Camilla Tominey in the Telegraph today.
The sheer level of hatred in this article horrifies me. Am I wrong to feel so shocked by this?

Its grotesque gaslighting. Nobody can be this stupid, surely.

As a general observation, to the extent that the corpse of the idea that clever people are left wing is still twitching, there is a certain type of munsnetter who is doing her best to administer the coup de grace.
and she is well represented on this thread.

It’s really not funny now, actually. The denial and minimisation is pretty offensive.

It is. Maybe they’re as pp suggested

As someone firmly on the left myself, this issue more than any other made me realise that lefties are no smarter than anyone else, and certainly no less antisemitic.

NecessaryNC24 · 18/05/2024 19:09

Well we learned that from Corbyn.

Marjoriefrobisher · 18/05/2024 19:10

Indeed.

SharonEllis · 18/05/2024 19:12

NecessaryNC24 · 18/05/2024 19:09

Well we learned that from Corbyn.

For sure but he was just a symptom of a widespread problem. I think what it reflects is how very deepseated antisemitism is in society, rather than anything peculiar to the left, though of course left antisemitism has its own particular, specific aspects.

Nicely written. Enough amusement after that ridiculous post

I know, right? Next level gaslighting.

Didn't you realise that Hamas are a serious entity that negotiates rationally?

Have you looked at any photos of the children living in famine conditions?

Honestly, I think part of the problem is that the West lives through social media, and Hamas have exploited this to their advantage in ways that Israel, more respectful of their dead, have not. Yes, we've had our noses rubbed in the horror of Gazan casualties and deaths, in a way that is not matched by the glimpses of what happened on 7 October and what continues to happen to the hostages taken (e.g. Achilles tendon sliced so they can't run away).

Let me make clear that I am not minimising the horror of what's happened on either side, just that one is much more visible than the other and people are very easily manipulated by imagery.

stormy4319trevor · 18/05/2024 19:14

Majority of academics lean left, so clearly the ideas resonate with more intelligent people. Non academics, of course, scoff at this because they are not very clever at connecting the dots.

Assume you're joking. I mean anyone who hangs out with academics as much as I do is laughing heartily.

Humdingerydoo · 18/05/2024 19:16

ChickyBricky · 18/05/2024 18:56

@AdamRyan
Hamas have been clear their issue is with Israel and not with Jewish people.

Are you kidding?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!??!?

I know right? 🙈 I was going to say something but thought that must surely be a joke

I don’t think you can draw much from how academics ‘lean’

Im sorry to disillusion you, but twitter killed the notion that left wing academics are invariably intelligent quite a while ago. Do try and keep up.

stormy4319trevor · 18/05/2024 19:18

@SharonEllis I don't think so.

stormy4319trevor · 18/05/2024 19:19

I see my point about non-academics has been proved. Thank you and good night.

It’s just the standard issue emotional blackmail these people always try because they think everyone is as vapid as they are.

@Humdingerydoo But I saw your post a while back, and thought it was compassionate, balanced and thoughtful, and probably the thoughts of an intelligent person. So, good night.

um, firstly what data do you have to support the underlying assumption in your post that academics are more intelligent than other professionals?

Secondly, academia has formed and supported the utterly irrational and batshit idea that is queer theory/ gender ideology.

Peoole who are good at passing exams and writing articles are perfectly capable of believing stupid things, following the crowd, buying into simplistic goodie and baddie narratives and refusing to read or consider views the think they disagree with. Many Left wing academics have excelled in this recently.

Marjoriefrobisher · 18/05/2024 19:23

SharonEllis · 18/05/2024 19:22

'Proof' 🤣

Proof is an elastic concept you know. If you were as intelligent as an academic you’d know that.

I've certainly learnt a lot this evening. I'll give them that.
