The footage coming out of this this absolutely sickening. So many precious children killed. I've never seen anything like it. Poor innocent babies.

It's great that they managed to rescue 4 hostages (though it seems they killed others) but the human cost of that for Palestinians (and potentially other hostages) is absolutely obscene and not acceptable.

'This is what a massacre looks like': Israeli bombardment kills more than 200 in central Gaza

The Al-Aqsa Hospital has been overwhelmed by the dead and wounded arriving following the bombing.

It is heartbreaking. Utterly heartbreaking.

And to think of the US complicity, the aid truck reports... It adds insult to injury.

Reuters also reported a claim that other hostages were killed in the process.

EasterIssland · 08/06/2024 18:56

Seems like US troops might have been involved as well. If true this is a new step from Biden which I hope he pays the consequences for

And the 'humanitarian' pier.

Scirocco · 08/06/2024 18:57

At least Trump would just go "Yay, murdering Muslims, I'm in!" and do it to our faces.

ConnieCounter · 08/06/2024 18:57

Yes it's definitely extremely troubling if those reports are true. I suspect they are.

Don't hold hostages then . They knew what they were doing

Palestinians would have been killed anyway. With or without hostages. That’s why Israel has not accepted a release exchange. Because even with one they’d still continue at their war. So, it doesn’t really matter. Palestinians always die (and some of the hostages)

Hamas and other terrorists knew what they were doing. Innocent civilians died because of the actions of Hamas, the IDF, the US and probably others. There'd be few tears shed over an operation that ended with hostage-takers shot in the head and innocent people saved. A lot of tears are being shed over the innocents massacred in what happened. Please don't trivialise the horrendous price that innocent Palestinians have paid here.

Who is 'they' ?

TomeTome · 08/06/2024 19:16

Children and babies did not know what anyone was doing. Shame on you.

Can you explain how children knew what "they were doing" and even if children did know what Hamas was doing what they were supposed to do about it?

Why is it antisemitic to equate all Jews to the IDF yet completely fine to equate all Palestinians to Hamas? Asking for my dead Christian Palestinian relative killed by the IDF who certainly didn't know what "they were doing" and would have had no control over it even if she did know.

ConnieCounter · 08/06/2024 19:20

I had to start this thread because apparently mentioning the fact that 210 or more people were killed during the same operation is "whataboutery" and shouldn't be discussed on the thread celebrating the release of the 4 hostages.

Such cognitive dissonance is absolutely unbelievable and is really really disturbing.

Absolutely. Thousands of innocent Palestinians - including many children- are just as much victims of Hamas as the Israelis. Hamas doesn’t care about their suffering.

Maybe we should enforce the same rules on this thread as are being enforced on the other one.

If you don't even have the humanity to express sadness or regret that over 200 people were killed this thread isn't for you.

MNHQ have now (rightly) taken down the other thread because people were warned and still couldn’t help themselves.

WhatShallIdo11 · 08/06/2024 19:50

This is a very difficult situation for everyone concerned. I find it appalling that so many innocent people are suffering as it is not their fault but who started this? It was Hamas - if Israel had ignored it, it would have been a green light to Hamas. There are no winners but glad that 4 hostages have been returned to their families

So what does that have to do with the 210 killed by Israel today? I don't understand the point.

@julili what was the warning?

That both antisemitism and Islamophobia were hate speech and that the thread would be removed if posters continued. They did, so MN took it down.

My point is it has nothing to do with those killed so far in this terrible war - not just those killed today BUT should Israel just have accepted their country being invaded and their citizens killed and abducted? What do you think Israel should have done? Accepted it?

Scirocco · 08/06/2024 20:06

@ConnieCounter I was attacked for not being sufficiently performative, lacking humanity and defending myself from personal attacks. I had to report some frankly abusive messages from behind the scenes. It's been painted as people having been mean and unable to be happy for the freed hostages, but actually there was a lot of abuse and bullying attempts stemming from the thread. As I've said elsewhere, I am glad for the innocent people who have been reunited with their loved ones. I am heartbroken for those whose loved ones have been torn from them in the process.

If you're trying to justify today's massacre I've no interest in talking to you.

If you think massacring 210 people today, not to mention the other 36,000+ who have been killed, is reasonable because of what Hamas did there's no point.

I don't think anyone would expect people not to defend themselves when attacked, especially by such a horrific terrorist atrocity. Self-defence is one thing, but death on this scale goes far beyond what was necessary.

Not killed, starved maimed thousands of innocent civilians and children. At this stage the "they started it" and "what are Israel meant to do" are pathetic childish responses.

The point is that Hamas committed a massacre and took hostages. They kept hostages in civilian areas. They embedded themselves in civilian areas. They provoked a war with a nation whose military is capable of crushing them. They did so deliberately. They believe they can win the propaganda war and they don’t care how many lives are lost in the process.

I saw that commenting positively about the physical condition of the hostages or the fact that 200 people died was not being tolerated by some on the thread. So I didn't engage. I'm sorry that you were subject to abuse and bullying.
