New Hamas video of hostages

The new Hamas video released today of the female hostages selected as the ones they planned to get pregnant was so sickening and I wish I hadn’t seen it.

however, I am also wondering WHY it has not been more widely picked up and broadcast? I don’t understand the silence from the bleeding left; why don’t they see stuff like this and not just feel desperate and sick about those poor poor girls and their families who must be beyond devastated.

Watching the men in those videos helps to counter balance the idea of Israel as the aggressor. I wish more would see it and reflect or even just place those women of equal value to those in Gaza.

How is the world so perverse right now that this warrants a shrug from so many? Or worse, is viewed as justified !?

If you want to talk about Palestinian prisoners, why not do it on a thread about Palestinian prisoners?

Why? It was a valid question? Are you not able to have a balanced view? Clearly not....

@ChickyBricky

From the explanation provided it seems it might be best not to use the word in the future. It should really be enough to just say fascism, I guess! Not sure anyone here would complain too much if you called Ayatollah Khomeini a fascist.

Now if only people would also be careful with using words like "Zionist" properly, that'd be great. People have no problem with that apparently being a "discuss and debate" word, despite protestations from actual Zionists. One rule for us, another rule for everyone else.

One rule for us, another rule for everyone else.

It really is. Misappropriating, redefining or misusing a term with a specific meaning to a certain group is outrageous and indefensible, apart from when it's done to one particular minority.

Yes I have sympathy for them but that's not what this thread is about so...

You should not accuse someone of bullshit terrorist propaganda in a post like this so evidently influenced it.

79Helene · 23/05/2024 13:29

Then a poster came on to say she was against what is happening to Palestinians, but she would describe herself as a Zionist.

Well this may have been me and it's a very common feeling among Jewish people, the two concepts are not incompatible.

Most Jews believe in Israel's right to exist and a Jewish homeland, which is the result of centuries of our persecution. That's it, that's Zionism. It's quite a basic concept so when certain posters on here use derogatory language against Zionists - and others just use it as code for Jew - you must be able to see how utterly offensive that is.

I used to think Zionism meant believing what Netanyahu, Ben-Givr and Smotrich, West Bank settlers and somebody (woman) Weiss believes

Every Jewish person I know despises them, and most Jewish people on here have also noted this.

Those are very different ideas of Zionism. I think people objecting to Zionism are thinking of the first kind. I know I did but I just steer clear of the word now as I don’t know what it means.

It doesn't matter how many times people on this board are told Zionism to us just means Israel's right to exist, some posters will always choose to believe "the first kind".
For example, in one thread there is nothing but links to Instagram posts about Gaza with a very aggressive message along the lines of "Zionists look at this", with every single post, which obviously means us. I am sure you will have seen it. It's disingenuous, offensive, childish and does absolutely nothing but serve to cause further division by someone with no actual skin in the game.

Do you have the same sympathy for the Palestinian hostages that have been imprisoned for 10+ years by Israel...a lot of them children?

This video has only surfaced now that Israel and Netanyahu are losing their support internationally.

This video does not in any way justify the genocide that is going on. People would have more sympathy if 40k+ people (most of whom are children) did not die. And the very argument that they are 'human shields' or whatever nonsense people like to justify their deaths can be applied to the Israeli hostages as well....just collateral between two warring states....

This video has only surfaced now that Israel and Netanyahu are losing their support internationally.
These girls are also innocent victims and I think it’s really sad that your response to the video is to see them as a PR exercise from Netanyahu.

stormy4319trevor · 23/05/2024 14:01

Poor girls, I hope they can be brought home. Does anyone know if they were soldiers? Just wondering if they would be classed as civilian or soldier in hostage release negotiations.

stormy4319trevor · 23/05/2024 14:17

Sorry, I see now they were taken while serving on a military base, so I'm guessing they would come under soldier hostages.

They were soldiers. But look at my earlier post linking a BBC article. What happened to them is absolutely terrible in so many ways.

Yes I'm sure, are you saying I don't?

stormy4319trevor · 23/05/2024 14:25

@ScrollingLeaves Absolutely awful. I think women who serve face a much higher risk of sexual violence than men, if taken prisoner. I pray their families can get them out and they heal. I am afraid the hostages more likely to be released were classed as civilian, and Hamas may hang on to soldiers longer, but that hopefully can be changed.

AdamRyan · 23/05/2024 14:29

ChickyBricky · 23/05/2024 12:45

That wasn't my point; it's more that when politics is nutty enough, it's a circle, not a spectrum - both ends meet.

Again, suits the current right wing nut jobs to say that, doesn't make it true.

"The Left" have no relevance to this. "The Right" in the form of Netanyahu, Smotrich and Ben Gvir do. So it makes me annoyed when posters throw shade on "the left" and imply they are culpable. It's culture wars and these girls deserve better.

Thank you *@79Helene you are right. I could not quite remember your name today without stopping to do a search. Yes, before your patient explanation regarding Zionism, I had presumed it meant the extreme version as espoused by certain people.

I'm cynical as to why this video is coming out now (Israel has a long track record of PR stunts)...unfortunately this war was never about their safety or having them rerurned and that is the sad part. I don't see how releasing this video at this stage (after so much death and destruction) is going to help their situation....as if to say "ohhhh but it's all about the hostages...it always was"...if so Israel should have gone to great lengths to secure their release...they chose to go on the rampage instead. Yes... negotiating with Hamas is a difficult thing after what they did but do they want the hostages back or not?

Yes, it is just awful. Pray that there will be a deal to release them and that somehow they can heal, though how I cannot imagine.

Before their vicious slaughter or capture, over months while at their posts, their warnings of an impending attack were ignored, and then they were left completely vulnerable on Oct 7. Some did not even have weapons I think I remember. ( There were various articles about these ‘spotter’ soldiers in the Israeli press.)

I do believe it was the girls’ families releasing the video in absolute desperation that their government had stopped negotiating with Hamas for their release. They wanted to put pressure on the government.

Mellowdramadrama · 23/05/2024 14:47

@ToughToffee the video was released at the request of the families. They stated their reason for the release

https://www.timesofisrael.com/hostage-families-release-clip-of-female-troops-abduction-to-push-for-their-freedom/

Mellowdramadrama · 23/05/2024 14:48

The video was released ahead of a war cabinet meeting on Wednesday night and was declaredly aimed at pressuring ministers to step up efforts to reach a deal with Hamas to release the hostages. Negotiations on a truce deal have been stalled since April. The only previous deal, in November, saw 105 hostages released during a weeklong truce.
“The disturbing video has been the reality of Agam, Daniella, Liri, Naama, Karina, and 123 other hostages for 229 days,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement. “The video is a damning testament to the nation’s failure to bring home the hostages, who have been forsaken for 229 days.”
“The Israeli government must not waste even one more moment – it must return to the negotiating table today!” it added.

It's my understanding that the video was released by the Hostages Families at this time because they want a negotiated release not a military rescue and IDF is right now expanding their invasion of Rafah [the military option] with an added large portion of embaressing Netanyahu with whom they have poor relations over many months
