Camilla Tominey in the Telegraph today.
The sheer level of hatred in this article horrifies me. Am I wrong to feel so shocked by this?

I really have had my eyes opened by the level of racism on this thread.
It's vile, disgusting, wrong and sickening.
May you never find yourself and your loved ones in a position of needing refuge.

OK. I have no desire to get into a huge fight over this. I'll leave you all to it.

Nobody wants a fight but please, go away and reflect on the conversations you have had & try listening and reading a bit more deeply.

I got as far as the first sentence but then the tears of laughter blinded me, sorry

Vile and disgusting post.

The poll showing massive support for Hamas in Gaza is very concerning. But I do remember that in Catholic areas of Belfast, during the height of the troubles, the IRA would have probably had a similar level of support ( and I imagine the equivalent support for UDF in Protestant areas) When people are afraid their views become more radical and dangerous and terrorists start to be seen as “freedom fighters “ even when they are clearly barbaric thugs.

Maybe this is too simplistic but it seems to me that It is in Hamas interests to keep Gazans terrified and angry at Israel as support for Hamas is dependent on hatred for Israel. Unfortunately Netanyahu has helped to increase that hatred.

I think it isn't beyond belief to think things would have changed in 50 years.
I do know from my father in law that racism was rife if you were black. The sign "No blacks, no Irish and no dogs" isn't a myth.

Okay, so you do know that racism was quite common in the UK 50 years ago.
You also say that it “isn't beyond belief to think things would have changed in 50 years”.
So do you think they’ve changed for the better or worse since the times when there were signs “No blacks, no Irish and no dogs”?
Because when PP stated that the UK was happy to accept Vietnamese refugees in the 70s, your response was that many things change in 50 years.
Do you think they changed for the worse?

You are being amazingly tolerant. If someone spreads misinformation about violent terrorists and their intent they deserve to have their arse handed to them.
I note they haven’t had the decency to apologise either.

How would this work in practice? Do you think we let Palestinian children into schools to learn from British curriculum which includes empire, colonisation and our role in it? Do we expect Palestinians to naturally take to British values where Judaism is protected and there is a rule of law different to that of their home country?

Palestinians aren't going to simply 'fit in' after having undergone immense trauma and deal with huge mental health problems due to PTSD by living in a country which is a natural ally of Israel. It could and probably will end badly.

I have no idea what’s actually written in that article, but the title and headline make me think that the author had no concern about how many bad feelings this would stir up when she wrote it.

And that if she truly wanted people to listen to her ideas, rather than simply stir up existing bad feelings, she would have been more careful with the language that she used.

There is significant support for Hamas in Gaza and their 'operation' on October 7 th so why should we risk an influx of migrants from such a region? There have been a number of historical Islamist terrorists in this country and elsewhere partially or wholly motivated by the Palestinian situation. Can people not see how Paletinian people may be pre radicalized? If we look at the scenes from Gaza how do people think it infeasible these people would want the most basic of human wants, that of revenge? Revenge against Jews and revenge against a country that has supported Israel since 1948.

Palestinians are no allies of the UK in the way Ukranians are. Again the hatred personified by Hamas coukd easily be spread elsewhere . Neighbouring Arab countries are wary of refugees because they are quite aware of the threats of terrorism .

Palestinians are no allies of the UK in the way Ukranians are.

Being an ally of the UK is not a prerequisite for offering asylum to people fleeing conflict FFS

I'm not interested in taking sides. The Israeli government and the IDF have also said and done awful, dehumanising things about the Palestinians.

Since Netanyahu announced his entirely impossible goal of "eliminating Hamas" I've been deeply worried about the number of Gazans who will die unnecessarily as a result. Pretty much everything I was worried about has and is happening.

The majority of Gazans are displaced. Hundreds of thousands are starving and we know children and babies are most likely to die in famine. This is entirely man made and there is no end in sight. It's shocking in the 21st Century.

I don't think any amount of barbarity from Hamas justifies what's happening in Gaza.

So true.
The Israelis are not attacking Hamas effectively. There is increasing criticism of the way they're fighting this war from Israelis. Bombing the top doesn't damage these tunnels but just causes collateral damage - the poor Palestinians. So the Hamas fighters are increasingly able to regroup.
Are the Idf going to repeatedly re-fight in the same areas they cleared a few weeks ago? They need a whole new way to attack Hamas within the tunnels. That's the only way the war in Vietnam was won via learning a whole new way of combat.

