Camilla Tominey in the Telegraph today.
The sheer level of hatred in this article horrifies me. Am I wrong to feel so shocked by this?

Me too. I have been shocked by a lot since October 7, but some posters on this thread have hit new lows tonight.

mids2019 · 18/05/2024 19:28

@ChickyBricky

I agree with your analysis. Social media has been a major factor in the respose to this war. We didn't have as much social media in 2001 so didn't see the crowds in Gaza cheering as the planes crashed into the twin towers....but hey let them in.

EasternStandard · 18/05/2024 19:30

Social media is a factor but going by the thinking expressed here I’d say it’s a bad idea

Where will it end

You have to realise that some Palestinians loath the West as much as Israel. Do you think that they will come to Britain, thank us proud profusely, happily sing the national anthem and join our secular liberal society with grinning smiles? This is incredibly disingenuous. Do you think the end of their anger is maybe not voting for Israel in the Eurovision song contest? No quite simply there may be a tangible.security threat.

The answer to my question was yes, it is just start typing stuff and see what comes out day.

So no answer apart from insults then. Helpful.

This is one of the most bizarre posts I have read on these threads. You are literally just making things up. There is no factual basis for anything you have said but, just for fun, plesse point us to the evidence for, say, where Hamas have made it clear that their issue is with Israel, not Jews.

Hamas charter. Which I only read because of the repeated assertion that Hamas wants to "kill all Jews"

https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/hamas-2017-document-full

Hamas affirms that its conflict is with the Zionist project not with the Jews because of their religion. Hamas does not wage a struggle against the Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine. Yet, it is the Zionists who constantly identify Judaism and the Jews with their own colonial project and illegal entity

I'm not a supporter of Hamas. But this repeated assertion that Gazans somehow are complicit in what's happening to them, and are inherently a risk because of their heritage, makes me angry.

I agree. Whoever says "we are full' is a) wrong b) doesn't understand economic viability c) absolutely lacks any human decency.

Lets hope their children never have to suffer this way

They're not wrong.
The number of immigrants is not the issue, it's the locations they are placed in. The number wouldn't be an issue if they were spread fairly around the country.
The majority of immigrants in the last decade or so have been funnelled into urban areas that are already overcrowded and underfunded; areas with not enough housing, GPs, school places, etc.
They're never put in Richmond-upon-Thames or Kensington, they're stuck in Hounslow or Coventry.
People in those areas are also massively displaced.
Ita easy to talk about human decency when you're not the one in a hostel because you can't get a council home, or an GP appointment, or you walk around the area you grew up in and it feels as though you're the incomer, as what has happened there is not integration but displacement. People can be sympathetic, but it's not an infinite well; they are going to be more concerned with their own life and struggles.

ChickyBricky · 18/05/2024 19:13

Didn't you realise that Hamas are a serious entity that negotiates rationally?

Have you looked at any photos of the children living in famine conditions?

Honestly, I think part of the problem is that the West lives through social media, and Hamas have exploited this to their advantage in ways that Israel, more respectful of their dead, have not. Yes, we've had our noses rubbed in the horror of Gazan casualties and deaths, in a way that is not matched by the glimpses of what happened on 7 October and what continues to happen to the hostages taken (e.g. Achilles tendon sliced so they can't run away).

Let me make clear that I am not minimising the horror of what's happened on either side, just that one is much more visible than the other and people are very easily manipulated by imagery.

Let me make clear that I am not minimising the horror of what's happened on either side,

No you are just denying what is happening to Palestinians in Gaza. I am not on twitter or any other social media I pretty much get all my news from msm news channels and I can see clear as day what's happening, but keep telling yourself Hamas are manipulating us if it makes you feel better

Quite. Well said.

headstone · 18/05/2024 20:16

Surely it doesn’t take too much brain power to understand if you create a refugee problem you deal with the problem, and that’s not forcing people to live in tents forever. If you want to have the moral high ground that is. I’m sure the right wing on here who claim to have all the brains can understand this.

In the footage of Hamas fighters on October 7th they used the words ‘Jew’ and ‘Jews’ repeatedly for the people they were searching for to murder ( often accompanied by ‘dog’). Not Israeli. That’s from their own mouths, during their own attack. Rather than a PR charter. . Tells you everything you need to know

Oh dear.

"But our brothers [in the diaspora] are still preparing. They are trying to prepare. They are warming up. A long time has passed with them warming up. All of you 7 million Palestinians abroad, enough of the warming up. You have Jews everywhere and we must attack every Jew on the globe by way of slaughter and killing, if God permits. Enough of the warming up," - Senior Hamas official Fathi Hamad, 2019. That's two years after Hamas changed their charter.

Not sure why anyone would think Hamas genuinely all of a sudden changed their minds about hating Jews 😂 It's still the same people, doing the same thing. They just toned down their charter to win over support from idiots people in the west and it worked. As a general rule, you probably shouldn't trust terrorists.

Dulra · 18/05/2024 20:19

This thread has confirmed that the majority of posters supporting Israel have nothing but hate towards Palestinians, that all you can see them as are terrorist supporting psychopaths. You do not see them as innocent civilians but a threat to you all even the children I guess. They are people that do not deserve to feel safe, do not deserve to be safe and do not deserve asylum at a time of crisis. The way you have also turned on posters and ganged up on them is just so toxic.
I have reported this thread and I really hope Mumsnet delete it. It's a cesspit of intolerance and hatred.

I know. It’s hard to fathom the psychology of people, who even after October 7th, want to believe Hamas are not all that bad really, and actually have some redeeming qualities.
Yet such people walk among us.
It’s disturbing really. People can convince themselves of anything, against all evidence, if they motivated enough.

It's really quite something to witness the same people who have spent months talking over, belittling and giving their opinions about Jews (not just Israelis, but Jews), now complaining about racism.

I'm not interested in taking sides. The Israeli government and the IDF have also said and done awful, dehumanising things about the Palestinians.

Since Netanyahu announced his entirely impossible goal of "eliminating Hamas" I've been deeply worried about the number of Gazans who will die unnecessarily as a result. Pretty much everything I was worried about has and is happening.

The majority of Gazans are displaced. Hundreds of thousands are starving and we know children and babies are most likely to die in famine. This is entirely man made and there is no end in sight. It's shocking in the 21st Century.

I don't think any amount of barbarity from Hamas justifies what's happening in Gaza.

You said many things change in 50 years in response to PP, so it sounded like you knew what it used to be like in the 70s.

I think it isn't beyond belief to think things would have changed in 50 years.
I do know from my father in law that racism was rife if you were black. The sign "No blacks, no Irish and no dogs" isn't a myth.
