Conflict in the Middle East
Parkingt111 · 05/06/2024 12:13

Yes there's currently violence with protestors chanting 'death to arabs'

Humdingerydoo · 05/06/2024 12:28

I am absolutely not defending them, I really can't emphasise that enough, but to pretend this is about Gaza is just not accurate. This is an annual far-right parade. The equivalent of EDL marching on St George's Day. This march and these despicable chants would be happening even if there wasn't a war.

Yes I absolutely agree. My point was this is a wider anti Palestinian policy and Gaza just part of the plan or in the words of the Israeli far right part of the final solution.

@Humdingerydoo yes I know It happens every year
I'm sure one year it was the cause of the last war.
Also it seems these thugs don't differentiate who they attack seeing as they also attacked the times of Israel photographer

Parkingt111 · 05/06/2024 12:31

There's alot of youngsters taking part

The nationalist youths attack journalists to prevent them from filming while a police officer shoves an Arabic photojournalist, who sustains a minor cut on the forehead.

A marcher tries to knock down a Times of Israel reporter’s phone while filming the violence.

Yes exactly. It also shows the Israeli government don't care about deliberate provocation. Despite previous calls to not allow the march to pass through the muslim quarters due to the history of violence there, they still gave it the green light.
To appease the likes of Ben Gvir and his followers knowing there's a likelihood that things will turn ugly.

To deny that this year it isn't about Gaza is also inaccurate though.
This is what one of the organisers of the march had to say

Organizers said that the ongoing war is not just a cause for gloom, but also a realization of the hopes of many on the religious right to reconquer the Gaza Strip.
It [the march] isn’t only about the liberation of the Western Wall and the Old City, it’s also about the liberation of Judea and Samaria [the West Bank], and this year it’s more timely because it’s also about the liberation of the Gaza Strip,” Meir Indor, one of the organizers of the parade, told The Times of Israel.

I thought "the final solution" was a purposeful mistranslation of something that was said last week? Or has someone else actually said that now? Genuine question, not intended as goady or sarcastic.

The purpose of the march isn't an anti-Palestinian one - it's to celebrate the anniversary of the day Jews finally regained access to their holiest site. That was obviously a very big deal for a lot of people. However, on a Venn diagram there would probably be a large overlap of people who wish to celebrate this day by marching and people who hate Palestinians and want to provoke. I'm not going to deny that, and I'm definitely not going to defend them. I'm just trying to provide a bit of background and explain it's actual purpose.

I think they should have banned the march a long time ago and should just stick to celebrating by the Western Wall as that's the bit they're most excited about.

Edited

My point was they march would be happening regardless. I just mentioned a Venn diagram in my previous post - that's how I see it.

Either way it's gross and shouldn't be happening

Yes but gaining access came via what means? Creating a state and removing the local Indigenous population.

@Humdingerydoo I'm aware the US ambassador to the UN used that term in reference to what the US and Israel were hoping to achieve, but I understand she then said she'd misspoken and meant to say either a "durable solution" or a "final resolution".

What was mistranslated in Netanyahu's speech was actually "total victory", if I remember correctly.

I really don't want to have this conversation again, but surely the fact that the mosque is built on top of the holiest site in Judaism means Jews are indigenous to the area? Like, the Jewish building was there first? Maybe Jews also have some kind of claim to the area?

I'm really not going to discuss this any further. I only came on to this post to clarify what the Jerusalem Day parade is actually about as I felt you were misrepresenting it. It's ok to hate everything about the parade but you shouldn't be misconstruing the actual reason for it.

Ok so no one was actually (purposely!) talking about a final solution? Thanks for clarifying! I bet the US ambassador felt like a right idiot 🙈

Yes thank you@Humdingerydoo like you I feel it should be banned - it is potentially incendiary but a lot of posters upthread seem to have misunderstood and misconstrued its provenance. Does not need to turn into yet another Pro-Palestinian thread really and shouldn't be in the CITME board.

Yes but gaining access came via what means? Creating a state and removing the local Indigenous population.

Speaking of removing local indigenous populations, in 1948, the JEWISH QUARTER of Jerusalem was entirely cleansed of Jews and their homes and buildings were destroyed, with many people being sent to Jordanian prison camps. The commander of the invading Jordanian Legion, Abdullah el-Tal, reported: “For the first time in 1,000 years not a single Jew remains in the Jewish Quarter. Not a single building remains intact. This makes the Jews’ return here impossible.”

This is equally as wrong as what is happening at the moment.

This illustrates the wider policy to rid Israel of their Palestinians so this absolutely relevant. Today Gaza, tomorrow The West Bank and all the while removing people from their homes and repopulating them in Jerusalem.

What - aren't 597 enough?

You know very well that I am not saying that. This post though has not nothing to do with conflict in the middle east.

Scirocco · 05/06/2024 14:40

A march where people chant "Death to the Arabs", call for the 'liberation' of Gaza and the West Bank, and assault journalists (including a Palestinian journalist) seems like it might have something to do with conflict in the Middle East...

That doesn't surprise me.

TakeMe2Insanity · 05/06/2024 14:59

It’s part of one problem. Divide and conquer is clearly a strategy that works on some people. This is totally part of the ME and is incitement so it should totally be included. Attempting to censor what can be included on this board - ridiculous!
