cars underneath it could cause a major accident. God these flag placers are idiots.

Of course the answer is mediation and ceasefire talks, which Israel are refusing to seriously take part in, they just want to keep on killing Palestinians, several Israeli government ministers have even said that.

Therefore governments around the world need to put pressure on Israel to stop the mindless killing. Many are doing their best in this area. However, our government and media are keen to turn a blind eye and hush up the genocide of the Palestinians, so that certain MPs can keep on taking their donations from Israeli organisations, among other reasons.

Therefore people are doing anything they can to let people know what is going on. Because if everyone saw what is actually happening in Gaza, I’m sure 90% of the uk population would oppose it.

You won’t read on the bbc how Israel is bombing schools and hospitals and starving everyone, so individuals with a conscience are trying to spread the word so that citizens put pressure on the government to take steps which they could easily take such as:

  • stop selling weapons and parts
  • place sanctions on Israel until the genocide stops
  • join the SA ICJ case
  • recognise the state of Palestine
