Greatest rise in anti-Muslim hate in UK since Hamas's attack on 7 October

Incidents included verbal threats, online abuse and in one instance, a Muslim family had the word "Hamas" written on their front door, a UK-based organisation has said.

It’s not really a surprise. The aggressive weekly protests don’t help. The hatred my Jewish neighbours are experiencing is vile.

BoohooWoohoo · 22/02/2024 19:35

Considering the UK government’s stance and reporting of pro-Gaza gatherings, this does not surprise me in the slightest.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 22/02/2024 19:37

It's not really surprising as this happens after every terrorist attack especially 9-11

Can you explain to me why do the weekly protests don’t help?

There's also a huge rise in antisemitic abuse globally since the Hamas attacks.

Yes there is a thread for that topic already so please leave this one for anti Muslim hate

Ooh thread police? Surely it’s ok to consider context.

Scirocco · 22/02/2024 19:52

Thank you for starting this.

It is a significant problem, exacerbated I think by some of the language used by political figures and the media in relation to the conflict.

Avoiding derailment which is against mn talk guidelines.

No worries. Im not Muslim myself but I do recognise how this all is affecting this community and they’re many times forgotten

I agree @Scirocco that the media exacerbates this, particularly outlets like GB News, DM and the Sun. Political figures - yes, although it's not new. I'm remembering Johnson's comments before he became PM. I am so sorry Muslims have to deal with this.

Throwawayme · 22/02/2024 20:08

Its not detailing the thread at all to point out the increase in attacks on both sides. These marches promote antisemitism. That's why they don't help. People marching with "from the river to the sea" on their banners. Maybe many of them don't know what it means, but Jewish people do.

As a Muslim, it's not clear to me that society thinks anti-Muslim hate is unacceptable. On the contrary, we experience a great deal of hostility and aggression which is denied, minimised and justified.

Consider for a moment how you might feel, as part of a minority experiencing considerable hostility and discrimination, to have a thread started acknowledging that people like you are experiencing hate crimes and abuse, and then within the first ten posts to be told it's not surprising, other people are experiencing issues too, it's got to be considered in context, etc.... How would that make you feel? Welcome? Accepted? Equal?

stormy4319trevor · 22/02/2024 20:10

@OppsUpsSide I don't know what you are talking about, but it sounds offensive.

I think the point being made was that there is already a thread (several) focusing on anti-semitic hate but no equivalent space to discuss the distressing experiences of Muslims.

Are you saying the marches are responsible for increasing attacks on Muslims?

JanewaysBun · 22/02/2024 20:14

(For context i am not muslim) I think many, many British people look for the tiniest excuse to have a pop at muslims. I follow a local newspaper FB page and whatever they report, the comments section will blame it on muslims, including things like the green belt being built on Confused. Since 2001 the racists have seen them as an easy target imo.

@stormy4319trevor you ‘don’t know what I’m talking about’ but it ‘sounds’ offensive?
The threat of Islamist intimidation has been a topic of conversation in the Houses of Parliament today.

stormy4319trevor · 22/02/2024 20:20

@OppsUpsSide This is a thread about attacks on Muslims, so I don't know why you are mentioning Islamism. I think you have been listening to too much Hartley Brewer.

Scirocco · 22/02/2024 20:22

Oh! @JanewaysBun I didn't know the greenbelt was us too - I must have missed the memo!

Yeah, I've found that too with local and national media. The language used, the level of sensitivity... it's all quite different depending on race, faith and culture.

How is it Muslims fault ? 🤔

OP posts:
OppsUpsSide · 22/02/2024 20:23

Islamists do come under the Muslim umbrella, and their rhetoric does fuel suspicion and fear that ends up negatively impacting other Muslims, so I disagree with you, I think it is relevant.
