Hamas refusing ceasefire??????

mids2019 · 27/02/2024 13:31

So President Biden is under the impression that a ceasefire could be in place by the weekend ....

Queue celebration (presumably) by all those that march on the streets calling for a ceasefire.

Then we find our Hamas have problems with it!!!!! The same Hamas that are supposed to be acting in their people's intsrests

We now know who really does not want to engage in ceasefire talks and release hostages. We now know who the ire of all those marchers in London should be directed against.

I feel Hamas want this war to continue as is as they are thriving on the sympathy the war is bringing to Palestinians. The more global 'support' is demonstrated the more they feel they have a chance of being part of a post war peace

Which news site say this? I've checked BBC and Sky and they don't say this.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/02/2024 14:54

I can't either.

Link?

From your own article linked...

but as well as the words from Hamas, a senior Israeli official has also said that he does not understand where Biden’s optimism is coming from.

So yeah, not just Hamas after all 🤔

Fussandmisery · 27/02/2024 15:07

“A Hamas official has told Reuters that US president Joe Biden’s words about a halt to fighting in Gaza are premature, and do not match the situation on the ground.* *
Biden had seemed confident that a truce would be agreed by Monday, but as well as the words from Hamas, a senior Israeli official also said that he does not understand where Biden’s optimism is coming from.
Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson said the country remains “upbeat and optimistic” about the prospects for a deal

It looks like both Hamas and Israel think Biden is jumping the gun.

mids2019 · 27/02/2024 15:13

I just thought Hamas would be jumping up and down for a ceasefire. What do Hamas want that is preventing a ceasefire?

There was a long piece in this on the Today programme this morning. Hamas don't want it because it is only for 40 days and doesn't allow anyone to go back to Gaza City or Khan Younis. Israel don't want it because the hardliners in the coalition don't want it.

mids2019 · 27/02/2024 15:15

@onemoremile

surely 40 days is better than nothing? Aid could get in.......

onemoremile · 27/02/2024 15:18

Well I think so, but I'm not a leader of Hamas. I was just saying what was reported on the Today programme which is clear, even if I disagree with it.

mids2019 · 27/02/2024 15:27

OK so Hamas and Israel have failed to agree a ceasefire. If Hamas are holding out for better terms does this belie the genocide rhetoric that seems to be doing the rounds?

As far as I can see talks will still be ongoing to reach a deal.
Although until its concrete I'm personally wary to be too optimistic

Why are you focusing on Hamas when it seems the Israeli government don't want it either? I rather think the Israeli government are the only ones who hold the power to create this ceasefire and allow aid in. Unfortunately they don't actually want that.

Partyatnumberten · 27/02/2024 15:49

Is this an ironic post, or are you genuinely surprised that a terrorist group doesn't want to stop fighting and don't act in the best interests of the people?

@Partyatnumberten

Unfortunately I am not surprised but I think people need to face up to the fact Hamas are part of the problem and calls for a ceasefire if you think one is viable need to be targeted at Hamas as well as Israel. It always takes two to fight

I think I heard on the BBC at lunchtime that Hamas doesn't want a ceasefire but an ending of the war. No mention is made of the 130 Israeli hostages they hold.

Indeed, So people can be fed, watered and medically treated then they can be bombed to smithereens 40 days later. At least, they can die sated.

I also listened to it and the hostages were mentioned.

No it doesn’t. Because a temporary ceasefire would simply be a pause in the genocide. Israel have made it crystal clear that they aren’t done with the slaughter yet. Their Government are repeatedly stating that there are no plans for a permanent ceasefire, they still want to go ahead with a ground invasion of Rafah. Oh and let’s not forget what’s happening in the West Bank…..

This.

Regardless, nothing Hamas does gives Israel a free pass to slaughter and maim thousands and thousands of innocent children.

blackcherryconserve · 27/02/2024 16:34

Auvergne63 I meant that no mention was made by Hamas of all the hostages only that a certain number might be released.

ConnieCounter · 27/02/2024 18:51

OP trying so hard to blame Hamas for this. I really don't understand why some posters refuse to believe that Israel are the ones who want to keep the slaughter going. I mean, they've said it out loud, they've rejected ceasefires. What would convince you?

A forty day humanitarian pause isn’t a ceasefire. That’s probably why it’s not an option for Hamas as their red line is a ceasefire.

Limesodaagain · 27/02/2024 18:58

Are you saying that Hamas is blocking the idea of a forty day humanitarian pause?

All hostages returned and consequences for leaders and participants in the 7th of October atrocities. If Israel did not accept a ceasefire after that, then I would be convinced.

Limesodaagain · 27/02/2024 18:58

I am. Hamas have said they won’t settle for less than a ceasefire.
Israel won’t settle for anything that leaves Hamas alive and in power, so a ceasefire is not acceptable to Israel.

A forty day humanitarian pause with a promise it could lead to a ceasefire- Hamas and Israel both know it won’t lead to a ceasefire. It will only prolong the inevitable.
