Camilla Tominey in the Telegraph today.
The sheer level of hatred in this article horrifies me. Am I wrong to feel so shocked by this?

Leave it in all its epic batshittery.

The existence of Israel is indeed antithetical to the Neturei Karta, fringe extremist cult, so I guess TRUE Jewish Rabbi Yisrael David Weiss's perfect explanation deserves an outing at least once in a while, although recommending his views as a starting point on anti-Zionism might be taking it a little bit too far.

I think I'm just in a bit of shock after being called both an Islamophobe and antisemite all in one post, and also told I'm apparently not a real Jew? So much offense in such a short period of time!

AhNowTed · 19/05/2024 18:20

@Humdingerydoo

I have no idea about different denominations of Judaism, so I won't comment on that, and I agree the poster got pretty het up.

But I don't like the way other posters have conducted themselves either.

Carping for the sake of it. Nitpicking while ignoring the substance of the post. Just to score points.

There's certainly a lot to unpack there. Can't decide on a specific baiting tactic? Save time and go for all of them at once!

So you don't have any knowledge or understanding of how extremely offensive that poster is being but think it's ok to lecture Jewish posters on how they respond to it?

That kind of posting is too far from reasonable

That’s why it gets deleted

Tbf the poster employed the same intimidating and insulting tactics as some other people on this thread. I doubt the ones in question can see the irony in it though.

OK, so that person was explicitly and horrendously antisemitic and got called out on it. But that's "carping" and "nit picking" in your book. Got it. That says more about you than it does about us.

Again, if you have no knowledge or understanding of why those posts were so offensive and received the response they did, maybe just sit this one out.

AhNowTed · 19/05/2024 18:30

@25milesfromhome

"So you don't have any knowledge or understanding of how extremely offensive that poster is being but think it's ok to lecture Jewish posters on how they respond to it?"

You see, your post is an example of what I am talking about.

I admit I know little about Jewish denominations.

How does that translate into "I think it's OK to lecture" other Jews.

I never said or implied that.

No they didn’t

It was too far removed and unrelated to the posts they were answering.

SharonEllis · 19/05/2024 18:33

I feel best to leave it, though I'm sorry that you had to go through it. I've lost count of the times that I've seen non-Jews hold up naturei karta as 'true jews' to justify their own 'anti-zionism' . Perhaps this might help to show how they don't represent mainstream Jewish opinion & just how offensive they are to other Jews? I'm not Jewish so its obviously not my call.

@AhNowTed they are quoting a member of a cult ostracised by Jews on 3 continents, denounced as extremists by Jews way way more ultra orthodox than me as their source.
And the group in question would absolutely not be using the internet and the poster appeared to post on Shabbat, beyond unthinkable for an ultra Orthodox Jew.

there have been comments on here that have been awful, although I came late to the thread , I can see references to comments that were deleted that were dreadful, and I am very glad they were reported and deleted. But this isn’t about denominations of Jewry and differences of opinions, it’s about claiming to be Jewish while aggressively attacking Jewish posters

Sorry, not lecturing, just don't like the way we're conducting ourselves with our carping, nitpicking and point scoring and thus, admonishing us accordingly. Got it.

AhNowTed · 19/05/2024 18:37

@Hélène79

"OK, so that person was explicitly and horrendously antisemitic and got called out on it. But that's "carping" and "nit picking" in your book. Got it. That says more about you than it does about us."

That is not what I was referring to or meant.

This has been a long thread.

I am referring to a current of what I consider to be disingenuous posts long before that particular poster came along.

Coshei · 19/05/2024 18:34

They deserved to be called out and / or deleted

Agreeing to child refugees will most likely just trigger a rush of 20- and 30-something men claiming to be 17. Come on, we've all seen how this kind of thing plays out.

So no to all children then, because a few older people could potentially slip in?

Actually I remember reading an article which talked about how many children were being classed as adults because assessments of their age were being carried out by people who aren’t medically trained to do so, and that an effective assessment process hasn’t taken place.

As a hypothetical solution, how about setting a lower age limit?

Humdingerydoo · 19/05/2024 18:39

To be clear, the poster was telling other Jews they're not real Jews. That's not only incredibly insulting but I think we can all agree that it's also antisemitic. It's a bit like someone Greek Orthodox telling a Protestant they're not a real Christian. It's completely unacceptable.

I compared them to other posters, who have posted in a similar aggressive, derogatory and condescending fashion.

I remember seeing something in the news recently about Biden talking about taking in Palestinian refugees - did anyone else? Did anything happen with that?

It was deletion worthy

unfortunately I find Biden very wishy washy. He seems to say whatever he thinks voters want to hear and then either forgets about it or it just goes quiet.

EasternStandard · 19/05/2024 18:56

The last thing I recall on Biden is a statement a deal was imminent but then it didn’t happen

Jeremy Bowen did a very good piece the other day on the state of things

I was not referring to that poster, at all. Or the responses to their posts. I know nothing about the subject.

To be absolutely clear.

I was referring to this now long thread, and am just a bit fed up generally of posters waiting for a gotcha moment.

There's nothing to be gained by that, for anyone.