Most Israelis/Idf fighters seem to have a deep-rooted hatred of Palestinians. There's no compassion or care for them at all. They're not treated like human beings, but they're akin to Cockroaches. This is far more apparent than the Palestinians so-called hatred of the Zionists. I've read that the support for Hamas before the 7th was low within the educated Palestinian sector. I'm sure support has now rocketed because they're the only ones fighting against this immensely cruel, totally unfair attack on the Palestinians.

@Marjoriefrobisher

"tears of laughter" at the Israeli government rhetoric about the Palestinians. Really?

Let's look at how Israeli government, ministers and officials talk openly about the Palestinians, and then decide how hilarious it is.

Ariel Kallner, a Knesset member for Likud, said, "Right now, one goal: Nakba. A Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of 1948"

IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari, who said forces would turn Gaza into a "city of tents" and that Israel's "emphasis is on damage and not on accuracy" in the bombardment of Gaza.

Amichay Eliyahu, a cabinet minister, and Tally Gotliv, a Likud parliament member, have both called for Israel to use nuclear weapons on Gaza, with Gotliv stating: "It's time for a doomsday weapon. Not flattening a neighborhood. Crushing and flattening Gaza."

Galit Distel-Atbaryan, Knesset member for Likud posted on X that Israelis should focus on "Erasing all of Gaza from the face of the earth" and forcing the Gazans either into Egypt or to the death. It was such statements that led to Raz Segal's (Israeli historian and professor) characterization of Israel's conduct in the 2023 war in Gaza as a "textbook case of genocide", stating to Vox - “If this is not special intent to destroy, I don't know what is."

On 14 November 2023, Israel's finance minister Bezalel Smotrich stated that he welcomed "the initiative of the voluntary emigration of Gaza Arabs to countries around the world," adding that "the State of Israel will no longer be able to accept the existence of an independent entity in Gaza."

In November 2023, Israel's former justice minister, Ayelet Shaked, spoke of transforming Khan Younis into a soccer field with 'the assistance of God and the IDF'. Shaked said Israel should 'take advantage of the destruction that we will wreak upon them' in Gaza and pressure countries worldwide into accepting quotas of Gazan refugees, ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 per country.

On 22 November 2023, Otzma Yehudit MK Limor Son Har-Melech, said in a conference that "there is no escape from returning and fully controlling the Gaza Strip, full control that will include extensive and flourishing settlement in the entire strip. Not like the Gush Katif settlements that were concentrated in a few isolated areas, but settlement for the entire length and width of the strip."

In December 2023, David Azoulay, the head of the local council of the town of Metula, speaking to Israel's 103FM radio said the people of Gaza should be ordered to "go to the beaches" where the Israeli army would "load them up" on ships and "place them on Lebanon's shores where there are enough refugee camps", that "the entire Gaza Strip should be emptied and levelled flat, just like in Auschwitz. Let it become a museum, showcasing the capabilities of the State of Israel and dissuading anyone from living in the Gaza Strip" and that "we should leave Gaza desolate and destroyed to serve as a museum, demonstrating the madness of the people who lived there". His statements were condemned by the Auschwitz Museum.

On 9 April 2024, Israel minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich stated that Israel had "returned Khan Yunis to the stone age".

Hilarious isn't it.

Honestly, have you no idea about programme refugees and how it works. Why are Palestinians any different to Ukrainian, Syrian, Iraqis, afghans, Sudanese, Bosnians and so on who had to flee conflict and claim temporary asylum in a safe country.

How is this any different to any other refugee that has been granted asylum here?

Coshei · 18/05/2024 20:57

Amazing. A thread discussing the arbitrary nature of allowing and accepting refugees from different locations gets derailed and posts reminding others of the thread purpose get deleted. MNHQ you should be ashamed of yourselves sometimes. Why don’t you delete the whole thread instead?

The Israelis hate the palestinians
the Palestinians don’t hate Israelis, or at least didn’t until they got unreasonably upset about the mass rape and murder that happened in October which totally wasn’t anything to do with Palestinians hating Israelis at all, honest
The remarkable thing about you people is you actually believe this stuff, don’t you? You genuinely believe it.

Bigredpants · 18/05/2024 20:59

She’s not wrong. If a UK person in their 20s with a degree and years of working can’t afford a studio flat how are we going to justify taking in thousands from a population where it’s usual to have 5-6 children before 30? Our housing is scarce and small. Our young people first.
WE HAVEN’T MANAGED TO HOUSE THE AFGHANS YET.

What the actual fuck? Where is your proof that most Israelis have a deep-rooted hatred of Palestinians? And have no compassion?! And "so-called hatred of the Zionists"?! It's not "so-called". It's even in the fucking updated Hamas charter! The original charter was also very clear on their stance on Israelis, Zionists and Jews. The original charter that got Hamas elected. They got something like 45% of the vote at the time.
